Ron and Alex had been looking around many shops. However, Alex’s words marked the reality. There were really too many red watches and pink shirts.
“Grandma, can you tell us if you remember anyone buying this red watch from you?” Ron inquired patiently. This was their last stop – a small shop which sold watches only.
The feeble-looking grandmother stared hard at the photograph that Ron was holding.
“Only five …” she replied.
Ron and Alex gave her bewildered looks.
“Five?” Ron asked again; beads of perspiration were gathering on his forehead. The weather was really killing him; he hated summer when the sun always shone so brightly. The heat was immense. Also, summer was when that accident happened; the accident that changed his life. He hated being reminded of it – his ugly past.
“I only sell five of these, to my regular customers.” The old lady answered and then her eyes widened in happiness. “One of them is her!” Ron and Alex turned to spot a young lady walking towards them, wearing a white sleeveless top and a pair of black shorts. Her hair was shoulder length and she was wearing slippers. Her eyes were bright and gleaming, her lips curved into a smile and the conclusion that Ron and Alex came to was that she was pretty.
“Grandma! Are they bullying you?” the young lady’s smile turned into a frown when she spotted the two men. She hurriedly rushed to the old lady and checked on her.
“I am Alex, a police officer. We are just asking your Grandma some questions. You are …?” Alex flashed a great smile at her, trying his best to charm her.
The young lady hesitated for some moments. “Can you please present evidence to prove that you are really a police officer?”
Ron laughed silently at the lady’s response. Alex had been so caught up with his plans to charm the lady that he had forgotten to present his identity card. Ron was also relieved to see such a smart citizen, obeying the precautions against frauds mentioned by the police force.
Alex then smiled sheepishly, presenting his identity card. The young lady then diverted her attention to Ron, signaling Ron to show his identity card too. Ron held up his identity card with pride.
“Leila, Leila Tong.” The young lady replied casually.
Leila had finished her sumptuous lunch with Raymond and decided to reward herself with a new watch. She loved buying watches. Raymond had left for his work. Never did she expect to see her seeker, Ron Ng and his police friend, Alex. The game of hide-and-seek had ended.
Leila had been debating with herself whether she should reveal her true name or Angel. However, she finally decided to give her real name since the Grandma knew her real name and in this way, she thought the game she had set for herself and the police would be much more interesting. Afterall, she was the thief that they were trying to apprehend. She was in fact getting bored, committing all the thefts without getting caught. The sense of thrill was not satisfactory. She wanted more excitement and thrill.
Ron scrutinised Leila again, thinking that she had looked familiar but he could not remember where he had seen her before. He also noticed that she was not wearing any red watch.
“Did you buy this watch before?” Ron spoke up.
“Yes, a long time ago. It had stopped working and I think it must be lying somewhere in the dump now.” Leila held the photograph and laughed. Ron and Alex were a little taken aback at her laughter. They had not seen anyone who was being questioned in such a casual and relaxed manner. Her laughter and her appearances gave Ron the impression that she was one carefree lady who lived happily.
“Grandma, didn’t you sell the watch to me like a year ago?” Leila turned to ask the old lady. The old lady just smiled and nodded her head; she adored this young lady, Leila, who had been patronizing her shop for years. Leila was always so cheerful and excited over every new watch. Leila had always engaged her, an old lady, in conversations.
“Why are the police finding this red watch? It is out of trend already.” Leila stuck out her tongue playfully. However, her main purpose was trying to find out if she had left any clues that would cause her identity to be exposed.
“No, no. We are just finding the people who have bought this watch. One of them might be a bad thief. However, I am sure that would not be you,” Alex took this chance to chat with pretty Leila. Ron could not believe that Alex just divulged information about a case to a suspect; he immediately turned to nudge Alex and stared at him.
“Feel free to ask me any questions. However, I will be looking around for watches …” Leila then trailed off around, searching for a new watch. Ron was thinking of questions to interrogate Leila but he found out that he could not focus on it. His eyes followed Leila and Alex who was right behind Leila.
“She looks really familiar …” Ron thought and began examining the watches too. Afterall, Alex would not leave until he managed to get that Leila on a date or that he had her contact number.
His eyes shone when he spotted a watch. He loved it at first sight.
It was a watch with a black shiny leather strap. Around the round “clock” on the watch, were small colourful pieces of glass. The colours were enchanting. Inside it, the numbers one to twelve were printed largely. The three hands of the “clock” were moving. The background of it was an outline of the back view of male and female holding hands. In addition, there was a word “ETERNITY” printed as well. Ron bought the watch without hesitation. Surprisingly, Leila bought the exact same watch with him, with the only difference which was that hers was of a white leather strap.
“Grandma, don't start about it…” Leila pouted when she saw that Ron had bought an exact same watch with her. She was surprised at that fact too and somehow, she felt her heart thumping faster.
“Young man, your fate is intertwined with Leila’s. You two look good together. These two watches are a pair, I have purposely placed them at two different and opposite ends of my shop but yet the two of them are still able to find it and buy them at the same time. Destined lovers, I bet …” The old lady rambled.
Ron merely smiled but Leila blushed at the Grandma’s comment. Alex was trying desperately to find the exact same watch too but he failed.
In the end, Leila treated the two policemen to a late lunch.
Leila then rushed off to her appointment with Raymond. She had to stay over at his house tonight.
Ron could not help but chuckle when he noticed the dejected look on Alex’s face. Alex had failed to retrieve much information about Leila. In fact, Alex had got nothing.
Ron’s mind could not stop replaying the words that the Grandma had mentioned “Destined lovers …” He then sighed; there was no new discovery to solve the cases.
Hide-and-seek had ended. They were thought to be the destined lovers but yet one of them was a thief and the other a professional police officer.
“Funny.” Leila thought as she rushed to Raymond’s house. “We shared a relationship of a predator and prey, not love. We can never be together. Life is finally getting a little more interesting …” A mischievous smile crept up her face.
