Nothing Better

Chapter 9: Nothing Better

-

“Da da da da hum hum hum …” Leila happily whistled, her mind flooded with images;

She had stopped stealing any items for a few days now after Ron’s visit to the pub.

Her logical mind told her to refrain her itchy hands for a while lest suspicion lands on her.

Her irrational heart told her to stop so that she could develop a better relationship with Ron more easily.

She heeded the advice from her mind and heart, no wishes to go against her own will, since she was still the one to stand the advantages of the situation.

Leila smiled to her own reflection in the mirror, after compressing her lips together for a few moments, to ensure her lipstick was evenly put on. She was going out with Ron, for a lunch date. After exchanging numbers, Ron and Leila had managed to keep in contact frequently, updating each other briefly about their lives.

However, Leila had to conjure up several lies each day as even though she stopped stealing, she still continued to con men for their money. She was unable to fully control her desire to commit sins. She most probably would be deduced as psychologically unbalanced to the psychologists, with her irrational and unique acts.

As for Raymond, he was gone for a business trip and for it, Leila felt a little relieved as she could hang out with Ron and not keep Raymond entertained. Raymond was a good man but he could not satisfy her desire for more excitement. Ron was a policeman, and Leila truly understood her position as a thief; the fact that Ron and she were such opposing forces made Leila tingle with thrill. She had been playing the game of hide-and-seek for a period of time and now it was the game of seek-and-catch.

“Leila, Leila, you are really mad. Let’s hope he will fall in love with you and he cannot bear to put you in jail in the end! This is so fun!” Leila chuckled as she stepped out in her black high heels, with her hair neatly let down. She was wearing a strapless baby blue dress which perfectly outlined her slender waist and legs.

-

Ron was getting ready for his lunch date with Leila as well.

However, his feelings were a contrast to Leila’s anticipation. He was dreading it, though he was the one who initiated the lunch date. He wanted to meet her and talk to her in person again. He missed her.

The strong urge to meet Leila that Ron had, terrified him.

He had stopped believing in love after her death. He was the one who caused her death.

Ron shut his eyes and allowed his mind to roam. They were a bunch of wild teenagers then. He was deeply in love with her, and she was madly in love with him. Together with other friends, they often partied late at nights, breaking the laws by drinking beer despite their young ages.

One night, that particular night, things went wrong. One of them had suggested to try something more exhilarating. All of them agreed as none wanted to be lose face.

They experimented with drugs that night. The whole party at the house was berserk – they drank, they swallowed the white pills and felt really high. With their heads light in the air, all of them pretended to be different extraordinary characters. Ron lost his mind as well.

He had kissed another girl in front of her. She was so angry that she ran up and slammed the door. If only he knew what would happen next, he would never …

The piercing dull sound of the car horn blasted and Ron was pulled back to the reality.

He drove to the cafe which was named Luck. Leila was supposed to meet him there.

“Ron Ng, be calm.” That was all Ron told himself.

-

Raymond went to Korea for a holiday. He needed a break.

The past was haunting him. He needed to leave Desiderata to avoid seeing Leila, to be reminded that he had loved someone so deeply but yet he never got her. He even witnessed her corpse. He lost her.

Leila had found her way into his heart and terror seized him. He thought he could move on but he realised the truth of his futile efforts. He would never forget her who was dead.

“It was totally his fault.” That was Raymond’s conclusion of his past memories as he proceeded on to buy some souvenirs. He was here on a holiday, he reminded himself.

-

Myolie bit her sandwich once more as she delved into deep thoughts.

Ron was behaving in a weird manner these days. He seldom laughed at the silly mistakes of his subordinates nor gave them looks when they called her “Lady Boss”. He sometimes even just walked passed her without noticing her.

“What’s wrong with him?” Myolie wondered. She had loved Ron. In fact, she knew a little about his past as his past was what drove him to become a police officer.

“Ron, when can you open your heart again?”

-

Little did Myolie know, Ron’s heart had been slightly ajar when Leila appeared in his life.

Leila and Ron sat facing each other.

“Let me try that!” Leila raised her fork and plunged it into Ron’s steak. She then chewed the small piece of steak and raised her thumb up.

Ron was amused by her delight in enjoying such simple pleasures such as food. Though Ron was a superb police officer, he was not good at observing people. Leila was actually trying her best to look adorable in front of Ron, not to make him fall in love with her, but to present an innocent and healthy image of herself.

“You can have it if you want. So when are you free? Tonight? I can be your client today. Let’s have a longer talk.” Ron offered. He had felt something tugging at his heartstrings when he saw Leila eating his steak. He also wanted to confirm his suspicions about Leila; he truly hoped Leila would not be the thief.

Leila nodded her head in agreement as she gave Ron a small smile. She reached over for her drink, contemplating what her next steps.

With a friendship established between a thief and a police officer who was determined to catch the thief, Leila was planning and plotting to have more fun. Ron only knew he wanted to know Leila better, his emotions had clouded his rational mind, temporarily.

Expect the unexpected.
