“Hey! Where’s my money?” Joe asked from behind. Ariel grinned suddenly relief. She took out a one hundred dollar bill and handed to Joe.
“I don’t know why you did what you did earlier today but I wanted to thank you, it doesn’t matter that you’re asking for a hundred dollar or a thousand…I’m just glad that all bets are over.” Joe took the hundred dollar bill and stuffed it in his pocket.
“Hey, one hundred dollar isn’t asking a lot. Now you can start over…no more bets, ice cream or whatever.” He said and cleared his throat. Ariel nodded and awkwardly waved at him,
“Okay, thanks for helping me today…see you in school tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Did I say something wrong?” Ariel frowned, her eyes clouded obviously very confuse.
“Yeah, why would I see you in school tomorrow?” Joe asked his eye brows arched in question mark.
“I…you’re not going to school tomorrow?” Ariel took a couple steps away from Joe and started tiptoeing toward the front steps.
“Are you scared of me?” Joe asked. Ariel shook her head but continue backing quietly toward the front door.
“Why are you…?” Joe started to say, scratched his head and mumbled “Whatever.”
Ariel opened the front door and turned toward Joe,
“I was too afraid to tell you this before, but because of what you did for me today…I think there’s still a little bit of that little boy in you… the little boy that was my best friend in elementary school. The little boy that gave me ice cream to eat whenever I was sad, lonely or just nodded some encouragement; the little boy that I swear I would marry when I grow up. Did I tell you? I was really heart broken when we went our separate ways in Middle school, and not a day passed did I not think about you. I really thought you hated me because you stopped coming to my house, stopped calling me, and stopped saying hi to me in High School…but now I know no matter what…there’s still a part of that little boy in you that’s my best friend.”
Ariel blew him a kiss just like she did when they were little kids and closed the door, leaving a stunned Joe in front of her front porch.
He took the one hundred dollar bill out of his pocket and whispered to himself,
“And that little boy dreamed of marrying you too, he swear he would marry you when he grows up.” Suddenly Joe grinned and started whistling to himself as he walked away from Ariel’s house.
