Chapter 1

The Farm

Jaejoong scrunched up his nose as his foot touched the ground. He quietly closed his car door and walked over to the porch of the farm's main house. The dust, the rocks and, above all, the heat was getting to him. It felt like a thousand degrees outside and he hated himself for wearing a suit to this hell slab.

"Mr. Kim, I take it?" Jaejoong looked up as an elderly woman made her way out of the dusty house. She smiled very sweetly at the young man from her shaded porch

"Yes." Jaejoong returned her smile and walked towards the porch. "And, you must be Mrs. Jung?

"I am." She walked down and met Jaejoong at the stairs. "Please, Mr. Kim, I'm a old woman who sits all day. Lets walk while we talk shall we."

"That's fine with me." If one would of looked at Jaejoong, slightly squinted and turned to the left a little, they might of seen agitated marks forming on his pitch black hair. But Mrs. Jung, being the old woman she had introduced herself as, did not. So she smiled, and led the over heated business man away from the shade.

"So, Mr. Kim, I take it you've come as another man trying to get me to sell my property?"

"Yes," Jaejoong nodded. "My company wishes to buy this land and build a automobile factory."

"Your company?" She repeated. "You don't look like a big dog in a fancy suit. You must be a errand boy out to get the bosses land, right?"

Jaejoong slightly blushed at the hot fire that just got lit under his butt. "Frankly, I am just here to take your land, Mrs. Kim. And that is what I wish to discuss. How much are you willing to sell for?"

The old woman broke out in to a fit of breathless laughter. "I like you, Mr. Kim." She pounded her open hand in to his back. To her it must of just been some sort of friendly slap or something, but to Jaejoong, it was the closest thing to a square on punch he ever felt. "Not trying to suck up to me like every other monkey I've heard from."

"Well, Mrs. Jung," He smiled weakly, "Do you have an answer for my question?"

"Now that might be rushing it a little." She frowned. Mrs. Jung stopped and pointed to a large field of tall corn stalks. "The reason why so many of you are hunting after this land is that my crops are getting worse every year. At my age I've realized that every thing has to change, for better or worse. But you see, Mr. Kim, what I've realized is that people will come here with their black hearts whether you buy it from me now or steal it from my son after I'm dead. Both I've promised myself to never let happen." Here she stopped and sighed. It almost seemed that it made her tired to talk so much. "I grew up on this old dirt patch and I know what the word "Lose" means. I'm about to lose at this game for myself, and how its going now is that I'm going to pull my son down with me." She took another deep, long sigh then looked over at Jaejoong. "I hate to tell you this, Mr. Kim, but the last dog that came round here took of with my land papers. Not the deed, of course, but the numbers and such. I bet in that fancy suitcase you have a blank copy, so tell you what; I'm gonna let you stick round here to fill those out and give you a fighting chance like I did every one else."

"So," Jaejoong gulped, "You want me to measure this entire farm... now?"

Ms. Jung broke out in to more laughter that sounded like it came from a dieing dog. "No, you half starved chicken, not now." Jaejoong sighed and waited as the woman stopped laughing. "I have food for you inside, if you want it."

Jaejoong swiftly nodded and followed her back to the house. She was right in comparing the land to that of a old dirt patch, cause that was what it was. Except the fields. The grass was green around the rims of the oak fence and the corn, or what looked to Jaejoong like corn, grew high above the fence and in to the bright blue sky. Really all that anybody needed to start a beautiful western romance was a cowboy to ride in on a horse right now.

"Mr. Kim?" Jaejoong looked up to find Ms. Jung standing back on the old porch. "Your walking right past the steps, chicken." Jaejoong blushed but darted up the steps to the house. The old woman reached to open the rusty screen door but stopped to turn around when she heard a horse's footsteps.
