[Approximately Two Years Ago]

Kwon Boa swirled a strand of short black hair as she stared mindlessly at the building before her. It was a dingy sort of building. The stone engraved with the building’s name (Wellington High) was eroded and the letters were barely visible. Boa was disappointed that the building had not undergone maintenance during the summer, because seeing it now, it surely needed preservation. It was a depressing though, to know that she would have to spend the next ten months in that rotting structure.

“Boa!” A familiar voice cried and Boa turned to see her best friend running towards her—Kim Jae Joong.

“Hero!” Boa cried, happy to see her friend. She watched as he sprinted towards her and she was momentarily struck by his beauty. He was definitely eye candy for most of the girls in their school. Kim Jae Joong’s name was on every girl’s lips, and Boa couldn’t say that she’s not jealous. He had the engrossment of all the girls in the school—he could pick any one of them, why in the world would she pick such an ordinary girl like her? But she didn’t think too much into it, for they were friends. Their relationship was strictly platonic, and Boa would be the one to make sure of it.

“Hey Heroine,” He said with a small smile. It was their inside joke. He was her Hero if and only if she could be his Heroine. When he called her Heroine, a warm sensation spread through her. Whatever it was, she didn’t want it to go away. She looked up at Jae Joong and his flawless face. He motioned to the entrance to the school. “Why didn’t you go in?”

“And risk losing the last lingering moments of summer?” Boa cried, aghast, “Never! I want to prolong this moment, Jae.” She shifted her weight around and then took a seat on the steps of the school.

Her favorite season was the summer and she hated it when it came to an end. Summer was so carefree and reckless—she loved it. Boa never liked change, and she didn’t want to make such a drastic change just yet. She still wanted to wear tank tops, she still wanted to eat ice cream, and she definitely still wanted to feel the sand between her toes.

“Silly girl,” Jae Joong said with a laugh and took a seat right next to her. “Do you really hate school that much?”

Boa shot him such a menacing look that Jae Joong quickly shut his mouth. He knew better than to mess with Boa. After all, they were friends since they were in junior high school. “So are you going to stay with me or not?” She asked.

“I would love to, Heroine, but I would also like to make a good impression on my teachers and not go in LATE,” Jae Joong said, taking a stand. He motioned to the school. “The late bell is going to ring soon, Boa. Are we going in or not?”

“You’re going in. I’m staying.”

“Summer’s finished, Heroine.” Jae Joong said with a sigh and sat down once again. “Why don’t we just go in? It’s really not a smart move to be on the teacher’s bad side so early on in the year.”

“As long as I stay out here, summer still isn’t finished yet.”

Jae Joong could only chuckle in amusement. The girl really was too much.

He watched her as she looked up into the sky, admiring the morning light, “I don’t want to believe that all good things come to an end,” She then turned and looked at him straight in the eye, “I don’t want to believe that one day I would have to live without.”

The look in her eyes sent tingles down Jae Joong’s spine. What was she implying and why was she looking at him like that? Mustering up all the confidence he had in him, Jae Joong cleared his throat and said, “You don’t have to live without, Heroine,” He gave her a warm smile that lifted her hopes up, “Your Hero, I, would make sure of that.”

“You promise?”

“Scout’s honor.”

“You weren’t in the boy scouts.”

“What difference does it make, Heroine? I still promised you, and I promise you that I won’t break that promise.” He stood up from where they were seated. The bell had rung a good five minutes ago. They were officially late for their first day back to school. He offered her his hand, “So, may I have the honor of taking milady’s hand and walking milady to her class?”

She accepted his hand with a pounding heart even though she knew those words were just that—words. They were just joking around; this was another game for them; him pretending to be her knight in shining amour. “Of course you may, great knight.” She said and allowed him to lead her into the school even though she abhorred it. Her words, however, were not part of the game. Her words were spoken from deep within the heart. So deep within that she wasn’t sure if she should keep them in or let them out.

The hallways were crowded during lunch time, like usual. School was annoyingly predictable, and Boa had already started detesting it—and it was just the first day! She missed the sun’s golden rays on her bare back and the smell of suntan lotion. Instead of being at the beach, like she usually was, she was scurrying down a hallway of a dingy building she loathed.

Boa had to rush to the cafeteria to ensure that the window seat she shared with Jae Joong wasn’t taken. In a school like this, the window seats were scarce and were usually given to the upperclassmen. However, to their luck, Jae Joong and Boa had claimed the window seats since they were freshmen. Everyone knew that that table was theirs, but Boa was afraid that some feebleminded freshmen might have mistaken it for an empty booth.

Jae Joong, however, beat her to the table. When she arrived, he was already there, his books scattered around the table and in his hands were the brown bag which held his lunch.

“Hey,” Boa said with a pant and put her bag on the table as well, “If I knew you were so fast, I wouldn’t have rushed here.”

“My class was right down the hall.” Jae Joong said with a mischievous smile, “Should’ve told you earlier, huh? But then again, you need the exercise.”

“HEY!” Boa cried and reached across the table to smack him in the head, “Who are you to criticize?! You’re practically a food vacuum!”

“The food goes right through me,” Jae Joong retorted, “but the food you consume stays on your hips.”

She ignored the comment because Boa knew that it would be useless to argue with Jae Joong. She had never won an argument once. She glared at him—Jae Joong with that amused smirk on his face and those smoldering brown eyes. There he was, Jae Joong and his flawless skin, his definite cheekbones…and those pursing lips. She had them memorized for so long, but she would never tell. No one ever knew that she had memorized the contours of his face and grown to love them.

“What are you looking at?” Jae Joong asked with a chuckle.

“Nothing.” Boa instantaneously mumbled and tore her gaze away from his enchanting face. She grabbed her bag and took out her lunch. She had been caught; how embarrassing! She took out her sandwich and immediately proceeded to engulfing it.

“So, you never told me, Hero.” Boa said in between chews, “What have you done over the summer?” Boa had been so busy vacationing in Aruba that she had forgotten that Jae Joong spent the summer in their hometown. It had felt like he had been with her the whole summer because they had constantly kept in touch. She told him all about her activities throughout the season, but to be honest, she really hadn’t heard much from him. She had been so caught up in the sunny blue skies and the clear aqua waters of Aruba.

Jae Joong’s face immediately darkened. “Well, you know, Boa...the usual.” He muttered, running a hand through his hair. He always does that when he’s nervous and wanted the subject dropped. Boa had known him long enough to read his body-language. Certainly curious, but didn’t want to pressure Jae Joong, Boa immediately changed the topic.

“Well, Hero, during my summer, I was exposed to the sun and my hair became lighter in color. It’s a really ugly color now. I’m thinking about putting in extensions and dying my hair. I hate my short haircut anyways—the woman did a horrible job on it. What do you think, Hero?”

“Sounds cool. When are you planning to do it?”

“Soon.” Boa said, and took another bite out of her sandwich. She was glad that she had averted potential awkwardness with Jae Joong. She complimented herself on a job well done. However, the curiousity didn’t go away. Evidently, she would have to learn the hard way.
