The phone rang shrilly in Gui Gui’s small but comfortable house as a lady carrying a young toddler bustled to the answer the phone.
“Hello?” the lady asked as the nurse replied “Yes. Hello. May I speak with Gui Gui’s family?”
The lady said “Hi. I am Gui Gui’s closest family member. How may I help you?”
The nurse went on to describe Gui Gui’s poor and complicated condition, as the lady was struck dumb, almost dropping the squirming two year old in her arms.
Gently she placed the toddler down on the thick nicely carpeted floor with a toy as she thanked the nurse and hung up.
A lonely tear sadly glided down her cheek.
Looking at the little boy, she went in search for a luggage.
With the small carry-on handbag lying gracefully opened in the corner of the living room, she went from room to room, gathering items that will be essential for her and the young boy’s traveling and her mistress’s stay in the hospital.
After all the things that will be needed was gathered and placed neatly into the carry-on bag, the lady took the little boy and headed to the airport where she got tickets for their flight.
The plane landed and the lady scurried out with the toddler into a taxi to her mistress.
The lady and boy were in the hospital walking around in circles hand-in-hand as they looked for Gui Gui, when the toddler burst out into tears, crying tearfully for his mommy.
“Mommy! Mommy!” the tearful cry echoed throughout the hospital’s hallways as Wang Zi stood rooted, waiting for
Gui Gui to be wheeled out or at the very least,… the doctor.
Wang Zi only moved from his spot when the light of the emergency room suddenly blinked off.
At this time the lady and the cute toddler was just rounding the corner.
The toddler spotted Wang Zi and immediately his cries stopped with the last of his tears rolling off his small round cheeks.
In joy the boy disentangled his little hand from the lady and ran up to Wang Zi, flinging his short little arms around Wang Zi’s legs, hugging them as he shrieked out loudly in happiness “Daddy! Daddy!”.
The kid’s screaming of “Daddy! Daddy?” can be heard happily echoing loudly throughout all the hallways of the hospital.
Looking down, Wang Zi was extremely surprise to find himself, face to face with a face so like his own that they could have been identical, if it wasn’t for one with full of youth and the other one etched in wrinkly lines.
The doctors were coming out and walking towards them, so Wang Zi didn’t pay much attention to the kid and pushed him aside as he rushed to meet the doctor halfway, asking anxiously “How is she? How is she?”.
His words couldn't be heard over the lady's yells of "Hey! You can't do that to the little boy!"
Wang Zi’s questioning didn't interrupt the team of doctors conversation and they weren’t going stop to answer him but to raise up a hand to silence him and continue on with their talk as if nothing has happened, but the lady's yells broke the head doctor's concentration.
All talk seized to an end as all the other doctors left, except for the head doctor.
Turned to face Wang Zi, the head doctor barely maintained his calm as he introduced himself “I am Doctor Wu, the head doctor in there just now. Your wife had just fell and hit her head, causing a trauma.”
Hearing the word ‘trauma’ caused Wang Zi’s heart to clench in a long suffocating grasp.
The expression on Wang Zi’s shocked and scared face was enough to make the doctor rethink his next move.
After a series of quick debates in his mind, the doctor decided to go on with the plan he had in mind.
With the plan in mind, the doctor continued on saying “Your wife may or may not live and even though if she can make it, she may still suffer through a difficult time of amnesia.”
Wang Zi literally fell and teared up at those words, while the doctor secretly shared a smile with himself.
