Chapter 19

...Bitter pill

Time: 9p.m.

"I said no. That means NO!" Peter's dad yelled, spelling the start of a awful conversation. His wife frowned at her son, signaling him to go back to his room right away. After all, this issue could be discussed later on, not at this inappropriate time, especially when it has taken place at the dinner table.

Peter ignored his mother's advice. He dragged the conversation on. He knew his limits though. "Why not?" he argued back firmly.

His father let out a laugh. "You still have the guts to ask why? You know it better than us!" he said grimly. Then added: "Your studies! I want you to concentrate on it! Your mind should not be occupied with other stuffs except it! And what about your fiancée? Think about her!"

Sitting beside Peter's father, Peter's mum saw where the conversation was heading. She warned her son once again. It didn’t work. She then laid a restricting arm on her husband.

Those words snapped him up. He blinked. He had almost forgotten about her! But still he was still firm at his decision.

Peter's father sighed. "Haven’t I told you many times, Peter? Do not get entangled with any of this lovey dovey stuff in your teenage years! It wouldn’t do you any good! Just do well for your exams this year alright?" he continued. This time, the severity of his words lessened.

Peter frowned. No, he isn’t going to let his father get into his way this time. "But- I'm in love with her!" he uttered those long-buried words within his heart out.

"Love?" he repeated his son's words. "Don’t talk to me about love! You don’t even know what is love! How dare-" he chided.

Peter interrupted his words. "Why wont you allow me to have my way for once? Is that so difficult? Every time I talk to you about something I desire, you say no. This time, no! I have the right to love someone! You can’t stop me!" he shot back.

"Why, you!" Peter's father said. He clasped his chest. It was starting to hurt. He breathed heavily. Peter's mother showed concern for her husband.

Calmed down, he argued: "Fine. Ok, I wont talk to you about your rights. What we, your mother, and me are doing are all for your good. If you don’t heed our advice, the consequences are dire."

Those words fogged Peter's mind with uncertainty. "What consequences? What are you talking about?" he struggled for words. He was impatient.

Peter's father took a deep breath, like beginning to tell a tale to a child. Then, he began, his tone serious than ever: "The consequences: you will neglect your studies. The company would be at stake! There would be a family feud between your fiancée’s family and ours."

Those words now swirled about within his brain. It was indeed, a bitter pill to swallow.

Too bitter.

Way too bitter.
