Chapter 1

...A blessing in disguise?

It was another busy day. With the joyous spirit of the public holidays still within her, Caroline lazily stuffed her school items into the bag. Yes, it was the beginning of another year at school.

Talking about school, Caroline emitted a heavy sigh for; it was a source of ultimate troubles. Her studies for instance. She could imagine herself with stacks and stacks of homework to be due in a course of one day. It would be terrible juggling all of that at one go. She would probably have a aching head after that. Moreover, she was in secondary three this year and would be under the constant nagging of her mum. Her parents, they were poor but still they managed to support this family. That is, until her father died and her mother become the breadwinner in the family.

Caroline forced herself not to think what other stressing stuffs about school. She hated it. Especially when she was in one of the top mix schools. She started to reproach herself for not packing her bag last night. Silly me, she thought to herself. Knowing perfectly well what she did the night before, she was ashamed of herself and regretted. Playing computer, practically for the whole night, for the same excuse as for usual- the pure enjoyment of the moment.

"Carol!! Get out of your room! You're going to be late! Hurry up!!", her mother screamed at her, reminding her for the second time.

Caroline frowned. "Okay, okay!!", she answered back grumpily.

For a moment, she felt lucky that she closed her bedroom door. She couldn’t bear to imagine what her mother would do to her if she found out that she hadn’t pack her bag until early this morning. Her mother was known for her kindness, yes, yet also for her strictness and tolerance. Well, at least at home.

Caroline hurled her heavy bag up to her shoulder and started to walk out of her room. She passed her computer. Damn. It almost slipped her mind that she had forgotten to switch it off. It was still on. Quickly, she used the mouse to click on the 'menu' and then clicked again on the 'off' icon. Caroline glanced at her watch worn on her left wrist. It was already 7p.m! She ushered the computer to work faster. But it didn’t. Instead, it went on like its normal speed. Without sparing any more precious time, she switched the whole machine's power with its main switch and ran off.

"I'm not eating breakfast!", Caroline shouted as she ran across the kitchen. Then raced down the flights of stairs and finally outside to catch the bus just in the nick of time.

Standing outside the principal's office, alone, Caroline nervously twist and untwist her hands. She was late. Late indeed. Now, she was facing one of the worst happening in her life. The chance to get booked.

Being one of the top schools, the principal was naturally of course, extremely harsh upon the strict rules of the school. The unfortunate thing was, Caroline had already been late for like three times in a row last year and now...

"Caroline!", a furious voice spoke.

Caroline tilted her head up to a small angle. She was definitely in for another scolding. "Yes, Miss-Chung?", she stammered a little.

Miss Chung was her form teacher last year. She was pretty. She had neat short hair and an air of elegance. However, just like her mother, her tolerance was limited. "Do you know that you have broken the school rule for like the umpteenth time already?", she said grimly.

Caroline nodded her head meekly. Her reprimanding had already brought her into her senses. It dawned well into her.

"First day of school and you're late!", Miss Chung remarked at her student's bad behavior. Then she softened her gaze and said:" Well, lucky for you, the principal has decided that she would let go of this matter since its the first day of school". Her tone of voice emphasized on her last four words.

Caroline's heart jumped for joy. "Really? Is it true?", she asked just to be sure. She didn’t believe it. It was too good to be true.

Miss Chung nodded her head and smiled. "Well, the principal seems to be in a good mood to day. Probably that’s the reason why", she said as-a-matter-of-factly. "Now, come. I need to show you to your class"

Caroline greeted the teacher and sat down on the only available seat. She blushed a little when she saw who she was sitting next to.

To her left, was her best friend, James. In fact, he was her childhood friend too.

To her right, was somebody she never knew. However, she had heard of his name, Peter. There were many rumors about him, especially from girls. The only reason why girls love to gossip about a guy is that he is handsome and charming.

Caroline didn’t know what to think of it. Girls are normally blinded by a guy's looks. All she knew was that her cheeks were red.

"Hey..", James said. "You owe me a favor. See? I've specially saved a seat for you." With those words, he winked at her.
