Chapter 1

The Incident

Cold laughter rang in my ears. The screams of terror seemed to amplify by the minute. The struggle that I put up was useless against the cold hard hands that gripped me. I felt short breaths on my ears and crude sounds made by the aggressor. I screamed but that did not stop him. He merely laughed and continued to whisper crude suggestions into my ear while his untamed hand ran freely across my body. The night was silent and cold. I was all alone and vulnerable. His hands made swift movements as if this was normal to him. Soon, my blouse was torn in several places but still keeping me protected as if the blouse itself was putting up a fight. He had dirtied my body and his hands began to undo my pants when I suddenly woke up, panting.

“He’s back.” I whispered hoarsely drenched in cold sweat.

The morning never seemed so beautiful before. Birds were chirping and the flowers were in full bloom. The white petals of the jasmine fell gracefully to the ground as the wind blew. I opened my window and took a deep breath. I opened the door and closed it behind me. I started jogging down the path to the music of Linkin Park’s ‘Faint’. The fast paced song set a certain speed for me and it’s like my body was responding to the music, jogging at a fast pace. I stopped after two kilometres and stood there panting. It was a weekend and here I was, early in the morning, jogging. I smiled and started jogging again.

I finally reached the gym. I took a rest and sat at the benches, looking at a few buff looking guys working out. Some of them smiled at me and I looked away, disgusted by their actions. There were a few punching bags, dumb bells, treadmill and all the ordinary equipment you’ll find at a gym. I did some sit-ups as warming up before heading towards the punching bag. I got myself ready and began my routine. I did some basic punches and soon began to speed up my punches, sending the bag swinging. The dream replayed in my mind. I gritted my teeth and began punching the bag furiously, adding a kick here and there. I didn’t know how long I punched the bag but fatigue suddenly hit me like a train.

I staggered to the bench and took out my water bottle and drank in big gulps. The guys were eyeing me with raised eyebrows. They probably don’t get kickboxing girls every day in the gym. I took no heed and began my training again. I didn’t want that incident to happen again. It’s true that I wasn’t actually raped because I jabbed the aggressor’s eyes and ran but I didn’t want to ever be considered as the average vulnerable girl again. I decided to train myself up so that I could teach the thug if he ever dared to cross path with me again. Having lost my mood at the thought of the aggressor, I left the gym.

I opened the door to my house and walked in tiredly. I needed a boost of energy. I ate my energy bar and read the newspaper.

‘It’s a Saturday for god’s sake. Am I the only person not having any fun on a Saturday? Sheesh, better call Frost and see what she’s up to.’ I picked up her cell phone lazily and called Frost. The phone rang for quite a long time before I heard a grunt at the other end of the line.

“Rise and shine! For heaven’s sake, it’s eleven in the morning already and you’re still sleeping?” I exclaimed.

“I had a late night yesterday.” She mumbled.

“I’m bored off my socks here. Any good suggestion as to what to do today?” I asked as I walked to the kitchen and poured a glass of water.

“That’s because you have no social life. Right now, I’m feeling too pooped to do anything.” She yawned loudly.

“I don’t care. I’m coming over in another one hour. Get ready by then.” I said sternly.

“Get ready for what?” Frost said nonchalantly.

“Let’s go rock climbing at the mall.” I said enthusiastically.

“What? Rock climbing again? It’s like we just did that two days ago. Can’t we at least do something else?” she pleaded.

“What about swimming? Looks like a good day.” I said, hoping to do something that day.

“Swimming? We just went yesterday!” Frost said, exasperated.

“Why don’t you suggest something then, Ms. Picky?” I said sarcastically.

“Let’s go shopping then.” She suddenly sound excited.

“Shopping?” I had my doubts.

“Yeah, we could look out for cute guys on the way.” She suggested.

“That was what I was afraid of. Okay okay, shopping it is then. I’ll pick you up in another hour.” I said in a bored tone. Frost was forever shopping, be it for clothes or guys.

I took a bath and wore a white T-shirt with a pair of faded jeans. I ran my fingers through my short hair and I was out the door, climbed into my Beatles and drove off. I arrived at Frost’s place ten minutes earlier than expected and rang her doorbell. She opened the door still in her pyjamas, wearing a sleepy look on her face. I gasped.

“What are you still doing in your pyjamas? I thought we were going shopping?” I said, wide eyed.

“I felt tired and slept again after your call.” She hid a huge yawn.

“What did you do yesterday? You look wasted.” I strode in and closed the door.

“Was out partying with some guys till five this morning.” She scratched her head in a sleepy manner and trudged her way upstairs.

“Guys? Five in the morning?” I raised my eyebrows but it’s not like it has never happened before.

“Well, get a move on. I want to do something today instead of wasting my time away at home, still pondering over what I should do.” I pushed her to the bathroom and kicked her in.

When I didn’t get a respond from her, I was annoyed to find that she was actually sleeping while holding her toothbrush while the other, apparently squeezing toothpaste onto the toothbrush. Her head drooped to one side and soft snores could be heard. I shook my head and hit her head. Immediately, her head landed on the toothpaste that was on the toothbrush. That seemed to have woken her up because she looked around in a dazed state to find out who was the culprit that caused her to have toothpaste on her forehead.

“Quick, go bathe and get ready. I’ll be sitting on your bed and if you don’t come out in another half an hour, I’m going to barge in. You know I’m capable of it.” I said and sat on her bed.

“Okay okay. I’m coming. Quit whining. I can’t believe why I’m doing this for you. I usually don’t give a damn to people who wakes me up before I’m supposed to.” Frost said, still yawning.

“Because I’m the best friend you ever had and you can’t live without me. Trust me.” I said when Frost rolled her eyes.

“Whatever.” She said lazily and closed the bathroom door. I heard the sound of water gushing out and I assumed that she’s taking her bath and not just standing there, sleeping and letting the water flow.

I plopped down onto her bed and closed my eyes. I was quite tired physically but mentally, I’m still active. I just couldn’t sleep peacefully because my mind is constantly working. I had over exerted myself today and my body felt like it would break into pieces. I tried to shut off and get some sleep while Frost is bathing but the dream came back to haunt me. Recently, the dream came back more vividly. I wonder if it’s an omen. An omen signalling that something bad is about to happen. But I don’t believe in those things, what more fate. I snorted at the fact that people actually believed that there is something called fate. What a bunch of foolish people but little did I know, I’m about to get a taste of what fate is all about.
