Donghae didn't get a wink of sleep. His mind still focused on Eunhyuk. At about 7 he left his room to the kitchen. He fixed himself a coup of coffee and sat at the empty dining table.
He took a sip of the steaming coffee and let out a sigh.
He didn't know if it was due to lack of sleep or just a broken heart, but hallucinations of his childhood started to play out in front of him.
An image of his late mother sat down at the table and smiled at Donghae. His father walked in a and sat down across from his mother on the end of the table and smiles.
Donghae's mother picked up the paper and started to read the fashion section of paper. His father reads the business section.
Donghae looks to his left and sees a small toddle stumble his way into the kitchen. Donghae's father gets up and scoops the baby into a large hug. Donghae can read his father's lips. "Oh look at my big son!"
Mother smiles warmly at Donghae.
"Mom!" Donghae mouths.
Mother gets up and walks to the toddler and his father.
"My baby! Oh my baby Donghae!" Donghae can almost he the voice.
It was distant.
It was alien.
It was fake.
"Oh my baby!" The bleached blond woman shrieked as she ran into the room. The visions of Donghae's childhood started to disappear like smoke.
His mother faded away the slowest, smiling at Donghae. Donghae wanted to scream "Don't go!" but his mouth wouldn't open.
"Oh Donghae! You would have loved Vancouver! We went skiing and stayed in a log cabin! Oh it was beautiful!" The woman grabbed hold of Donghae. Her hair fell over his face.
He flinched at her touch. The strong scent of alcohol was present on her breath, even this early in the morning. The scent burned his eyes.
His father stepped into the kitchen and gave Donghae a disgusted look. "Oh, hello Donghae. You are still in your pajamas? That's something a slacker would do. You do not want to become a slacker do you, Donghae?" His father asked.
Donghae looks up at his father. Donghae gives him an apathetic look, but his eyes tell a different story. "No," Donghae shakes his head, a little frightened of his father.
"No?" His father asked.
"No sir." Donghae corrected himself.
"Good." His father straightens out his tie. "Your mother..."
"She is not my mother." Donghae mumbles to himself.
"...and I are going to meet with my campaign manager for breakfast. We'll be talking about my future plans for office. I am going to announce I will be running for governor Saturday night at the holiday ball. I want you to be there, bring Sophia." His father finished what he was saying and left the room.
Donghae's step mother gives Donghae a big kiss on the cheek and chases after her husband. Donghae quickly wiped it away with disgust.
Eunhyuk stepped into the kitchen after he saw the coast was clear. He didn't know how Donghae's father would react to a strange boy in his house, wearing his sons clothes.
Donghae looked down at the mahogany table. He didn't see Eunhyuk enter the room.
Eunhyuk quietly walked over to Donghae pulled the seat next to him out and sat down. He entangled his arm with Donghae's and rested his head on Donghae's shoulder.
"Oh, Eunhyuk," Donghae looked at Eunhyuk.
"I'm sorry, Donghae." Eunhyuk said without looking at Donghae.
"Sorry? For what?" Donghae half laughed.
Eunhyuk shook his head. "I-I was awake last night."
"Awake?" Donghae asked. "When?" He felt his heart drop. He knew when Eunhyuk was talking about.
"Donghae, I'm sorry." Eunhyuk repeated himself.
"I don't understand. I should be the one apolo-"
"I know you like me." Eunhyuk interrupted Donghae. "And I'm sorry. I want to like you to, but I can't." Eunhyuk let go of Donghae and got up to leave the room. "I'm sorry." He finished and left the room and then the house.
