A strange sensation of paranoia overwhelmed Eunhyuk. He turned around and stared at the familiar looking car. He strained his eyes to see who the driver of the car was. He failed to see the car's inhabitants through the tinted windows.
"Eunhyuk are you okay? Do you know those people?" Kim moved herself so she could meet Eunhyuk's eyes.
Eunhyuk focused in on Kim and shook his head. "No, I don't think so." Eunhyuk looked back at the car and stared at the driver's side window. He felt a strange connection with the car he couldn't explain.
"Oh, well, okay. Shall we go?" Kim started walking again, dragging Eunhyuk with her.
Eunhyuk tore his eyes off the car and started walking alongside Kim again. His mind set on the car.
-
Donghae stared at Eunhyuk. He knew Eunhyuk couldn't see him through the tinted windows and at this distance. But somehow, he knew Eunhyuk was staring right at him.
"I'm sorry Donghae. But don't worry. Tonight Eunhyuk will remember he loves you and everything will end happily ever after!" Sophia cheered and tried to distract Donghae from the picture before them.
Donghae tore his eyes of Eunhyuk and looked at Sophia. She was giving him a reassuring smile. Donghae smiled and found security in her words. "Thank you again Sophia."
---
"Hurry, put your mask on!" Sophia barked and forcefully pulled Donghae's ninja mask over his head.
"Ouch you scratched my eye!" Donghae whined and straightened out the mask so he could see properly.
"Oh stop whining and get inside. I'll stay outside and wait for Eunhyuk to show up. When he does, I'll call you and tell you what he is wearing." Sophia said and pulled on her own yellow Power Ranger mask.
"Thank you again, Sophia. I don't know what I would do without you." Donghae said and gave Sophia a big hug.
"Yeah yeah I got that the last hundred times you thanked me." Sophia laughed and pulled out of the hug. "Now, go!" She pushed her ex boyfriend into the hall the Governor's Ball was held at.
Sophia hurried off to her spot by the ushers and waited for more guests to come and give their names.
-
"Do you have your mask?" Kim asked Eunhyuk when they pulled up to the town hall.
Eunhyuk reached behind his seat and snatched up the purple, feathery mask and strapped it on. "Yep."
"Kay, we gotta go around back so I can bring the mayor his costume." Kim said as she got of the car. Eunhyuk got out with her and waited beside the car as she sifted through the messy trunk. "We have to take the back entrance. Okay?" Kim asked.
"Yeah, no problem." Eunhyuk said.
"Okay, lets go." Kim slammed her trunk shut, revealing a pile of leopard print cloth in her hand. Eunhyuk laughed and pointed at the clothes. "He's going as a caveman." She laughed along with Eunhyuk.
-
Donghae walked into the large hall and felt incredibly awkward. He decided against mingling or dancing like the other guests were doing. Instead he went to a corner hidden from the light. With his black ninja costume, no one would even know he was there.
He pulled out his phone and checked for any messages from Sophia. None.
He sighed. "I hope this works..." He scanned the room, searching for Eunhyuk, though he knew it was pointless. Everyone were wearing costumes and masks, plus the lights were turned down low. There was no way he could spot Eunhyuk in this crowd of people.
-
"If you head down that hall right there and turn right the doors to the hall will be right in front of you. Go ahead in, I'll meat you in there." Kim smiled at Eunhyuk.
Eunhyuk nodded and followed the directions until he was at the double doors leading in the hall. He pushed them open slightly. The bright light leaked into the dark room. Eunhyuk quickly squeezed into the hall while letting in as little light as he could.
He wandered the large room. There were tacky Christmas and other winter holiday decorations everywhere. He looked up and saw chandeliers barely glowing with green, silver, red, and blue tinsel spread around them.
Eunhyuk wandered towards the wall and leaned up against it. "What are you supposed to be?" A muffled voice from the darkness asked. He could barely hear the voice over the music playing.
Eunhyuk looked around and saw no one. "Hello?" He called out. The voice emerged from the shadows and revealed itself. Eunhyuk jumped back when the ninja came out.
"Did I scare you?" Donghae asked.
Eunhyuk laughed. "No, I was startled is all. You are a good ninja."
Donghae laughed. He studied Eunhyuk's costume. "Thanks. You are a good..." Donghae trailed off and waited for Eunhyuk to fill in the blanks.
"You know, I don't really know what I am." Eunhyuk laughed. "My girlfriend wanted to go all 18th century, and this is the only thing they had." Eunhyuk shrugged and studied his own costume.
"Oh. Hah. Not bad...better than a ninja I guess. I don't even know why I'm wearing this costume..." Donghae mumbled.
"Oh man, no way, this costume is itchy and tight in all the wrong places." Eunhyuk joked.
Donghae laughed and walked a little closed to Eunhyuk. Both boys were unaware of the other one's identity.
"So, where's your girlfriend?" Donghae asked the 18th century gentleman next to him.
"Uh somewhere around here." Eunhyuk scanned the room looking for Kim in her big puffy dress. "What about you? Where's your date?"
"Not here yet...I think...I have someone waiting outside for..." Donghae hesitated, "...my date." He said without revealing the gender of his date.
"Oh. Is she in a ninja costume as well?" Eunhyuk asked.
"No, I don't think so. I'm not sure, really. It's kind of a blind date." Donghae explained.
"Sounds interesting. How do you know when she gets here?" Eunhyuk asked.
"Well my friend is outside waiting by the ushers and listening in on who is checking in. When my date comes and gives...their name my friend will call me and tell me what...my date looks like." Donghae explained.
"Oh. What's her name?" Eunhyuk asked.
Donghae froze. "Uh Ee--Ee--" Donghae stuttered. "Esther." Donghae lied.
"Esther?" Eunhyuk asked with disbelief.
"Yeah...it's uh....Polish..." Donghae lied again.
"Oh...sounds...exotic..." Eunhyuk said with a laugh.
Donghae laughed too. He felt oddly comfortable with this guy. "I'm Do-" Donghae stared, but his phone started to ring. "Hold on, sec..." Donghae pulled out his phone and stepped away from Eunhyuk. "Hello? Sophia? Is he here?" Donghae asked. He waited for Sophia's reply. "What?" He sighed. "Alright...thank you for waiting." Donghae waited. "You don't have to-" Donghae started. "If you insist...you know I can stand out there too..." Donghae waited. "If you insist. Thank you so much Sophia." Donghae closed his phone and slid it back in his costume's pocket.
He walked back over to Eunhyuk. "That was my friend outside. My date hasn't shown up yet." Donghae said glumly.
"Oh I'm sorry man. She'll show up sooner or later." Eunhyuk reassured Donghae.
"Yeah, I hope so. I gotta tell 'em something important..." Donghae mumbled.
"What was that?" Eunhyuk asked.
"Oh nothing." Donghae replied.
"Okay..." Eunhyuk said. He had a strange feeling come over him. It was the same feeling he got when he looked at that puzzle. It was the same feeling he got whenever he was with Donghae.
"I uh didn't catch your name..." Donghae asked.
"Oh I'm Eu-" Eunhyuk started to say, but his words were drown out by the someone else's voice.
"There you are!" Kim's loud voice called out. She rushed over to Eunhyuk and grabbed him by his hand. "Come on, I told the DJ to play my favorite song and I need to dance with you."
Eunhyuk looked back at his ninja friend. "Hey gotta go dance, hope you find your date soon!"
Donghae waved bye to him and went back to sulking in his corner. "I sure hope so..." Donghae sighed.
