Ishiguro Ryou walked along the corridors of Kairan Academy with a highly bored look on his face. His eyes were droopy and his wavy black hair was being carelessly blown by the wind. He yawned as he traced his steps among other who students who were on their way to Kairan as well. Every inch of his body screamed defiance to the sense of boredom that was enveloping him. However, nothing much has been happening at Kairan lately. No exciting news, no new stories to tell, just same old Kairan with its predictable band of students.
Kairan Academy wasn’t a bad school per se. The level of education doesn’t significantly lag behind in comparison to other high schools. However, for each high school level in Kairan, there was always one section which was full of those regarded as high school delinquents. This was where Kairan’s reputation as the lowest ranking high school in all of Japan originated from, though of course, it wasn’t true. The Vice Principal had continually made actions to dissolve those four sections, but his attempts always fell in vain as the Principal, as well as the Board of Directors seemed deaf of his pleas. This was logically due to the fact that Ishiguro Ryou’s Father was the head of the Board of Directors of Kairan. And Ishiguro Ryou was one of the students belonging to the section-full of delinquents.
“Ohayou…” Ishiguro Ryou greeted with a bland tone as he entered Class 3-D’s classroom and proceeded to his usual seat next to the window. He soon received a tap of drum sticks on his shoulder by his good friend and fellow student, Nakashima Taiki.
“Yo! Why are you looking so down today?” Nakashima Taiki looked at Ryou eagerly. He was about as tall as Ryou, who was 5’8 in height, only he was skinnier with spiky dyed-blonde hair and his face was one with an exceptional charm and charisma. Other than being hailed as the handsomest guy in Kairan, Nakashima Taiki was also famous for being the devil drummer of the band The Seventh Sin. Why the devil drummer? It was mostly attributed to the fact that he seemed to lose his good temperament when he’s sitting behind his drum set.
“Well… Could it be that you still haven’t heard the news?” Taiki added questioningly.
“News? What news?” Ryou looked back at Taiki and waited for his reply.
“We got third year transferees!” Taiki stood up and smiled dreamily as he brushed his blonde hair aside. “Not just one, but two transferees! Aaahhh… I heard one of them will be female… Omo! That means another addition to my fan club…” Taiki sighed dramatically and placed his hand on his forehead in a gesture which expressed distress. All the females inside the room suddenly stood up from their seats and created a crowd around Taiki as they all swooned over the guy’s irresistible charm.
“Taiki-sama~!!!” The fan girls chorused with small hearts literally appearing on their eyes in place of their eyeballs. Yes, even though Class 3-D was the section filled with those regarded as delinquents who were in third year high school, it was also one of the undeniably famous sections among students, especially among girls. Reason? Aside from Nakashima Taiki, there were two other guys who were undoubtedly two of the most wanted guys in Kairan.
“Oi, oi! Taiki! Stop with the theatrics already. It’s too early in the morning for that.” Ryou complained as he pulled his friend aside and pushed him to sit back on his seat. “Tell me about these transfer students. What have you heard?” Ryou’s face was rather full of wonder than glee as he heard the news. Kairan very rarely had transferees unless, they were either kicked from their previous schools or they were delinquents. ‘I wonder what kind of outcasts they were throwing at Kairan this time…’ Ryou thought.
“Well, the only thing I heard was that one of them is female and she’s somehow prominent or something. Rumor has it that the female transfer student has dropped out of five high schools already and Kairan will be her sixth… That’s quite a record for a female, don’t you think?” Taiki easily pointed one critical characteristic out. Although Kairan was a home for delinquents and thugs, they were mostly males. This was the first time that a female would be transferring due to reason of delinquency.
“That’s… unexpected. What section were they going to be?” Ryou asked again.
“Well, Class 3-D’s the only one with open slots and not to mention that they transferred in the middle of the school year…”
“What about Akira? Does he know anything more about it?” Ryou asked as he looked at Kuroda Akira’s seat, but he was soon hushed up when he saw their homeroom adviser, Mr. Shinohara Kintaro, entered the room. The whole class hushed up upon the sight of the teacher with the meanest set of eyes. Nobody spoke a word when he slowly made his way to the back the classroom, towards the seat of one of the most troublesome students in Kairan.
Ryou and Taiki cringed as they predicted what was about to happen. After a few more seconds, a loud whacking sound of a book being forcefully whacked on a person’s head reverberated inside the classroom, followed by a violent shout. “I-Itttaaaaiiii!!! Ow… What the hell was that fo-…?!” Kuroda Akira, Class President of Class 3-D was about to complain about the violent whack on his head but was suddenly shut up when he saw that it was their homeroom teacher, Mr. Shinohara who stood in front of him. He scratched the back of his head and bowed his head down low with a look of embarrassment written all over his face.
‘Baka…’ Ryou and Taiki snickered silently.
Kuroda Akira was a third year high school student in Kairan Academy. He’s about 5’8 in height, medium built with long unruly dark brown hair and an exceptionally handsome face. What set him apart from most high school students at Kairan was his unparalleled reputation as the leader of Class 3-D, who was always asleep in class and his unsurpassed popularity as the rhythm guitarist and vocalist of the band The Seventh Sin.
Shinohara-sensei heaved out a tired sigh before walking back to the front of the class. He looked like a typical homeroom teacher except for his exceptionally mean eyes which looked like no more than slits when he’s terribly mad. He had been handling Class 3-D for a few months now yet he still could not understand why students with highly different levels of competency and attitudes chose to remain as classmates since their first year in high school up to now. There had been students in his class who were offered to be transferred to the top section but still, they chose to remain with Class 3-D, which was undoubtedly, one of the most unpredictable and troublesome sections in Kairan Academy.
“I have an announcement to make…” Shinohara-sensei spoke out loudly in front.
Taiki raised his hand and spoke. “It’s about the transfer students, isn’t it?” He eagerly asked.
“Yeah…” Shinohara-sensei nodded. “I want you all on your best behavior. We have two transferees coming in today.” Shinohara-sensei approached the door and motioned the students outside to come in.
Taiki felt anticipation build up inside him. His eyes and grin grew wider each passing second. It was as if his whole world was in slow motion as he watched out for the transfer students. The first one to enter was a lanky looking male with thick raven locks. He was looking down so Taiki didn’t have a good look on his face. However, this did not even shake the building anticipation inside Taiki. After all, it was not the male transfer student he was watching out for. He continued to stare, waiting for the highlight of the introduction, however, all too suddenly… “Ehhh?!” Taiki loudly complained. The second student to come in was still a male student. “Where’s the female transferee?!” He asked.
Shinohara-sensei looked at him with a puzzled expression. “What female transferee?” He asked. “Anyway, Class, I’d like you to meet your new classmates.” Shinohara stepped aside and gave the floor to the two male transfer students to allow them to introduce themselves.
The first one to introduce himself was the raven-haired guy with a silver cross earring dangling on his right ear. He was bowing his head low, however, when he finally looked up to see everyone in class, most of the female students gasped glued to their seats as if hypnotized by the bluest shade of blue that was the color of his eyes. They were even more enamored with the newly arrived student who matched Taiki’s charm when he suddenly flashed a charmingly carefree smile.
“Hello, everyone, my name’s Fujiwara Shin. Ano… Uhm… I like playing basketball and guitar… It’s nice to meet all of you… Let’s all get along together, ne?” A loud ‘awwww’ was heard in the background as the girls began swooning on their seats.
There was absolutely nothing thuggish on Fujiwara Shin’s outer appearance. His uniform was properly worn with no visible creases. His face didn’t look like it had ever encountered a fight. These observations made Akira a little bit interested but soon after, he yawned and tried his best not to fall asleep. Surely, there must be something big that was going to happen if unusual things such as these began piling up.
On the other hand, Ryou snickered on his seat and whispered something sounding like ‘Taiki’s match’ while Taiki was momentarily caught in shock as he stared at the man up front. His aura suddenly changed from disappointment to the feeling of impending doom. Though his outside features looked like he was taken aback, his inner self screamed a loud and reverberating ‘NOOOOOOOO’ as he protested against the new transfer student.
The next one to introduce himself was the guy with dark thick-rimmed glasses dominating most of his face. His posture was slouched down and his dark brown hair was neatly combed in place. He was obviously nervous as he fiddled with his bag which he hugged closely on his chest. “Erm… Ah… Ano… I’m… Saitou Kenta… I transferred from… Kyotei Academy… And…” He stuttered.
Upon the mention of Kyotei Academy, whispers and murmurs arose from the students. Even Shinohara-sensei threw a look of pure disbelief at the new student named Saitou Kenta. Unlike Kairan, Kyotei Academy was a famous school for the rich and highly gifted students. It was one of the top high schools in Japan, both in academic standards and in passing rate at Tokyo University. It was quite appalling for someone from Kyotei Academy to transfer to Kairan. It was illogical and unbelievable.
“I-I… I transferred to Kairan because… I want to be strong!” Saitou Kenta looked so serious and determined as he spouted the last sentence. However, his sudden outburst caused almost all of the students inside the classroom to laugh out loud. Even Akira, who was struggling to keep himself awake, suddenly had a bemused smile on his face. The students’ reaction, however, made Kenta’s face be filled with a deep crimson hue. Beside him, Fujiwara Shin only smiled lightly as he gave Kenta’s shoulder a friendly tap. “… Pleased to meet all of you…” Kenta shyly added in a soft voice after hearing the reaction of the students.
Shinohara-sensei banged the teacher’s table loudly and immediately earned the attention of the students once again. “Alright… Fujiwara, you may sit behind Nakashima Taiki… And Saitou, you may sit beside Kuroda Akira…” Shinohara-sensei shortly instructed. After which, he watched as the two new students take their seat and began his lecture on the History of Asian countries, specifically, they were about to tackle the history of the Korean peninsula.
Class was boring as usual, except for Taiki’s obvious animosity towards the person sitting behind him in class. Saitou Kenta was also trying his best to talk to Akira, asking things about who was the best fighter in Kairan and where could he find him. Apparently, Akira was too sleepy to even pay attention to the new student beside him.
It was only Ryou who paid little glances to both of the new students while trying to figure out what kind of persons they were. It was quite suspicious for two students who had no whatsoever delinquency record to transfer at Kairan in the middle of the school year. The first one looked like he came from a well-off family. Ryou wondered briefly why he chose Kairan when he looked like he could afford going to a more sophisticated high school. He then shifted his gaze to the second student. He was from Kyotei Academy and he looked like a complete geek. He mentioned something about wanting to be strong. For a moment, Ryou sighed and pitied the guy. ‘What was he thinking when he decided to transfer to Kairan?’ He thought and shook his head in disapproval.
With the unprecedented events of the day, there was only one thing Ryou could be sure of: things were beginning to move about inside Kairan. “Omoshiroi… Truly interesting…” He whispered to himself.
