The Puzzle [COMPLETED]

Chapter 1

/Knock Knock/

Donghae was standing with the rest of his school's student council. They had been saving up money to purchase presents for orphans.

A little old lady rushed to the door and swung it open. The lady was wearing a nun's outfit and had rosemary beads in her hand. "Hello?" The nun asked.

"We are Jefferson High School student council. I'm Donghae. We spoke earlier on the phone about delivering presents to the orphans here." Donghae smiled. He had perfectly straight white teeth.

"Oh yes. Bless your hearts for coming on a day like this." The nun welcomed them in the orphanage.

"No worries. We needed to get these presents delivered before Christmas Eve." Donghae said. He scanned the long hallway. There were a line of doors on each side of the hallway.

The nun went and opened all the doors and told the children to go to the dining area. A few children looked out and saw Donghae and the other student council members smiling at them. The council members all had presents wrapped in bright, vibrant Christmas colors.

"Here, follow me into the dining room and we will hand out the gifts. Thank you so much again for doing this. These kids usually don't get anything on Christmas." The nun scurried into a big room. There was a table big enough for ten in the center of the room. It looked like it could collapse at any moment. Around the table were mix matched stools, chairs, and mini ladders. They were used as chairs.

"Here you can put the presents on the table." The nun smiled. Donghae and the rest of the council members gently placed the presents on the wobbly table.

When they turned around they saw kids of all ages standing at the doorway of the dining room. Their faces were filled with joy and excitement.

"Hello! My name is Donghae! I am the president of the Jefferson High School student council. We have presents for you. So, when I call your name how about you come up and get your present!" Donghae smiled and picked up a present wrapped in green and red stripped paper. There was a big green and red bow planted on it. Next to the bow was an card. The card read: "To: Elizabeth From: The Jefferson High School Student Council"

"Elizabeth." Donghae called out. A little girl with blond hair styled in pig tails ran forward. She had a little ripped torn out doll in her hand. The doll was missing an eye and the other eye was a button. Donghae smiled and handed her the present. He knew what was in there. A doll. And he knew she would be so very happy to get a new dolly.

Another member from the student council picked up a present and called someone's name. "Micheal." A little boy walked forward and took the present and thanked them.

The student council members continued calling out names until the got to the last present. They looked around and saw everyone had a present. Donghae picked it up and called out the name. "Eunhyuk?" Donghae scanned the room. No one came forward.

"Oh, Eunhyuk is probably outside. I will take it to him." The nun smiled and went to take the present from Donghae.

Donghae shook his head. "No, its fine. I will take it to him." Donghae smiled and left the room and walked down the hallway until he reached the door. He noticed some staircases. There was someone sitting on the staircases. He had a Jefferson High School uniform on.

"Are you Eunhyuk?" Donghae smiled and walked up the staircases and stopped a step away from Eunhyuk.

Eunhyuk looked away. "I don't need that. I have gone 13 years without ever getting a single Christmas present. I think I can manage not getting one this year." Eunhyuk got up and started walking up the staircases.

Donghae's smile disappeared. He was about to turn around and leave. But he remembered something his father always told him. "Always accomplish what you set out to do." So Donghae was determined to give this present to Eunhyuk.

"Eunhyuk!" Donghae ran up the steps after Eunhyuk. Donghae got to the last step and looked around. He was in the attic of the small house that was called an orphanage. It was a small cramped room with a small bed in the corner. Eunhyuk was sitting at the circular window next to his bed.

Eunhyuk looked at Donghae with disgust. Why did he follow me? "I don't need it. Give it to someone else."

Donghae walked to Eunhyuk and sat down next to him. "It says 'To: Eunhyuk' I don't know any other Eunhyuk."

"Scratch the name off." Eunhyuk said. "And don't sit so close to me! Geez, you gay?" Eunhyuk scootched away from Donghae.

"Heh heh its not that easy. And no, no I'm not. I have a girlfriend." Donghae laughed, weakly.

"Yeah, I know. I've seen you two all the time at lunch." Eunhyuk said.

"So you do go to Jefferson." Donghae nodded.

"Yeah." Eunhyuk replied.

Donghae and Eunhyuk sat there for awhile. In silence. It was awkward, but pleasing. "You aren't going to leave are you?" Eunhyuk finally asked.

"Nope." Donghae smiled. "Not until you open this. You don't need to keep it. Just open it and pretend to like it for awhile."

Eunhyuk let out a big sigh and took the present. It was wrapped in the same red and green striped wrapping paper. There was a big red ribbon tied around it. Eunhyuk pulled the ribbon off and placed it next to himself. Then he shook the box slightly. It made a rattling noise. He knew that sound. He slid his fingers on the wrapping paper and tore if off and balled it up. He put it next to the ribbon.

"A puzzle?" Eunhyuk asked. He looked at the puzzle. It looked to be a Fourth of July or New Years Eve puzzle. There were bright fireworks exploding in the air and what looked to be an ocean or lake reflecting the fireworks.

"Yeah, well, we didn't know what to get you. So..." Donghae started but Eunhyuk cut him off.

Eunhyuk shoot his head and smiled wide. His face was lit up in enjoyment. "No, its fine. I actually love jigsaw puzzles."

Donghae smiled. He was about to say something but his phone started to ring. He reached in his school coat and took out a nice black, shiny phone and slid it open and placed in at his ear. "Donghae." He simply said. He waited for the person to reply. "Yeah, go without me." He replied to the person. "I'll take the train." He waited for the response. "Yeah, I'm sure its fine." Waited. "Alright. Yeah. Bye. Love you too." Donghae slid the phone shut and put it back in his navy blue school coat.

"Wanna put that puzzle together?" Donghae smiled at Eunhyuk.

Eunhyuk looked up, he looked surprised. "Uhm, sure." He smiled and stared at Donghae. Donghae had the perfect smile. With the perfect teeth. Perfect hair. Perfect bone structure. Perfect nose. Perfect chin. Perfect beautiful eyes. Perfect beautiful face. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Eunhyuk felt his heart beat faster and his breathing became heavier. Butterflies started to swarm in his stomach.

Donghae moved in front of Eunhyuk and took the puzzle from Eunhyuk. "I used to puzzles all the time as a kid. I think its been a few years since I've put on together." Donghae smiled at Eunhyuk and poured the puzzle pieces out onto the floor.

Eunhyuk continued to stare at Donghae. 'He is really cute.' Thought to himself. 'Wait. What? No. He is a boy. This isn't right. I shouldn't think he is cute!'

"Eunhyuk, are you okay?" Donghae waved his hand in front of Eunhyuk.

Eunhyuk blinked rapidly and quickly shook his head. "Yeah, I'm fine." He blushed.

"So, what grade are you in?" Donghae asked as he picked through the puzzle pieces; looking for edge pieces.

"I'm a junior." Eunhyuk replied. He was sorting through the pieces. Putting edge pieces on the left and inside pieces on the right.

"Oh. Yeah, I'm a senior. You probably know that, though." Donghae said.

"Yeah..." Eunhyuk replied.

When they were done sorting out all the pieces they started to piece them together. They didn't say anything for awhile. Eunhyuk would occasionally look up at Donghae. He looked so wrapped up in the puzzle.

"So, why did you do this?" Eunhyuk asked.

"Why did I stay? I wanted to put this puzzle together with you." Donghae smiled at Eunhyuk.

Eunhyuk felt his face turn red. He looked down, hiding his flushed face. "Oh. Thank you." Eunhyuk said sincerely.

Donghae smiled and went back the puzzle. 'He is pretty cute.' Donghae thought. 'He has really cute hair. And his eyes are really pretty. And he has a nicely shaped body. And..." Donghae shook his head and realized what he was thinking. 'No. This is wrong. Im not gay. I have a girlfriend. A hott girlfriend. Yeah. I shouldn't be thinking about a boy like that. No.' Donghae looked at Eunhyuk. Eunhyuk was putting a piece in in the puzzle. He smiled wide and congratulated himself. 'Gosh, he is really something.' Donghae thought.

"So, do you wanna talk about anything?" Eunhyuk asked after awhile of silence.

"Uhm. I don't know. Like what?" Donghae asked.

"What do you like to do?" Eunhyuk asked as he put some pieces into the puzzle.

"I like reading. And hanging out with my friends and my girlfriend, Sophia." Donghae replied. He put a few more pieces in the puzzle. "What about you?"

"There isn't much I can do. I like reading too. And I like puzzles. And traveling. I love traveling."

"Where have you traveled to?"

"Well, I haven't ever left Detroit, but one day I would like to. As for now I just travel the city." Eunhyuk sighed.

"Oh. That's cool." Donghae said as he reached for a puzzle piece. Eunhyuk was reaching for the same piece. They hands collided. They both looked up at each other. Their eyes were fixed on each other's. Their hands were still touching.

Eunhyuk pulled his hand back and looked down. His face was bright red. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay." Donghae replied as he put the puzzle piece in it's spot.

There were only a few pieces left to put in the puzzle. "Wow. We're almost done with the puzzle." Donghae said as he looked at the puzzle.

"We are?" Eunhyuk looked at the puzzle. It was close to 95% completed. "Oh we are. Wow. I didn't even notice..."

Donghae and Eunhyuk put the remaining pieces in the puzzle. They looked down at the puzzle. Donghae, who saw the puzzle upside down got up and sat next to Eunhyuk. He looked at the puzzle. It was pretty awesome looking.

Eunhyuk felt his heart race. Donghae was just a few millimeters from him. Eunhyuk could feel the warmth from his body.

Donghae reached in his pocket and pulled out his phone. He hit a button on the side and the LCD screen lit up. 7:27. "Oh man! I've been here for hours!! I should be getting home! Thanks for letting me do this puzzle with you, Eunhyuk."

Eunhyuk and Donghae stood up and walked out of Eunhyuk's room and down the stairs. "Are you taking the train home?" Eunhyuk asked.

"Yeah. Why?" Donghae asked as he slid on his navy blue and yellow scarf.

"Want me to walk you to the train station? Its pretty dangerous to walk alone in this part of town." Eunhyuk made up a lame excuse to walk with Donghae. It was true it was dangerous to walk alone in this part of town, if you were an old lady or a little kid. But not if you were a guy like Donghae.

"Uhm sure." Donghae smiled as he walked out of the small house.

Eunhyuk smiled and walked out into the cold winter night. He shivered a little. He didn't own a school coat. It wasn't mandatory to purchase one.

They started walking and when they were about half a mile from the house Eunhyuk started to shiver noticeably. "Are you cold?" Donghae asked.

Eunhyuk nodded. "Im fine, though. I'm use to the cold."

Donghae pulled his school coat and held it out to Eunhyuk. "Here. Take it." Eunhyuk shook his head. "Take it. I'm a very persistent person. I'm not going to start walking again until you take this coat." Donghae laughed a little bit.

Eunhyuk gave in and took the coat and slipped it on. It was really warm and soft. And it smelled so good. "Thanks." Eunhyuk smiled and continued walking with Donghae.

"So, what do your parents do for a living?" Eunhyuk asked Donghae.

"Well, my dad is a politician. And my step mom is a banker."

"What about your real mom?" Eunhyuk asked.

"She died when I was two." Donghae looked down at the ground he walked upon.

"Oh, I'm sorry." Eunhyuk said. "I know how you feel though. Both my parents abandoned me when I was 6. They told me that the didn't want me anymore. That I was too much trouble for them. They told me to leave and find a new home." Eunhyuk confessed. He felt tears in his eyes.

"Eunhyuk," Donghae said sincerely, "I'm so sorry."

"Its fine. They treated me like a dog. I only ate when I was at school. I slept in a closet. I had one pair of clothes and I had my teachers clean them for me. They would abuse me all the time. My dad was an angry drunk and took it out on me. I was better off not with them anyways." Eunhyuk stopped walking and started crying. He never talked to anyone about his childhood and his time with his parents. Not even social workers.

Donghae stopped and turned around at and stared at Eunhyuk. "Eunhyuk," Donghae walked over to him and wrapped his arms around him. Eunhyuk buried his head in Donghae's chest.

"Donghae," Eunhyuk looked up and Donghae. Donghae was staring down at him.

"Eunhyuk," Donghae whispered. Donghae closed his eyes and leaned his face closer to Eunhyuk until their lips touched. Eunhyuk closed his eyes and kissed Donghae back.
