Chapter 09: "A Set-Up"

Translations: Konnichiwa- Good afternoon, Baka- Stupid/Fool, Minna- Everyone, Arigatou- Thank you, Iie- No, Hai- Yes

A/n: The prefix -senpai is used after the name of an upper class at school or usually someone who's senior over another.–sama is used to denote great respect for someone whom one admires.

Almost one-third of Class 3-D were left inside the room, waiting for instructions for their detention. All of them looked bored and exasperated as they waited for Shinohara-sensei to tell them of their punishment. Suddenly, as Shinohara-sensei was speaking, a rock came hurling through the glass pane as the loud sound of breaking glass reverberated loudly. Furious and aggravated, Shinohara-sensei looked out to see who had done such a thing.

“Sensei! Me! Me! Me! I threw the rock! Me!” Saitou Kenta was jumping up and down, flailing his arms wildly to attract the teacher’s attention.

“Saitou!!! DETENTION!!!” Shinohara-sensei’s eyes formed slits as he pointed at the student.

“Yosh~!!!” Instead of being scared of detention, Saitou Kenta even rejoiced, knowing that he’ll be joining Akira and the others. He quickly ran towards the classroom and cheerfully greeted everyone with much enthusiasm. “Konnichiwa, minna-san! I’ll be joining your detention~!” He grinned idiotically and scooted over the seat beside Akira. “Konnichiwa, Kuroda-san! Looks like it’s fated that I follow your example!”

“Fate?” Ryou repeated.

“What fate?” Taiki seconded.

“Baka…” Akira muttered under his breath.

Shinohara-sensei exasperatedly cringed at the audacity of such band of students. Furthermore, why would the daughter of the country’s Prime Minister be involved in such a troublesome bunch? Imagine, a handsome flower boy, a sleep-loving class president, a bored genius, a gentlemanly nice guy… and now, a seemingly over-enthusiastic nerd. Mix them in with about eight to ten more students who seem to be an expert at attracting trouble and what do you get?

Chaos.

Exactly.

“Alright, I shall designate the punishments now. All of you shall be doing these chores for the next two weeks on rotation. I’m warning all of you, don’t try to skip or escape from your punishments. You wouldn’t want to get in trouble with me.” Shinohara sensei began and opened a notebook containing the designated chores. “Hmm… We will have three groups for three chores. First group will be headed by Nakashima Taiki. Second group by Kuroda Akira. Third group by Ishiguro Ryou…”

Miharu ended up being with Taiki and Kenta on the first group together with three other students. Their chore assignment was to clean the Science Laboratory equipments. Miharu wanted to complain and switch groups instead since she knew that it would be more convenient to be with Shin, however, she was given no chance to do so as Taiki already dragged her out of the room and unto the Science Laboratory.

Cleaning the Science Lab equipments wouldn’t have been a big bother if it weren’t for the fact that Taiki had taken every opportunity to convince Miharu to join his ever-growing fan club. Miharu could only smile uncomfortably in reply. She really couldn’t get the point of joining the guy’s fan club. Okay, so maybe Taiki had the qualities to qualify him as handsome, but so did Ryou, Akira and Shin. She just didn’t get the point why the guy would fuss over something incredulous as a fan club.

“… As I was saying, there are countless benefits if you join my fan club. First, fan club activities are held every month. You get to have lots of friends and meet a lot of people. My fan club also has a monthly publication of my Photo book which features me, of course. And you also get a free pink fan club shirt with my signature and an adorable pink heart pin as a form of identification that you are a member of my fan club~” Taiki continued to rant.

“Ehehe… Ano… Taiki-kun, I don’t think - ” Miharu was about to reply when the door to the Science Laboratory suddenly burst open, revealing a dozen of girls holding brooms and cleaning materials. Miharu was about to ask who they were but suddenly stopped herself when she saw the pink heart-shaped pin on the girls’ chest. “Ugh…” Miharu groaned.

“Taiki-sama~~~! We apologize for being late…” A tall girl who seemed to be the leader of the fan club stepped forward and bowed before Taiki.

As if on cue, Taiki smiled charmingly as he grazed his bangs aside. “Ahhh… Minna, I’m so glad to see all of you… Of course, it’s okay even if you guys were late. I know that you are all busy with different things. Unfortunately, I am only a small part of your lives… I have no right to complain…” His smile turned into a melancholic one as he dramatically slumped on a nearby chair and looked like a helpless person.

“Seriously…” Miharu was about to speak when she was suddenly hurled sideways. Apparently, Taiki’s fan girls were deeply touched by the guy’s theatrics so they hurriedly went to his side. They all held a handkerchief to him as they feared that he would cry.

“Taiki-sama, don’t say such a thing!”

“You mean so much to us…”

“We could not imagine living life without you.”

“Minna~~~ Arigatou!” Taiki’s eyes were crystally as he held his arms to his fan girls who eagerly received his embrace.

Miharu sighed and was about to turn away when someone suddenly called her name out loud. “Kago-senpai!” It turned out to be Akimoto Asuka, the same girl she saved from a bunch of bullies. She merrily scooted over to Miharu and grinned as she saw her. “You’re in detention too?” She asked.

“Uh… Hai… What about you? What are you doing here?” Miharu asked.

Almost proudly, Asuka showed her pink heart pin to Miharu. “I’m a new member of Taiki-sama’s fan club!” She grinned as Miharu’s mouth formed an ‘O’. “I’ve been thinking of joining a club since I’ve never been active in extra-curricular activities… Taiki-sama invited me so I decided to join. You should join too! It’s fun! Everyone’s very eager to support Taiki-sama.” She began to sound like Taiki as well.

Miharu smiled awkwardly. “I think I’ll just start cleaning… Excuse me…” She secretly groaned and exited the room.

Since the laboratory was divided into three rooms, Miharu decided to transfer to the next room instead. The moment she entered the room, she saw no other than Saitou Kenta who sat by a corner and was fully-occupied talking over the phone. He looked like he was hiding some big secret as he talked in hushed tones.

“Iie… Don’t wait for me over dinner. I’m going to be late… I’m… I’m staying for detention… What? No!!! I mean, don’t come here… Really, I can handle detention. I can take care of myself… Baka! Don’t tell Oji-chan!” When he turned around, he was surprised to have seen Miharu eyeing him suspiciously. “Ah! I have to go! Bye-bye!” He ended the call and chuckled nervously in front of Miharu. “Kago-san! What are you doing here?” He asked instead, trying to hide the discomfort that was etched across his face.

“I’m on detention too, remember?” Miharu replied nonchalantly.

Miharu was about to turn away from Kenta when he suddenly hugged her with both arms and pushed her down to the floor. “Kago-san!!!” He shouted as he pushed her. They both ended up lying on the floor. Kenta on top of Miharu.

Realizing their over-compromising situation that they were in, Miharu immediately pushed Kenta aside, causing him to bump his head unto the side of a table and dropping his glasses to the floor. Of course, his eye-glasses broke as soon as they fell.

“Oww…”

“What the hell is your problem?! What was that for?!” Miharu was ready to blow off some steam unto Kenta when he suddenly pointed towards the wall, where an arrow was sticking out. Miharu walked towards it and realized that the arrow had been directed at her. She got the arrow off the wall and found that a note has been attached.

LEAVE KAIRAN. OR ELSE.

“What does the note say?” By then, Kenta had gotten up from the floor and stood beside Miharu as he took a peek of the note. “That was really dangerous, Kago-san… I wonder who would want to hurt you like that…” He said as he held his broken glasses in his hand.

Without another word, Miharu went out of the room and frantically looked at either side, scanning the whole area for any possible clue as to the whereabouts of the culprit behind the arrow. Clearly, someone wanted her badly out of Kairan Academy and who ever that person was, Miharu wasn’t going to easily back down.

“HEY!!! If you want to drive me out of Kairan, don’t try meager pranks on me! Take me head on! Tomorrow morning! Lunch break! By the covered gym, you and me!!!” She shouted bravely at no one. Of course, she was Kago Miharu, the daughter of Japan’s Prime Minister, why would she easily back down at such lame pranks. If someone wanted her out of Kairan, that someone better be prepared to deal with her.

The next day, as soon as the bell for lunch break rang, Miharu immediately stood up from her desk with a stern expression on her face. She was intent on giving a harsh lesson to the person behind the deadly pranks. Of course, she didn’t forget to tell Shin everything that had transpired. He looked worried and decided to secretly follow her into the covered gym.

The first thing that greeted Miharu upon her entrance inside the covered gym, was the back of a student from Kairan Academy. Slowly, as if in slow motion, the girl turned around and revealed herself. It was no other than the second year student named Kazama Reiko. She stood with both hands on her chest and smugly looked at Miharu. At one glance, it was easy to tell that she had the same air of arrogance as Miharu.

“You-” Miharu began. A faint crease appeared in between her brows as she thought of possible reasons as to why Kazama Reiko would desperately want her out of Kairan. For one, she just recently knew the girl.

“Yes?” Kazama Reiko asked.

Miharu took a tentative step forward towards Kazama Reiko. Her hands were balled into fists and her expression was seriously ticked off. She was beginning to feel a rush of distaste and anger on the girl standing in front of her. On the other hand, Reiko didn’t seem to be bothered much by Miharu’s apprehension as she continued to stand still. Her expression was careless and subdued that she almost looked extremely arrogant.

Before Miharu could take another step nearer towards Reiko, the voice of an unexpected person suddenly spoke. “Reiko… What’s going on here?” It was no other than Ryou with a nonchalant expression on his face. He stood by the entrance of the covered gym with both his hands deeply buried in his pocket.

Miharu did not fail to notice how Akira referred to Kazama Reiko by first name. Clearly, he and the girl were more than comfortable enough with each other. And this little detail greatly aggravated her. But then again, she couldn’t care less anymore. Whatever had transpired between her and Ryou was history. It should remain as it is without continuation.

“Ryou-senpai, I received a note from Kago-senpai telling to me come here today…” Kazama Reiko looked at Ryou with innocent eyes.

“A note?” Miharu stared at Reiko in disbelief. “I didn’t send you a note.” She denied.

Ryou took the necessary steps forward and approach the two girls. He deliberately stood beside Miharu and threw a hesitant look at her before turning his eyes on Reiko. By then, Reiko had taken out a piece of folded paper from her pocket. She wordlessly handed it to Ryou and allowed him to read it. Miharu came to look at it as well.

“That’s not my hand writing.” She vehemently denied.

“I thought it was weird to receive a note from Kago-senpai… We don’t even know each other that well.”

“What about you, Kami-chan? Did you receive a note as well?” Ryou asked.

“Iie… Yesterday, I nearly got hit by an arrow when we-” Miharu began narrating, however, before she could finish, Ryou cut her off as he suddenly grabbed her by the arm. A look of pure concern and distress was written all over his face as he stared intently at Miharu.

“An arrow, you say? You nearly got hit by an arrow? As in bow and arrow in archery?” Ryou gently shook Miharu by the shoulders as he probed for answers. Bows and arrows are dangerous… even more dangerous are those flying towards a person. Though such a weapon was only used in ancient history, it was still a deadly weapon.

For this day and age, only experienced archers would be able to effectively use this weapon. This fact narrows down the possible candidates for the culprit behind the arrow. Apparently, Kazama Reiko was a perfect candidate who fit this category. After all, she has been trained in the art of archery. But then again, that would be true for almost fifty other female students studying at Kairan Academy.

After all, Kairan Academy wasn’t really what it seems. It’s more than just an Academy.

Miharu stared quite distastefully on the hand that was clutching her arm. It was safe to say that she could not tolerate any form of physical between her and Ryou. Apparently, Ryou did not fail to notice this so he slowly withdrew his hand away. It was only then that Miharu began speaking again.

“As I was saying, yesterday, during detention, I nearly got hit by an arrow… That specific arrow contained a note. It says ‘Leave Kairan. Or else.’. After that incident, I got out of the laboratory room and issued a challenge to the one who sent the arrow. It was me and whoever he or she was, today, lunch break at the covered gym.” Miharu explained, looking at Reiko.

“I didn’t send you the arrow.” Kazama Reiko denied. Her eyes were unperturbed and not blinking. She clearly wasn’t lying.

“This was a set-up.” Ryou ultimately deduced.
