Friends or Foes

Chapter 8: Friends or Foes

-

Leila yawned and realised that she was sleeping on Raymond’s bed while Raymond was sleeping in the living room.

“Such a gentleman …” Leila thought and proceeded around his house to search for expensive belongings. Raymond seemed to be smitten with her and hence Leila would never be suspected of stealing by Raymond.

Pulling out his drawers and browsing through them, Leila found out that Raymond kept his expensive watches and never wore them. “He must be filthy rich.” Leila came to this conclusion when she saw the shiny and glittering watches inside his drawers. Leila took two and continued her search.

After a breakfast with Raymond, Leila took her loot and sold them to the pawnshop under another fake name and contacts and also a new image. She put on those oversized and ‘out-of-trend’ clothes and acted like a tired and haggard lady in her mid-thirties.

“Two thousand and five hundred dollars … I am rich!” Leila chortled as she strode home to keep the money. She never had a bank account as a bank account would mean another trace of evidence for the police.

Gleefully, she went home and prepared herself for her legal job as a companion buddy. Also, she was awaiting another encounter with Ron Ng. She wondered how long the police force would take to track her down. She had been leading a boring life and now she needed more thrill and excitement. The thefts no longer gave her that satisfactory thrill. She was greedy for more of such ecstasy.

“Leila Tong, you are so weird!” She commented to herself and burst out laughing.

-

Ron was horrified by the theft cases happening in Desiderata area. The cases were piling up and there were not enough evidence to point the thief out. Ron had an intuition that the same thief was committing all the thefts but to break a case, intuition was not valid; evidence must be produced to prove the person’s innocence or guilt.

He scratched his head once more and stared at his watch.

Somehow, his thoughts wandered off to Leila’s laughter and her smiles. Ron decided to find out more about her and he logged into their database. She was a suspect so Ron could try to dig out some information about her.

“No law-breaking records, lived in Desiderata area, jobless and no siblings …” Ron mumbled the information to himself.

He found the word ‘jobless’ intriguing. Leila did not appear to be jobless. Curiosity got the better half of Ron and he decided to take a walk around Desiderata area and to try his luck if he would be able to meet Leila, even though he did not understand why he had to meet her.

-

Leila was now Angel. She was in Eternity then when she saw her predator, Ron Ng, stepping in.

“Oh no!” Leila was thinking that if Ron recognized her, she would be in deep trouble. With her double identities exposed, it would be harder for her to clear her tracks. She was being a bartender now since Nancy needed some help.

“Leila?” Ron had come into the same pub where the famous Angel performed. He needed a drink to cool himself down. He stared at one of the bartenders and wondered if he saw the wrong person. “Angel?”

“A Bloody Mary, please.” Ron ordered and continued staring at the back view of the person he thought would be Leila.

Nancy served Ron his drink and continued to chat with him, in the hope of attracting him. Afterall, Ron was handsome and well-known.

“Are you Ron Ng?” Nancy inquired with a shy smile. Ron smiled politely and nodded.

“Is the drink nice?” Nancy could not think of how to start a conversation and hence resorted to such random and boring questions. Angel wanted to laugh at the question but maintained her cool composure for fear of divulging her own identity. In her mind, she was also forming plans.

Ron answered nonchalantly and waited impatiently for the other bartender to turn and face him. Finally, he asked bluntly, “What is her name?”

Nancy gave a disappointed look and answered, “Angel”. Nancy then pulled Angel to face Ron.

Angel inhaled a deep breath and looked at Ron, their eyes meeting.

“You are Leila, aren’t you?” Ron pointed at her watch.

“Aish! I forgot about this.” Angel blamed herself as she pulled Ron into her room where her clients and she would talk.

“Hi! Please don’t reveal my real name out. I am afraid of crazy guys.” Angel put out the widest smile she ever could.

Ron chuckled at her reaction. “Now, should I call you Leila or Angel?”

“Angel,” Angel replied nonchalantly.

“This room is comfy. What is its purpose?” Ron inquired as he lied on the sofa.

Angel then explained about her job as a companion buddy and began to charge Ron for the consultation fee.

Ron willingly agreed and the two of them chatted happily about almost everything under the sun. The atmosphere became tense when Ron sighed and asked about the theft cases in Desiderata.

“The thief is really smart.” Ron commented and stared at the ground. He had been thinking of many ways to find out even the slightest traces of evidence – fingerprints, skin cells left unknowingly, the clothings and accessories that the suspects wore …

Angel wanted to applaud for herself when she heard the compliment. “I thought the police force always declared to the people that the laws of justice would never fail.”

Ron turned to fix his eyes on Angel. She was pretty, indeed. “The thief I had to catch is supposed to be pretty too. Could it be her?” Ron’s intuition was coming to him again.

Angel was getting worried when she saw Ron’s eyes on her. In addition, he was not replying. Angel calmly walked towards Ron and planted a kiss on his lips. “Do you know you are a very attractive man? I shall not charge you for the kiss.” Angel for once confessed her heartfelt words. She had found Ron to be a captivating man, especially when he was in deep thoughts. Furthermore, Angel knew she had to distract Ron to prevent him from thinking further. She did not want this exciting game to end so quickly.

Ron was taken aback by the kiss. He desired to kiss her again and suddenly, he found his heart thumping faster. His past came back to haunt him again. His heart had thumped rapidly for another female once too. After that accident, his heart became frozen.

“Time’s up! Bye, Ron!” Angel left the room hurriedly.

“Wait! Can I meet you next time?” Ron pulled Angel’s hand.

Angel smiled and gave him her number.

Their relationship was developing for the better and with such developments, Angel’s position was getting dangerous but she just loved the excitement.

Everything would be alright, for Leila, or will things turn out bad?
