After a few seconds that seemed more like an eternity to her, the door flew open. A drunk Hankyung stood there, having to lean onto the door frame to support his balance. "Oh, it's you, Ri In. I thought it was that other...slut."
He made a face and took a swig from the bottle of alcohol in his other free hand. "This tastes disgusting. But it certainly does make me feel better!"
He laughed harshly. The laugh was cut short by a sudden burp. "Oh...excuse me. No, wait. Don't excuse me. She always made me say that. Well, excuse HER for caring. Like she's never burped or sneezed or taken a dump in her stinkin' life."
Ri In shut the door behind her. "Oppa...you need to stop drinking now."
She tried to take the bottle from his hand, but he simply held it over his head.
"Can't get it now, can you? Can you?" He laughed, his laugh high-pitched like that of a little boy's giggle.
"It's bad for you. Give it to me now!" she said sharply. He stared at her sullenly for a few seconds, pausing. Then he hiccuped and the bottle suddenly tilted. The remaining contents of the drink poured all over his head.
"Ahh!" He cursed. "That was my last bottle, too. Ri In, be a dear and go buy me another one, will you?"
Ri In went into the kitchen to search for a towel, disgusted. She had never approved of drinking. This she had made clear to Junsu when she refused to speak to him for an entire month after he had had a drink at one of the family parties she had invited him to. Her relatives, like him, had also failed to understand why she was so against it, but unlike her relatives, Junsu had stopped drinking altogether.
Grabbing an orange towel lying upon the counter, she walked back into the living room. Hankyung had fallen back onto his couch in a drunken stupor. He was now mumbling words incoherently while tears leaked from his eyes. "Slut...broke it...no more...last bottle..."
He hiccuped. Ri In shook her head, sighing. The last time she had seen Hankyung in such an awful state was the time that he had lost the spelling bee championship when they were younger-he had ended up refusing to eat anything for an entire day until his parents had called her and she had managed to coax him into having a bite of food. Hankyung had always depended on her, but he had also always been there for her. Back before she had met Junsu, she had often thought about how great it would have been to be in a loving relatioinship with Hankyung. He certainly already cared enough for her so that she could consider him a boyfriend. However, even back then, she had still found herself unable to feel anything for Hankyung but a sisterly affection. She used the towel to dry his tears and to wipe off some of the alcohol that had spilled over his face and shirt.
"I never should have been with her in the first place," he told her, his voice quiet. She was kneeling on the floor beside him, stroking his hand gently.
"No, probably not. But there's a reason that you were with her. You cared about her and she cared about you. It's her loss," Ri In reassured him. He snorted.
"Her loss...Ri In, you don't know why she broke up with me. It's my fault really. I mean, I knew that she was sleeping around with other guys. I just never thought I'd be the one who gets dumped." He rubbed his temples and exhaled deeply. Ri In's hand dropped to her side.
"What do you mean?" she asked, confused.
"I never cared about her. She never cared about me either. She just wanted to show off to her coworkers that she wasn't alone-that she had someone, too."
"But...why would you get into a relationship with someone you don't care about? And it lasted for nearly two years, too." Ri In's eyebrows were knit in confusion.
"It was mainly about fulfilling the physical needs we had."
"What?"
"Sexual desires."
"Oh!" Ri In blushed furiously.
"But I've always had feelings for you. You know that. That's what made her upset. I kept loving you even after all that time..." He sat up. Ri In's phone suddenly started to ring. Relieved at the excuse to leave, Ri In immediately reached for it. Hankyung's hand stretched out quickly and before she could even touch the phone, he had thrown it across the room. It lay on the floor, the batteries fallen out.
"Oppa..." Fear rose in her throat. "Why did you just do that?"
"I have loved you for so long..." He held her arm in a tight grasp. She struggled to free herself from his grip.
"You're scaring me. Let go!" she shrieked.
"Junsu doesn't deserve you. The amount of time he's liked you is nothing compared to all those years that I've loved you." He grabbed onto her other arm. Ri In squirmed, fearful thoughts entering into her mind.
"Please don't do this," she whispered, tears rolling down her face.
"I have waited for you for so long." Her body shook with sobs. His breath was hot against her ear, and it burned her deep inside as he whispered, "I love you."
She screamed, but no help came. It was almost as if she wasn't herself-as if she had floated above. She was watching herself fall under Hankyung, watching as the darkness overtook her. Watching as he stole her. She saw herself scream, yet she heard nothing. The screams were silent, and the silence somehow seemed to echo. She saw herself struggling to escape. She felt nothing, but she felt it all. The pain. The taste of her tears. She saw the stains of blood. Watched it trickle down her pale legs. Forever passed. She was herself again, and she had given up. She was watching a star fall behind his shoulder, and it took her several moments to realize that it was herself.
