Chapter 13

Eunhyuk squeezed the arms of this chair. He didn't think he had heard correct. Did Donghae really...propose to Sophia? He couldn't possibly...no...he, he did.

Everyone at the table gasped. This was a truly unexpected turn of events. "Ah! My boy! Popping the question to his love! Wonderful!" The mayor cheered.

Everyone looked at Sophia. She was sitting in her chair, equally surprised as everyone else. She had no idea her beloved boyfriend would ask this question any time soon. She looked at all the faces of everyone at the table. She paused at Eunhyuk. His eyes were fixed on Donghae. Sophia swallowed hard and forced a smile. She turned back to Donghae. "Donghae, I love you, but I need to think this over."

Donghae thought he was imagining Sophia's words. "Pardon me?" He got off his knee and stood towering over her.

"Donghae, I," She nervously laughed, "I think this is just to sudden. I need time to sleep on it." She forced another smile.

Donghae pulled up his chair and sat down. He expected everyone to be surprised, and he expected Sophia would accept the proposal. He was glad, though, she didn't accept right away. "Oh, well, I fully understand. I love you too." He said and quickly glanced up at Eunhyuk.

Eunhyuk tore his eyes away from Donghae and at Kim. "Wow, what a big surprise, huh?" Kim asked.

"Yeah, really big..." Eunhyuk looked back at Donghae. His attention was now at Sophia. Eunhyuk sighed and looked at his souffle. There was no way he could fully enjoy it now.

"Well no matter what your answer is," Veronica started, "you are always part of out family."

"How about a toast?" The mayor picked up his whine glass. Everyone else picked up their glasses. "A toast to our family. Our family that has grown today. With the addition of Eunhyuk and Sophia!" Everyone clinked their glasses together. "Now, let us eat the souffle!"

Everyone dug into their souffle. Eunhyuk picked up the small fork beside his plate and picked a small piece off. He slowly put it in his mouth and let the flavour overtake his mouth. It was so smooth and delicious. But he couldn't enjoy it. Not after what Donghae had done. Eunhyuk pouted and quickly finished the souffle.

"Eunhyuk, would you like me to drive you home?" Kim asked after everyone had gotten up from the table.

"Yes, please and thank you." Eunhyuk said.

Kim and Eunhyuk bid everyone a goodnight and went for the door. Donghae was standing outside with Sophia. When Eunhyuk and Kim came outside together Donghae quickly ran back inside. Sophia stood awkwardly in the cold night. Her makeup looked to be running.

"Sophia, are you alright? Have you been crying?" Kim rushed to Sophia's side and comforted her.

Sophia nodded. "Yes, just tears of joy..." She forced a smile. "I have to go, excuse me." She pulled away from Kim's arms and walked back to the house. She stopped at Eunhyuk and gave him a quick look before finally retreating back inside.

"Stay here, I'll get the car." Kim told Eunhyuk and disappeared into the night.

"Eunhyuk, do you think Donghae really loves Sophia?" Kim asked after a short while of driving in silence.

Eunhyuk froze. He wanted to say he wished he didn't. He wanted to say he wished Donghae loved him. But he couldn't. He couldn't tell Kim. And he knew it was wrong to wish that. "I think cares about her a lot and I think Sophia loved him very much."

Kim pondered for a moment. "Hmmm," She pursed her lips, "it's none of my business, but when he asked her to marry him, he looked, frightful." Kim turned to Eunhyuk, "Don't you think?"

Eunhyuk shrugged and laughed nervously. "He was probably worried she would say 'No.'"

"Hmmm," Kim fell silent again and thought about Donghae's manner when he asked Sophia for her hand in marriage. "Do you want them to marry Eunhyuk?"

Eunhyuk's face tensed up. He swallowed hard and forced a small chuckle. "I want them both to be happy." Eunhyuk bit his bottom lip. His eyes started to sting and this throat got tight.

"Hmmm," Kim repeated, but said no more. The two drove in silence until they reached Eunhyuk's orphanage. "About the Governor's Ball, its a costume masquerade. I already have our costumes picked out, if that's okay. I'll pick you up the day after tomorrow to get your's fitted."

Eunhyuk stepped out of the car. "Yeah, that's fine. See you then. Bye." Eunhyuk waved bye as he walked up to his orphanage.

Eunhyuk stared up at the ceiling of his small attic room. He had spent 10 years living in this room. It was his home. He didn't know how he'd be able to leave in it next Monday.

'Donghae, I love you, but I need to think this over.' Sophia's words replayed in Eunhyuk's mind. He didn't think he could feel happy and crushed at the same time. But Sophia's words meant hope. Hope that Eunhyuk could get Donghae back.

Eunhyuk rolled over on this side. He looked down at the puzzle on the floor beside his bed. The moonlight shone in from this small window and illuminated the fireworks. An array of blues, reds, whites exploded in the puzzle.

"Stupid puzzle. Its all your fault." Eunhyuk said aloud. He sat up on his bed and continued to stare down at the puzzle that started it all. He slid off his bed and sat next to the puzzle. He ran his fingers across the smooth pieces. He closed his eyes and reminisced about that first day he spent with Donghae. He sighed loudly and opened his eyes. He looked out his window and stared at the large moon.

--

Donghae paced back and fourth in his room. When he proposed to Sophia something had overcome him. A feeling of rage, jealously, love, and depression. He half expected Sophia to say 'Yes' on the spot. So when she told him she were to sleep on it, he was authentically surprised.

Donghae stopped at the unfinished puzzle at the foot of his bed. He had bought the puzzle the day he and Eunhyuk had met. The stand he purchased it from was right next to the subway station. He glanced at it first and thought nothing of it. Then he saw that world monuments puzzle. He knew Eunhyuk would love it.

Donghae bent down and started to put a few pieces together. "No..." He sighed and stood back up. "I can't finish it without him..." Donghae stepped over the puzzle and to his window. He peered out at the full moon.
