Chapter 3

Junsu sat in his apartment, waiting. He glanced up at the clock yet again. Barely a minute had passed since he had last looked at it. Time was moving at an agonizingly slow pace. Where was Ri In? He checked his watch to make sure that his clock had not broken. The digital watch read the same time, but he felt just as distressed. It had been six hours. Where was she? Sure, he could understand that Hankyung was upset with getting dumped. What guy wouldn't be? But with Ri In there to cheer her up, it shouldn't take that long to bounce back from depression.

----

Ri In lay still on the ground. Hankyung was sprawled on the floor beside her, his arm wrapped around her waist. She bit back a sob as she removed his arm from her body and slipped into her clothes. She hugged her jacket tight around herself and quietly left the house. It was dark. There were no taxis in sight. She had wanted to walk anyway.

----

Junsu had blown out the candles set at the center of the table half an hour ago. The wax had started melting, and he knew how much Ri In hated to light short candles. All of the birthdays they had celebrated together had been with cakes she had baked herself that were topped off with a store-bought icing that he pretended to not know was store-bought and also with tall candles that she had purchased from a store that was forty miles away.

----

A car passing by honked at Ri In. The driver and other passengers whistled at her. They were young teenagers, but without even turning her head to look back at them, she broke into a run. Her legs carried her farther and farther away from the hysterically laughing boys. The cold wind whipped against her face. Her tears were no longer visible. She could barely find the strength to run, let alone cry. The straps of the new shoes she had chosen to wear cut into her ankles. The pain was nothing compared to what she felt inside.

----

Junsu started to do push-ups. He always worked out whenever he was feeling stressed. Ri In often complained that he didn't confide in her enough. Because of that, he had cut down his gym time from four days a week to just one. Although he had put on several pounds from the loss of exercise time combined with the new recipes Ri In forced him to try every few days, he had not minded. He heard the jingling sound of keys and the doorknob started to turn. He immediately stood up, his adrenaline rushing. The door opened. Ri In entered, turned around, and closed the door behind her. She locked it before turning around. She stared at the floor.

"Where have you been, Ri In? I've been worried sick!" Junsu shouted. "I know he's your best friend. I know he just got dumped. But I'm your boyfriend, and I've been waiting for you for six long hours! How could you spend such a long time there? How could anyone be that depressed? Today's our anniversary. Shouldn't that be more important? It's not as if he can't wait any longer! He can wait another day to be cheered up and checked up on, but today is our anniversary! Today, not tomorrow!"

He breathed heavily, the anger pulsing through him. Then he calmed down. Ri In remained silent. He cleared his throat.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that. It's just..." He took a few steps towards her. "I was so worried about you, you know?"

She still didn't speak. Junsu started to get worried.

"Ri In?"

She looked up at him, a lost look in her eyes. Then she collapsed into his arms and started to cry uncontrollably.
