Chapter 19

The Day You Went Away

On the way to the airport, Hebe had been zoning out a lot. Genie looked at her from the side and sighed. There was a question she had been wanting to ask Hebe but didn’t know if she should or not, she bit her lip…trying to decide if she should ask it before it’s too late. She took a deep breath and finally let it out, “Bee are you sure you don’t want to say bye to Aaron first? I mean you don’t even know when you’re coming back.”

Hebe turned to face Genie with a fake frown on her face. “What are you talking about?” She gave a small short laugh. “Why do I need to say bye, it’s not like we were dating, we were just pretending – it was all for a deal… for my parents.” She said with a small smile.

Genie frowned at her response knowing she was lying to herself. She crossed her arms and sighed while shaking her head. Her friend is always so stubborn. As they neared the airport she wondered what Hebe had on her mind.

Aaron’s right eye had been twitching all morning and he groaned as it twitched again. He dropped his pen and tried to massage his temple though he was sure it wasn’t lack of sleep.

Calvin charged into his room just as Aaron was massaging his temples. “Yo Aaron, what’s up?” He asked as he took a seat in the chair in front of Aaron’s desk.

Aaron looked up and shrugged. “Nothing.”

Calvin raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with your head?” He said referring to when Aaron was rubbing his temple.

“My right eye’s been twitching all morning.” He groaned as he shook his head.

Calvin smirked. “Something bad is going to happen!” He said. “Like those old phrases people always say – left eye is good, right eye is bad.”

Aaron rolled his eyes. “Since when did you believe in those??” He asked in disbelief.

“I’m just saying.” Calvin said while laughing. “Let’s head out after work.” He suggested. “It’s been a while since the four of us hung out together.” He said. “I don’t think Chun or Jiro is busy tonight…unless if they’re spending it with their girlfriend.” He said rolling his eyes.

Aaron chuckled. “Maybe that just means Mr. Playboy here needs to find himself a girlfriend and go steady.” Aaron teased.

Calvin scoffed. “Not happening any time soon. It sucks, you guys all changed ever since you found yourselves girlfriends.” He kicked at the ground.

“I don’t think you should say that, I’m definitely sensing something between you and Genie.” He said with a smirk.

“What – her? I only bug her because it’s fun seeing her mad.” He said with a grin. “She’s so fun to bug…the way she overreacts at everything is priceless.”

Aaron rolled his eyes as Calvin rambled on with his reasons to why he likes to bug her. ‘And he denies that he likes her.’ Aaron thought inside his head.

“Bee… I’m going to miss you a lot.” Genie said with a big pout and a face that looked like she was ready to cry. Well her eyes were already watering.

Hebe gave a small smile. “Aw I’m going to miss you too. How about this, when you get time off work or like not as busy, you’re always welcomed to visit me.” She offered. “Anytime.”

Genie gave a smile. “Alright then, you said it! You better call me at least once a week or even more than that AND on top of that email too!” She demanded like a little girl.

Hebe chuckled. “Ok, ok, I promise.”

“Bee, I have a question and I want you to honestly answer me.” Genie started off in a serious tone. “Did you actually fall in love with Aaron when you guys were ‘pretending’?” She quoted ‘pretending’ with her index and middle fingers on both her hands.

Hebe sighed. “I don’t even know, I guess so…” She said sadly. “But it’s ok, I’m going to start fresh and new!” She smiled optimistically.

Genie pouted. “Oh I was hoping you’d come back and visit me but then I guess not if the reason you left is because of him.”

Hebe rolled her eyes. “Do I seem that weak to you? If I’m not busy I might come back and visit you too or maybe I’ll have to come back and deal with some business things too, you never know. But I’ll let you know first hand if I am coming back ok?” She reassured her.

Genie lightened up a bit. “Ok that’s a promise then! I’m going to be so sad and bored without you around.” She said with a big, long sigh.

“Don’t worry, I’ll still email and call. Anyways I’m going to head in now…we’ll keep in contact definitely.” She smiled and they exchanged one last hug before Hebe entered the departure gate.

The four guys were hanging out at their hideout or rather more like a ‘reunion’ as Calvin claims since they barely hang out anymore.

“So what’s new with your lives?” Calvin asked as he leaned back and stretched. “Seems like ages since I last saw you two.”

Chun shrugged. “Nothing much, still the same, still the same.” He said.

Jiro smiled proudly. “I’m getting married soon. I proposed to Selina just yesterday and she said yes.”

Calvin, Aaron and Chun’s mouth all gaped open in shock to find that Jiro was getting married so soon.

“Seriously?!” Calvin asked. “You were like… the biggest playboy out of us all back in high school and now you’re telling us that you’re the FIRST one of us four to get MARRIED?!” Calvin was beyond shock obviously.

Jiro shrugged and grinned. “Well you can’t fight against love when it comes. You’ll understand when you find yourself the right girl.” Calvin shuddered at Jiro’s sudden sap.

Aaron laughed. “Oh don’t worry, it’s going to be soon before he finds himself one I’m pretty sure.”

Calvin immediately shot a glare at Aaron. “That’s not true Aaron. I said I don’t like her.”

Chun and Jiro were confused. “What? Who’s that special girl??” They both asked in unison. Calvin only rolled his eyes and refused to talk and Aaron laughed again.

“He’s in denial. She’s a new model under his company – more like he forced her to become one.” Aaron chuckled. “I swear it was hilarious. He totally bribed everyone to make her work for him. I think there’s something significant about that.” He said raising his eyebrows at Calvin and the others all turned to him with a smirk.

“Hey look, I’m doing it for the benefit of my company.” He said trying to clarify things. “She did seem like she is a potential model.”

“OH! Is she that new model who umm did the photo shoot for your new perfume, what’s it called again?” Jiro asked.

“Aurora and yes.” Calvin said. “Well I thought she matched it quite well.” He shrugged. Aaron sniggered beside him and Calvin gave him a punch on the arm for being nosy.

“Why don’t we talk about AARON now.” Calvin said, deliberately changing the subject of the topic. “He’s been really up and down with his life too.” He sniggered back with a smirk.

Chun frowned. “Aren’t you still with Alice?” He asked and Aaron nodded his head. “Then what are you talking about Calvin?”

“Well I’m pretty sure he doesn’t like her anymore.”

“That’s what you’ve been saying ever since they started dating.” Jiro pointed out.

Calvin gave Jiro an annoyed look. “No, no, so you see there’s this other girl whom had to pretend to be his girlfriend for a deal and then so they pretended but I’m sure he likes her now.”

“OH is she the girl that was on the newspaper front page the other day with umm you and her and this other guy?” Chun asked. “I read it and I was a bit confused, no wonder…” He trailed off. “So you like her now? I think she’s pretty.” He commented. “You two match.”

Calvin turned to look at Aaron and nodded his head. “I said that too but he said nooo, he likes Alice.” He scoffed.

Jiro laughed. “Calvin stop being so immature. I’m sure Aaron will understand what he’s feeling.” He said.

Calvin sighed loudly. “Fine, fine, I’ll shut up.” He said and leaned back in his seat again.

“But I do agree with Chun. You two do match together – at least more than you and Alice.” He commented afterwards and Calvin gave Aaron a smug look in victory.

“Oh but then she left.” Calvin said. “And they broke up already.”

“It wasn’t a breakup if we weren’t dating to begin with. It was just clarifying and she didn’t leave, we sorted things out.” Aaron clarified.

Calvin shook his head. “No, no, I meant she did leave, like leave the country leave.” He said.

Aaron dropped the cup he was about to pick up from the table back on the table with a loud ‘clink’ and quickly apologized for being clumsy. “She left...? How do you know?” He asked.

“Genie asked to be excused today to send her off.” He said. “I am her boss after all so I should know what she is doing.” He stated matter-of-factly.

“Did she say where Hebe was leaving to or when she’s coming back then?” He asked casually.

Calvin shook his head. “No that would just be awkward if I started bombarding her with questions about her friend.” He said bluntly.

For the rest of the evening, Aaron felt out of it. Maybe he thought Hebe left because of him.
