Chapter 32

Fate

The incident with Karisu stayed clear in my mind. I haven’t been able to concentrate on anything else. Was it fate that made me meet all these wonderful people? Was it fate who also decides when I should leave them behind? Was fate that powerful to have rendered these people helpless over their own future? I’ve always had the impression that it is us that decide what will happen in future. What we do now affects the future yet here I am feeling that I’ve somehow lost control of my life.

“Hey, are you okay?” Won Bin’s face loomed into view.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I smiled.

“Are you sure? You’ve been sitting there doing nothing but stare into space.” He said, sitting down.

“I’m fine, don’t worry.”

“Well, I just got a call from Vanness and he wondered if we could all gather tonight at the usual place. You know, to hang out and do stuff. It’s been long since we’ve met up.” He said.

“Yeah, sure. Count me in.” I answered, trying to look busy.

“Great. Call Alex too okay?” he said before leaving.

Alex. In the company of friends, do we act as lovers or just friends? How will Alex feel? How will the others feel about us being lovers? All of a sudden, I felt as if my head weighed a ton and there was a constant drumming in my head.

“Hi.” I said weakly into the mouthpiece.

“Hi, darling. You sound down.” Alex’s soothing voice came floating out of the receiver.

“Oh, it’s nothing. Just tired I guess. Well, in case you haven’t heard, Vanness wants us to meet up tonight and I’m wondering if you’re free to go.” I said.

“I’m free. How do you want us to go as?” he asked gently.

“I don’t know. What do you think?” I wasn’t in the mood to think anything.

“I don’t mind going just as friends if that is what you want.” Alex said.

“You know, you’re a great guy. You’re selfless and that’s hard to come by.” I smiled.

“Shucks, don’t praise me too much. I’m scared my head will grow too big for my body.” He laughed.

I chuckled softly. “See you at the usual place then, the place where we always hang out.”

“Okay, see you then.” He hung up.

The encounter with Karisu sapped away every ounce of strength in my body. I felt tired but I know that I must go and see all of them. I’ve got a feeling that I’m about to leave them soon. Will I ever meet them again? Will we meet again in the next life and be best of friends again? Will fate allow that? There is so much things that I’ve not seen, that I’ve not done. Will I be able to see Frost and Vanness really hit it off? Will I be able to see the progress in Cherian’s relationship with Won Bin? And then, there’s Alex.

As I got ready in a daze, I heard the faint sounds of Cherian getting ready and the sound of music blasting from her room. Everything was faint and far away. I shook my head fervently. No, not now. Give me some time, not now. The doorbell rang and I walked slowly to the door and opened it.

Alex scooped me up into his arms and gave me a kiss. “hi darling. I missed you.” He whispered huskily.

I smiled weakly. “Me too. Come in.”

“Who is it?” Cherian shouted from the bathroom.

“It’s Alex.” I replied and sat down on the couch.

“All ready?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’ve been ready for a long time. Cherian’s taking a long time in the bathroom, god knows what she’s doing in there.” I said.

Alex laughed. “She’s probably dressing up to the nines. There will be eligible bachelors around and it’s about time she got herself one anyway.”

“Maybe she already has someone in mind.” I laughed, thinking about Won Bin and Cherian.

“Too bad, you got to tell her I’m taken.” Alex winked and snuggled up against me.

“I’m sorry to burst your bubble dear but I’m probably the only girl who would take you. I’m sure Cherian has better taste than me.” I grinned.

“Hey! I am very much sought after you know!” he said.

“Yeah, whatever you say Alex.”

Karisu’s right. It’s too good to be true. Life is never this perfect. There’s always a catch.

“What are you thinking about?” Alex asked.

“Nothing.” I smiled.

“Well, shall we get going?” Alex asked.

“Yeah, I guess we should.” I said, getting up.

“Cherian, we’re leaving now. You either go there on your own or give Won Bin a call.” I shouted.

“What?! Can’t you wait for me?” Cherian’s head popped out of the bathroom.

“Hi Cherian.” Alex smiled.

“Hi Alex. Can’t you wait?” she pleaded.

“No, god knows how long you’re going to take. We’re leaving. Don’t be too late. Won Bin likes a girl who’s punctual.” I winked at Cherian and smiled.

Cherian blushed. “So? It’s not like I’m going to please Won Bin.”

“Whatever you say, Cherian. Bye!” I said and dragged Alex out of the door before Cherian could say anything else.

“Won Bin?” Alex raised his eyebrows.

“Yeah. I hope they hit it off. It’ll be good for both of them.” I said.

“And good for us too.” Alex wrapped his arms around my waist.

“yeah.” I said silently.

With Alex’s strong arms guiding me, I followed him in a daze. There was no words exchanged, just comfortable silence. As we walked hand in hand to the café, I decided that my relationship with Alex should be out in the open. We’re not doing anything wrong, we should hide anything. As we got closer to the café, Alex took his hand out of mine so that we could go in as friends but I grabbed his hand in mine. He looked at me in shock and I just smiled.

“Hi guys.” I said.

“Hi Caryn!” Vanness said and was about to say something else when he stopped short.

“Caryn?” Frost looked at our linked hands.

“Hi Frost, hi Vanness.” Alex said, smiling.

“Mind explaining what’s going on?” Frost asked.

“There’s nothing to explain. What you see is what happened. We’re a couple.” I said, looking at Alex.

Frost grabbed my arm and led me away from Alex. “Are you sure you want to do this now?” she hissed.

“What’s wrong?” I looked at her in bewilderment.

“Nothing, except that I thought you were pining over your relationship with Won Bin?” she whispered.

“I was but there are some things that happened that you wouldn’t understand Frost. Why are you making such a big deal over this?” I said.

“I’m not making a big deal over this. I just thought that it’s inappropriate for you to be involved with Alex so soon after your break up with Won Bin.” Frost said.

“It’s not soon, Frost. It’s almost close to a year since we broke up. Won Bin is willing to let me go so that he can achieve happiness with someone else. So what is wrong?” I looked at her, wondering why she couldn’t understand.

“Nothing. If you think what you’re doing is right, I can’t stop you.” She said softly.

“Look, I know this is quite unexpected but I’m happy with Alex now. I just hope that I’ll have your blessing just like how I blessed your relationship with Vanness.” I took hold of her shoulders.

“How did you know about Vanness and i?” it was her turn to look at me in bewilderment.

“I saw you guys together one day at the café, feeding each other breakfast. I thought I was going to vomit all over the street.” I grinned.

Frost blushed. “Oh.”

“Come on, let’s go join them before they suspect something is wrong.” I led Frost back to the table.

“So, I heard someone is in love.” Vanness teased as I sat down.

I smiled. Minutes later, Won Bin arrived with Cherian’s arm linked in his. Like my reaction, everybody raised their eyebrow at the approaching couple.

“This is a day of surprises. Am I thinking what I’m supposed to be thinking?” Vanness said.

Won Bin smiled and nodded.

“When did it happen?” I asked, happy for Won Bin and Cherian.

“Few days ago, when I was spending quite a lot of time with Cherian.” He grinned.

Cherian blushed.

“That’s good. I’m glad you found your happiness, Won Bin.” I said as he sat down next to me.

“I’m glad you found your happiness too, Caryn.” He smiled and signalled to Alex’s hand in mine.

Everybody seemed to have found their ideal partners. Isn’t this a happy ending? Yet, I know it doesn’t end this way. How will it end? When will it end? I felt heady with the liquor coursing through my veins and I stepped onto the road. The wind blew strongly and all of a sudden, I just dropped on to road and everything else was dark. So, it has finally ended. This is fate. To have gained all these friends and not forgetting my dear sister, Cherian, I do not regret anything.

-

The piano stood in the dark corner,
It kept me company through the days,
Silence crept up slowly but surely,
Drowning me with its cruel hands.

With your lifeless body in my hands,
I screamed at fate for taking you away,
How do you expect me to smile again?
I do not have such strength in me.

Without your tinkling laughter,
I sit in solitary silence,
Do not worry too much,
I will be okay soon.

As time passes by,
I understood why,
You left for a reason,
Like the season.

I will learn to let you go,
I know I will see you again,
I am sure in another life,
We will be reunited again.

Do not shed your tears for me,
I know you’re up there watching,
With time you will see,
That I will move on.

My love for you will never die,
I might let you go,
But my love for you will stay,
Like an everlasting sun.

You are my maiden,
You are my Venus,
To love someone like you,
Feels like a sin.

If it is a sin to love you,
I am willing to be condemned,
If hell is where I should be for loving you,
Then there is where I’d rather be.
