“Perfect. Hire him.” Sotomura Kichisaburo, a man in his early fifties with a clean cut face and unfathomable demeanor who was the Chief of Security to the Prime Minister of Japan directly spoke as soon as he saw the documents containing the personal data of an ex-military sniper who now worked for a secret international anti-crime organization known as InDeCo or International Defense Confederation.
“With all due respect, sir, don’t you think that his data is a bit vague?” The younger man who turned out to be a younger colleague of the Chief of Security gave out unsolicited words. “I-I’m sorry… Sir, I shouldn’t have spoken otherwise asked.”
Sotomura Kichisaburo’s eyes twinkled with amusement as he continued to stare at the document, specifically on the small picture attached to the personal data. He perfectly knew the reason why the agent’s personal data was vague but kept it to himself. “I want him in my office tomorrow, eight AM, sharp.” He strictly instructed.

“How was Paris?” Lieutenant Nakamura Ienari, a woman in her early thirties spoke as soon as a younger colleague of hers entered her office. She was surprisingly clad in a casual white sleeveless tight-fitting top and black skinny jeans with leather boots rather than in formal attire. What gave out her identity was the shining military dog tag dangling around her neck with a rugged horizontal line on the center.
“Boring.” The agent answered with a confidently smug expression on his face as he met his superior’s eyes. He was about 5’9 in height, medium-built, dyed blonde hair, pale skin, a mixture of Caucasian and Mongolian features, arrogant nose, luscious lips, and with strikingly unique, smoky blue-grey colored eyes. Unlike other agents who cowered under Lt. Nakamura’s scrutinizing eyes, Shinichi was very different. He met the woman’s fierceness with a viciousness of his own.
“Got a new one for you.” She winked as she picked up a folder on her desk and handed it to the younger agent.
“Will it be exciting?” The younger man asked, coinciding with her somewhat teasing attitude towards him.
“Oh, I’m sure it will be for you… I can’t wait ‘til we start our mission together.” There was a hidden meaning behind her words and Shinichi did not miss it. He took in a deep breath before he opened the folder that was handed to him. “Guess what, Hara? You’re going back to high school!” Lt. Nakamura grinned like a Cheshire cat as she broke the news to the younger agent.
Upon hearing what his superior said, Shinichi’s head perked up as his expression turned into utmost horror. “What?!”
“The Chief of Security to the Prime Minister demands to see you in his office tomorrow, eight AM, sharp. Good luck, Thanatos-kun. I’m sure you’ll need it.”
Hara Shinichi or simply known as Hara to his colleagues under InDeCo was a former military sniper from the United States. Former, not because he resigned, but rather, he was ejected from service… and jailed. He was charged with murder because of blowing up the head of a senior officer, specifically, a highly respected General. Surprisingly though, he didn’t run from his crime. Instead, he surrendered himself to his officials and informed them that he had just blown up the head of a General. For what reason? Quoting from his answer then, ‘Crap happens’.
Shinichi gritted his teeth as soon as he walked out of Lt. Nakamura’s office. With calculated and deeply controlled steps, he returned to his quarters. Once he was safely inside, only then did he release his annoyance and hastily read the contents of the folder. His aggravation turned into anger and rage when he finished reading the contents of the entire document. There was absolutely no way he was going to agree on doing this mission. Absolutely no way.

The next morning, Shinichi found himself standing inside the office of the Chief of Security to the Prime Minister, Sotomura Kichisaburo. From a third person’s point of view, Shinichi looked like an ordinary young man clad in a simple black shirt with a nonsensical abstract print on the center, simple blue denim jeans and rubber shoes, with a black beanie on top of his head. He looked absolutely ordinary, except for the fact that he was standing inside the spacious office of the man responsible for the protection and safety of the head of government of Japan.
“Agent Thanatos, or perhaps, Hara-san.” Sotomura’s voice was gruff but with an authoritative tone. “I assume you’ve been informed of your mission?” His eyes, though old with age, still did not miss a single movement as he studied Shinichi under thorough observation.
“Yes, sir.” Came Shinichi’s monosyllabic reply.
After all these years, Shinichi did not fail to feel the same sense of familiarity as he faced the man who once raised him. Sotomura Kichisaburo was a friend to Shinichi’s mother. When she died, it was the man in front of him now who took care of him and brought him to the United States. He was also the person responsible for training him for combat, espionage and precision shooting. He and the man ultimately separated ways when Sotomura came back to Japan and Shinichi became a military sniper. He didn’t expect that they’d meet again in such a situation. Sotomura was now his superior officer.
Truth of the matter was that Shinichi didn’t want to be involved in such a bogus mission. Shinichi takes a lot of pride in his talent as a sniper and his reputation as a highly respected agent of InDeCo. He was no amateur to be put in such a meager mission. However, upon remembering how Lt. Nakamura attacked him, he secretly cringed. The woman was a walking mouth… a very nasty walking mouth with a much nastier temper, who unfortunately, has superb affinity with guns and bombs.
“Good. I assume you are ready then. Your superior, Lt. Nakamura, shall further brief you before the mission. In the meantime, the Prime Minister wants to see you in his office.” Sotomura’s instructions were clear and precise.
After their very brief talk, Shinichi was escorted towards the office of the Prime Minister. He was led into a bigger office filled with pricey furniture and decorative paintings. He soon stood face to face with the most powerful man in Japan, Prime Minister Kago Masato. The man was in his late forties. His hair was neatly combed with little graying areas at the side of his scalp. His face exuded kindness as he smiled at the newly arrived guest.
“It’s my honor to meet you, Mr. Prime Minister.” Shinichi bowed politely as a form of respect towards the highly authoritative figure before him. Beside Shinichi stood a burly looking man who was obviously part of the security personnel.
“The pleasure is all mine, Hara-san.” The Prime Minister replied. Shinichi was surprised to have heard a kind tone from the Prime Minister. He expected the man to be arrogant and authoritative. Obviously, he was wrong. “Since you are here now, I think it would be best that I introduce you to my daughter.” The Prime Minister spoke and motioned his secretary to call for his teenage daughter.
After a few minutes, the door to the Prime Minister’s office forcefully swung open and revealed a confident-looking girl who strutted authoritatively inside the room. The first thing that caught Shinichi’s attention was the girl’s eyes. They were red… bloody red, the kind that you see in horror movies. They were obviously contact lenses but they were kind of creepy and intimidating. Surprisingly, she looked perfectly fine with them.
After getting over the surprise of seeing bloody red eyes, it was only then that Shinichi noticed the girl’s overall appearance. She was about 5’5 in height, slender figure, long luscious wavy raven locks and porcelain skin. She was dressed in a white baby tee with a bold black print saying ‘Dangerous’, a red skirt, matching the color of her eyes and white rubber shoes.
“Ohayou, Otoo-san!” She greeted cheerfully and planted a kiss on her Father’s cheeks. After which, her expression immediately changed into distaste upon the sight of him. She walked towards him and with highly intimidating eyes, she scrutinized him from head to foot and back. “Who’re you?” She asked snobbishly as she placed both her arms across her chest. For a moment, Shinichi allowed his eyes to meet hers. Bloody red met the bluest of blue.
“He’s your new bodyguard, Miharu. His name is Shinichi.” It was the Prime Minister who took the initiative to answer her question.
Miharu continued to stare at Shinichi who averted his gaze as he tried to avoid her intimidating eyes. She soaked in every inch of clue she could find to figure out what type of personality he had. His hair was arbitrarily hidden under a black beanie and it looked surprisingly looked good on him. His choice of clothes were… too casual, too trying hard to blend in. She also noted seeing three black studded earrings and a silver dangling cross earring, on his right ear alone. Then, she proceeded to scrutinize his face. There was a somewhat feminine touch to his pale face, completely in contrast to his sharp and unforgiving eyes. His eyes? They were the exact complement of hers. They were the bluest of blue… even more accentuated by his long and curly lashes. And with a close look, Miharu could tell that he wasn’t wearing any contact lenses.
To Shinichi’s surprise, Miharu smiled, lifted her hand and motioned for a handshake. “Hi! I’m Kago Miharu, the daughter of the Prime Minister of Japan and I don’t like you!” She said in a disturbingly cheerful voice with that disturbingly cheerful smile, added with her disturbingly bloody red eyes. The girl did not only look intimidating. She was… scary.
Before Shinichi could utter a reply, the Prime Minister already spoke. “Miharu…” He groaned in a semi-pleading voice. It was obvious that even he, despite being a Prime Minister, had a little problem controlling his very own daughter.
“What?” She asked innocently, turning her attention to her Father and dropping her hand to her side. “I was just being honest.” She shrugged.
“Miharu, he’s going to be your eighth bodyguard. I assume you didn’t like the other ones as they were too obvious, so I asked Shinichi here to go undercover as a student in your school. It’s for your safety. You know that.” The Prime Minister explained but it seemed like Miharu didn’t hear what he said.
Miharu continued to survey Shinichi, intimidating him further. But Shinichi did not speak, he didn’t even move from where he stood and he refused to meet her eyes. He refused to be affected by her taunts and by doing so, he unconsciously aggravated Miharu. She began encircling him, surveying everything about him. All too suddenly, Miharu stopped walking and stood behind Shinichi. With a glint of mischief on her eyes, she unexpectedly snatched the gun on the waist of the security personnel and straightly aimed it behind Shinichi’s skull.
“What are you going to do now?” She asked with a smirk on her face and an expression of amusement clearly written on her face.
“Miharu!” The Prime Minister and the security personnel were alarmed with her sudden action. “Miharu! Put the gun down!” He ordered but then again, Miharu was unfazed. She continued with her little daredevil stunt, even pushing the gun forward, burying the tip of the gun in Shinichi’s scalp.
“Relax, Otoo-san. I know what I’m doing.” Miharu confidently spoke.
“Do you know that you could be imprisoned by pointing that gun at me?” It was only then that Shinichi spoke. His tone was bland, not revealing any emotion, not even aggravation nor annoyance. He had learned to control his emotions over the course of military training. With situations like these, it proved very useful. Slowly, Shinichi turned around and faced Miharu. By then, the gun was no longer aiming behind his skull, in fact, it was already aiming at his face. Miharu grinned mischievously.
“I know that. But I’m the only daughter of the Prime Minister. He wouldn’t allow me to be imprisoned now, would he?” Apparently, she knew what advantages she had and she wasn’t afraid to flaunt them. The girl was obviously the devil’s incarnate. “So what are you going to do now?” She repeated. Her tone was mocking and challenging.
“I don’t want to hurt you.” He replied, again, with the bland tone.
Miharu suddenly felt appalled. Here she was, holding the gun at his face yet he’d still have the gut to tell her that?! Preposterous! How he could he possibly hurt her when she could blow up his head in one click of the trigger. He was obviously bluffing and Miharu was only eager to prove him wrong. “Humor me.” She replied.
After hearing what she said, Shinichi fluidly took a side-step and stood at her side while he held the gun in place. With his hand on top of hers, he pulled back the upper barrel of the gun, thereby releasing the loaded bullet and at the same time, pushed the button on the side of the handle, releasing the ammo. Before the ammo fell to the floor, Shinichi expertly caught it and made sure to show a confident smirk at Miharu who stood wide-eyed in place.
“How can you shoot someone with a gun without bullets?” He asked continuing to smirk.
Instead of sulking, Miharu suddenly let off an amused chuckle. “He’s hired.” She said and turned her back on the Prime Minister. “Oh, and drop the blonde hair. Change it to black.” She said as she looked over at Shinichi, then handed the bullet-less gun back to the security personnel and strode out of the room with her head held high.
Shinichi stood dumbfounded, unable to believe the scene that occurred to him. That girl… was definitely something. On their very first meeting, she pointed a gun at him. Talk about a very warm welcome. He looked at the Prime Minister, then back to the door which only seconds ago, the girl had gone through. A thought wandered silently inside Shinichi’s mind. ‘Was she really the daughter of the Prime Minister?’ He asked.
