Facing the music

Chapter 7 – Facing the music

---

It was three in the morning when the dark blue sedan was spotted entering the apartment compound as the black gate closed behind it. It was a cool morning, a rather calming one, he noted as he exited his rented vehicle. No soul was around as the sounds of cricket accompanied him to the main lobby and up to his apartment on the seventh floor.

His whole body was still shaking; he realized when he had to fumble with the keys in his hands before trying to pushing it into the keyhole. Cursing, he finally got the job done as he entered the apartment, switching on the lights on the way to the living room.

The rented condominium looked luxurious; of course it would be if he was paying eight thousands US dollars a month. The security around the block was tight and with his added technical equipment here and there, this area was almost impossible to break in if one didn’t have the proper knowledge to do so.

It was a breeze to live here. Everything was provided for 24/7 and thus he and his agents wouldn’t need to drive out at two in the morning to a convenience store just to get carton of milk. Plus, it situated approximately 12 blocks away from the main headquarter, SIBD [Seoul International Bureau Department].

Living here was definitely different, that he knew but he get used to it [the language, the food, the people] after a few weeks of mental adjustment on his part. Of course, it would be nice if he was here on vacation instead of a mission on trying to gather as much information as he could get from a known enemy. It became a headache every single time Yoochun called him just to get the latest news on Hazeid’s new base right here in Seoul. Aside from the fact that the enemy was agile and pretty much as smart as his team, the case was moving slower than they first predicted.

Furuya Keita’s phone call that brought a flush of red on his cheeks every single time he thought, just because it unsettled him in many ways. One of it was the very fact that the enemy had known that he was right here, right at this very country. Of course, he wouldn’t think much lesser from the kind of standard that Hazeid had put themselves on. And yes, aside from that, there was of course the main point which brought a huge ache on his lower part at the thought of the criminal successfully being able to make him hard through a simple phone sex.

Apparently he didn’t know his body as much as Keita did.

His thoughts of sarcasm stopped as his phone vibrated. Park Yoochun’s number flashed on the screen, the green light blinking as he flipped it open. “Shim speaking.” He muttered.

“I heard something that I am not fond of today and it’s not from you.” Yoochun drawled slowly and Changmin couldn’t help but shuddered at the cold tone of the other. It was his fault but trying to resolve the aftereffects of a failed mission was a lot harder than it looked, especially when he was the one in charge this time of cleaning up the mess. “I don’t like the idea of being the last to know Shim, you of all people should know that.” A soft sigh could be heard from the other side of the line and Changmin could imagine the older man rubbing his forehead, trying effortlessly to try to catch up on what was happening at the other side of the world.

“I didn’t think that we could make such a huge mistake. Our main purpose is to plant bugs around a garage which could be a candidate to their new base. We decide that we should be there first before the enemy could have the chance to evaluate the space. But it turned out that the enemy knows just what we are thinking. And that’s when we clashed.” Changmin opened his briefcase as he took out a few files. Putting it on the table, he then keyed in the password to his laptop, all the while holding the phone that was connecting him to Yoochun.

“How many casualties are there?”

“One. Their number matches ours coincidently; it’s like they knew we are coming. I think they had it all planned out and we fell right into their trap.” Changmin thought back about how foolish it was to lead his team to danger. How close it was for him to lose someone from his team. “An officer, from the blue team, coded 1453 was hospitalized.”

“Have you contacted his family?” Yoochun asked.

“Yes. I don’t think he is fit enough to continue working for the team, at least not for another month or so.”

“Get him transferred back to US. I’ll send someone new over.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t like how this is going, Min.” Yoochun spoke in such finality that Changmin’s stomach lurched. “I can’t keep losing my best men just because my subordinates, in-charge of making the best decision out of a situation, had a knack of making the wrong ones. I didn’t think you would be so careless as to walk right into their trap. They know you as much as you know them. Tonight mission should have never happen if not on your cue, at least that’s what I’ve gathered from the report that you send me. What’s wrong? I knew you Min; you wouldn’t risk your team like that. It’s because of him, isn’t it? What did Keita do to you?” The soft question in his voice made Changmin jerked a little bit as his vision clouded.

“We thought we have a better chance of securing the parameter but something felt wrong, I mean-” Changmin sighed as he realized the reason to why he still ordered for the mission to proceed. “I didn’t think that he would hurt me, even for a second-”

“He wouldn’t hurt you.” Yoochun interrupted. “But he would not hesitate to kill my team without battling an eyelid. And that shows you are not being a good team leader. The position of a leader is important, Min. There’s no leader if there’s no members and there’s team if the members lose faith in their leader.”

“I know but something in me-”

“We do not make decisions based on emotions. Ever. We based them on facts, evidences, clues, hypotheses but never feelings. Feelings are an illusion of a fact; they are as accurate as trying to predict the future.” Yoochun replied firmly. “We don’t have that kind of luxury Min. Every single mistake that we make could result in someone else’s blood on our hands. You need to realize the importance of this situation.

Fear struggled up Changmin’s throat. “I don’t want anyone to die.”

“Me too, Min, me too. That’s why I need you to be more focused, more agile. We can’t afford to slip up, not when we are this close.” Yoochun’s voice crackled over the mouthpiece. “One more mistake Min and you would be finding yourself covering Jaejoong’s undercover job while he covered your ass there. I’m going give you a week to straighten everything out, just a week Min so make good use of that. I don’t want to force you to do something that you don’t want to.”

“Yoochun-”

“Yes?”

“What if I tell you that there’s a mole in our team, would you believe me?”

“I don’t need to hear any rumors, Min. This is a serious accusation, even for someone of your position.”

“The only reason why we target the garage in the first place is because of the information that he had given.”

“Who is he?”

“Kim Jaejoong.”

Silence. “You do know the seriousness of this topic that you are saying, don’t you? This is strike three for Kim if it’s true.”

“He gives us the address to the garage, saying that it’s based on the information that Yunho had given him.”

On the other side of the line, Park Yoochun sighed, frustrated that the case could go this slow. “We still don’t know where Kim Junsu could place his new base on. Office Kim is not making it any easier for me to put trust in him. I guess I’ll meet you a bit later than scheduled. A trip back to US is needed.” Yoochun replied before ending the conversation abruptly.

Changmin sighed; it was so like Yoochun to suddenly click the red button, leaving him to hear the monotone. With a sigh, he too clicked the red button before putting his phone beside his laptop.

He didn’t want to suspect Jaejoong because he had nothing against the other man. But it was the third time Kim had led the team to a trap, nearly killing a life. He needed to be sure that Jaejoong was on their side. The situation couldn’t be as more real as this.

After all, it was his mistake to let Keita go at that old warehouse, wrong to think that the other man would never hurt him.

Deputy Commissioner of the US Army, Park Yoochun, liked to know everything that was going on in his department. It wasn’t the control he wanted but rather, he just didn’t want to be kept in the dark. After all, the consequences of every action that his department had make rested comfortably on his shoulders.

And the most important thing that kept him awake at night was Kim Junsu. He didn’t know where the other man was, it was as though the other man had disappeared after that fateful night. But that itself doesn’t make any sense, not when Hazied was making such a big move this time.

That was why deep inside his gut, he knew something was terribly wrong, that Junsu was planning something bigger, something nastier that he could ever imagine. And it wasn’t helping that everything he was planning so far wasn’t going the way he wanted it to.

The case was getting to him hard and fast that it left him scrambling for air. His laptop in front of him was flashing nothing but an empty black screen as he stared aimlessly into it. Unconsciously, his fingers ghosted over the keys of the laptop, imagining that it was something else.

He missed playing the piano, that one thing that kept him through the horrible days. He wanted everything that he needed right back, everything that should have been to be back to where it was supposed to be.

But the only thing that was surrounding his life right now was someone that’s sending him to damnation. That’s when he swore to never look back; to take a step forward, to move to new beginnings and catching Kim Junsu meant the start of a new life he struggled to fulfill.

Even if he had to pay with his own life.

A few thousand miles away from the luxurious apartment that Shim Changmin was residing, Kim Jaejoong awoke with a groan. He opened his eyes; his hand instinctively rose up into the air to block the sun rays. Sitting up with the support of his arms, he felt something sticky around his thighs.

Cocktail. Yunho. Table. Fuck.

Eyes widened upon realization. Turning to his life, he saw the handsome face of the man he was supposed to be spying on. Something dreadful blocked his throat as he hastily untangled himself from the bedsheet. Picking up the clothes on the floor of the hotel room, yesterday night’s events flooded his mind.

He was wasted with so much lust that they both rode through the night.

In a record breaking of a minute, he was walking straight to the door and out the room. Without looking over his shoulder to ensure that no one was following him, he quickly pressed the button just as the door to the lift slide opened. Entering the rectangle space, his eyes widened upon seeing the walls of the lift being covered with mirrors.

He was a mess, he thought as he looked at his teary-glazed eyes. He looked like a man who had just been satisfied sexually. His hair was crumpled, too messy for anyone to be thinking that he was indeed a policeman undercover. He rubbed his swollen lips as thought trying to erase the memories of how rough the kisses were. The hickeys on his neck proved to be another problem that he was forced to hide if he didn’t want anyone in his team to know what had happened last night.

He couldn’t let the others know.

He might as well go to hell if anyone finds out that he had just slept with the enemy.

“So I heard you have quite a night.”

Jaejoong froze upon hearing the other man’s voice. It was too sudden, too soon to be facing Park Yoochun when he was still vulnerable and reeling from the shock of what he had done.

“What do you want?” Jaejoong asked as he decided to play it cool.

“Are you supposed to be talking to your supervisor that way Officer Kim or is it just your way to say hello?” Yoochun raise his eyebrows as he took a scrutinizing look at his agent, noticing how badly the other man was limping.

“I had a rough time yesterday.” Jaejoong grumbled as he sat down on the couch, ignoring the other man’s deep glare as he flickered open the lighter to light a cigarette. “Is there something that you want that you need to personally give me a visit?”

“You trade information with Changmin last night, saying that you gain some intelligence to where the new base is going to be based on your undercover job.” Yoochun replied, going straight to the point.

Jaejoong was shocked; he didn’t even manage to get in touch with his team so how the hell could he even contact Changmin under his pathetic condition? “I didn’t. I was busy last night.”

“Care to tell me where you are last night then?” Yoochun muttered, noticing how guarded Jaejoong was in not trying to reveal what had happened last night. “Or would you like to spend a few hours in the local jail cell till I figure out where you were yesterday’s night? I wouldn’t mind you know. I’m going to be here for a few days anyway.”

“I really don’t want to talk about it.”

“Oh but you have to. At least if you want to clean your name because from my point of view, you are becoming more and more of a traitor to me and as you know, my tolerance of traitors are very low indeed.”

Jaejoong hesitated but only for a moment. This was getting serious; no way in hell would he be labeled a traitor if he wasn’t one. “I was with Yunho last night.”

“With? You are spying on him, right?” Yoochun replied, raising his eyebrows.

“I...” He avoided the other man’s face as he stood up, leaving a trail of smoke behind him. “I slept with him last night.”

There was a horrible pause as Yoochun slowly took the information in. This case was definitely going very differently than the way he was planning it to. Dammit, why does everything have to fall apart at the same time?

“I asked you to follow him, not to whore yourself to a guy who is linked to one of the state’s enemies. Did you realize what you have just done?”

“I know.” Shoulders slumped, Jaejoong felt as though he really had been shot down. “It all happened really fast. Would I be arrested?”

“I really would love to have your ass for flirting when you are supposed to be working but there are more pressing matters that I need to attend to. Someone had impersonated you last night; I figured the unknown suspect had enough skills to imitate your voice and to get access to the code that we used in this case.”

“What the hell happened?”

“Someone told Changmin to go to a hoax place. There was a shoot out last night. And of course, it wouldn’t be you since you were busy getting it on with your undercover subject. No matter, someone is out there, trying to sabotage our case.” Yoochun sighed as he realized the complications that were coming in. “This was more serious than I thought. I can’t believe there’s a fucking mole in our force. I have to go.” Yoochun stood up from the couch that he was sitting on.

“WAIT! What do I have to do now?” Jaejoong asked, confused at the sudden turnout of events.

“Too bad that I still need you to remain undercover. “ Yoochun smirked. “I would erase your history in the force. Within two hours, you would become a normal abiding citizen that has nothing to do with the police force. I bet Yunho would want to check what you have been up to before getting sizzling with you all the more. You would stay undercover; get as much information as you can. By the way, if you want to fuck, do that while you are not on the job. Better yet, try to control your desire. It’s not good to play with fire, didn’t your parents teach you that?” Yoochun asked, sarcasm evident in his voice.

“What if Yunho already know? Wouldn’t my brother already tell him of my identity?”

“Junsu is a private man; he wouldn’t risk anyone of having an advantage over him, that would be dangerous for him. You, Mr. Kim, is unfortunately a liability to your dear brother. And besides, I have been working with criminals for far too long. They wouldn’t risk anything that has to do with our kind. They hate us, and Yunho seem to be the kind of guy that has a lot of pride. He wouldn’t sleep with you if he knows that you are a cop. So you do not need to worry about it unless you wanted out of this operation?” Yoochun smirked.

Jaejoong glared at the other man. “You should know me well enough to know that I’m sticking around for a while. You know, just until I could find a mean to bust your ass.”

Yoochun laughed, just because he was particularly amused. “I really want to say that we are not risking our lives but we are. Any one of those criminals could kill us without an ounce of consciousness in them. I hope you know that Yunho could shoot you at any point of time to get what he wanted. And I don’t want to know that by the end of the day, you let yourself be shot just because you let something to get in between your duty as a police officer and a bandit’s lover.” Yoochun gripped Jaejoong’s shoulder tight.

Jaejoong’s hands trembled. “I’m not going to do anything stupid. I promise.”

“Put it in your conscious tonight so that you wouldn’t be as naïve as Changmin. There’s always a thin line between doing what’s right and covering what’s wrong. In the end, no matter what you feel, no matter what you do; you still have the responsibility to arrest Yunho just like any other criminal you have come across.” Yoochun spoke. “Doing nothing is the same as digging yourself a grave. Remember, you are a cop. No matter what, you are the only one that could justify why you are wearing the army uniform.”

And a minute later, Yoochun was gone, leaving Jaejoong with his guilt and determination to do what’s right.

The figure sat on the bench overlooking the city. It could be as cold as the refrigerator back at his hotel room at night, that’s why he disliked US to start with. Puffing his cheeks, he felt a presence beside him.

“You got the tape?” The man who had just arrived spoke.

“It was hot.” He commented. “I really liked what I see.”

“Stop this shit. We are here for Hazeid. You want Yunho’s ass, do it on your own time.”

“Ahh but don’t you know? I like to multi-task.”

“It could kill you someday.”

“And until that day, I’ll continue to do things my own way. Sayonara.”

As you can see, Yoochun had a lot going on his mind, especially after knowing what had happened to both side of his charges. It wasn’t going all great for him, that’s why it was important for him to convince min and jae not to forget their duties as cops. ^.^
