Chapter 1

“Taeyoung noona! Wake up!” a high male voice knocked loudly on my door. “It’s time for school, noona, wake up!” I jumped at the sound of his voice breaking the still silence in my room. My heart beating fast, I sat up, wiping the tears I didn’t know had fallen.

“What a dream,” I muttered, shaking my head, shaking my body of the familiar feeling of abandonment. I plopped back down on the bed, pulling the covers over my head to block my cousin’s annoying voice out.

“Noona!” the voice called again, the voice of my beloved cousin. “Wake up!”

“I’m awake,” I mumbled, squeezing my eyes. I wanted to see how many more minutes I could get. I didn’t even get to see his face yet! And I wanted to know who dared to come and tell me he couldn’t be with me, so I can attempt to beat him up in my next dream.

“No you’re not, Noona, wake up!” he continued to pound on my door. “If you don’t hurry up, Hyung’s going to steal all of the hot water out of the shower, Noona!” I groaned loudly and tossed my covers off of my bed, running my hands through my wet, sticky hair. Summer was nearly here, and it just so happened that the air conditioner had decided not to work lately.

“I’m up!” I called for the third time, opening the door to see my half-naked cousin standing in front of her door. “Seungri, how many times do I have to tell you not to sleep without a shirt on? You know those girls next door don’t stop squealing if you keep wandering around like that!” I rolled my eyes at the exposure of his upper torso. He frowned, his brow furrowing.

“But it’s hot,” he whined. “I can’t help but wander around like this.” I sighed heavily and nodded, rubbing my left temple with my left hand. He could be such a handful sometimes.

“I know. Is Seunghyun still in the restroom?” I glanced down the hallway, the shut door of the restroom answering my question. “Right, well, have you washed up?”

“No,” he replied, “he’s been in there for about an hour already, Noona, make him get out!” I groaned loudly again and nearly stomped down the short, narrow hallway, towards the last door at the end. Raising my right fist, I pounded on the door noisily.

“Yah!” I called, “Seunghyun, save some water for the fish, or better yet, Seungri!”

“Fine!” the deep voice of my older brother called back, “I’m almost done, give me five more minutes!”

“Seunghyun!” I continued to pound on the door again. “Hurry up, we’re going to be late! I still have to fix breakfast and make lunch and…” Suddenly the door opened, allowing the steam from the hot shower to flow out. In my vision now stood my twin brother, only a few minutes older than myself, his body dripping wet and completely stark naked, with nothing more than a towel wrapped around his waist, causing much disappointment to all of his noona lovers, I’m sure. “Aiyo, it’s about time. How many times do I have to tell you not to stand there and admire yourself? The mirror can take so much, my brother!” I pushed passed him and into the steamy restroom. Grabbing my toothbrush and the hairbrush at the same time, I brushed both my teeth and my hair as fast as I could. “Seungri,” I called as soon as I wiped the white toothpaste off of my face, “it’s your turn. Hurry up, okay?”

“’Kay,” his childish voice answered as I walked out of the restroom, allowing him to enter. I returned to my room, shutting the door closed and grabbing my dirty, wrinkled school uniform, which I was forced to toss upon my body, to my dismay. Pulling my hair into a messy ponytail, I walked out of my room and into the kitchen. As I began to set some breakfast on the table for my brother and my cousin, a scream was heard. Immediately dropping whatever I had in my hand (which was inconveniently my breakfast) I ignored the crash the plate made against the kitchen tiles and rushed towards the source of panic.

“Seunghyun? Seungri?” I called out, anxiety rushing through my veins. “Where are you guys?” Once again, the scream was heard. The door to my brother’s room was immediately pulled open and out came my brother, his school shirt half-buttoned.

“What’s wrong?” he asked in a frantic. I shrugged and mouthed an ‘I don’t know’ to him. “Where’s Seungri?” Again, for the third time, the scream was heard once more. The two of us rushed down the hallway, and Seunghyun pounded against the bathroom door.

“Seungri!” his deep voice called, “are you okay? What’s wrong? Let us in!”

“Hyung?” Seungri’s meek voice could be heard from inside. “Hyung, there’s no more hot water!” I let out a deep breath that I hadn’t realized I had been holding.

“Seungri,” Seunghyun’s voice spoke sternly, “open the door.” Slowly, the lock on the door clicked and Seunghyun was able to easily turn the knob.

“Seungri!” I rushed in, grabbing a towel off the counter and enveloping his shaking, wet body.

“Don’t you ever do that to us again! Don’t you know how scared you made us feel when you just screamed like that?!” Seunghyun scolded him loudly, his booming voice bouncing off the small bathroom walls.

“I’m sorry, Hyung,” Seungri said softly, as I dried him with the towel.

“Too many things have happened that started with a scream, Seungri,” Seunghyun said, his voice almost a low growl. “Don’t you remember? Can’t you remember?”

“Seunghyun,” I scolded him, my eyes warning him to stop. “Don’t speak anymore.” I felt Seungri shake under me, causing me to wrap my arms closer around him. “Shh, Seungri ah, Noona is here for you. Don’t cry.”

“I’m sorry, Hyung,” he repeated, completely disregarding my words. “I didn’t mean to scream. The water was just so cold…I…I forgot.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I soothed him, drying his dark hair. “Let’s get you dressed, Seungri, before we’re late to school.” I stood up, satisfied that my cousin wasn’t about to get a cold any time soon and turned. “Come on,” I spoke to my brother, glaring daggers at him. He only returned the look, following me back out towards the living room. “Why did you do that?” I seethed in a low whisper.

“Do what?” he whispered back, avoiding my eyes, his hands working on getting his shirt buttoned over his ripped upper body.

“Don’t remind him,” I whispered, “about our parents. God, Seunghyun, can’t you be a little bit more sensitive?”

“Sorry,” my brother mumbled, not looking me in the eye. Instead, he now fumbled with his tie, his hands shaking. I sighed and pushed his hands away, fixing his tie correctly for him. “I panicked.”

“I know,” I said, smoothing out the wrinkles on his uniform. “I know. Just…next time, choose your words carefully. You don’t want to wake up to a Seungri alarm in the middle of the night again, do you?” I cracked a small smile, but it truly wasn’t funny. But I had to say something, right?

“No,” Seunghyun mumbled. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Now, come eat,” I said, walking away from him. He followed me once again into the kitchen. “Oh, damn it.”

“What happened?” Seunghyun asked, his gaze upon the eggs scattered within the glass on the kitchen floor.

“Let’s just say,” I grumbled, “I panicked as well.” I crouched down at began to pick up the pieces of the plate, gathering them up and throwing them in the trash can. As I stood back up again, Seungri had appeared at the kitchen table and was quietly eating the feeble breakfast I managed to stir up for the two of them. “Oh crap!” I suddenly exclaimed, causing the two of them to glance at me curiously. “School, let’s go, now!” I handed them each their lunches as we quickly grabbed our school bags, rushing out the door. I let out another big sigh. It seemed like sighing was all I could do lately. I slung my bag over my chest, letting it rest by my hip. I took Seungri’s hand, as if he was a child, and together the three of us rushed down the two flights of stairs.

“Wait!” Seunghyun waved at the bus that was slowly entering the Korean traffic. “Wait!” he raised his voice, running up to the front, his bag bouncing heavily from the numerous textbooks. Miraculously, the bus slowed down and Seunghyun turned to us, waving us over. Of course, we rushed to him immediately, after all, it wasn’t every day Seunghyun waved down a bus. Usually, he’d be the one telling me not to waste money on something trivial, like riding an air conditioned bus in the middle of 100 degree weather. But nonetheless, we now stood inside the crowded bus, standing in silence the entire ride to school.

“Hey, Noona,” Seungri said in awe, his face pressed against the dirty window of the bus.
“Seungri, get your face off the window,” I scolded him, pulling his shirt.

“Why is everyone gathered around in the front? Hey, is that a limo? It’s so shiny!” Seungri continued, ignoring my comments. “C’mon, let’s get off and see what’s going on!” He stood up, grabbing my and Seunghyun’s hands, pulling us off the large, cramped bus.

“Seungri, be patient,” Seunghyun said, but of course, the child didn’t listen to his elders. He continued to push through the crowd of school boys and girls, attempting to get into the front.

“Seungri, stop,” I pleaded him, attempting to apologize to everyone that my ignorant cousin knocked into.

“Whoa,” his adolescent voice said in awe as he finally came to a stop, standing in front of what seemed like all the students in school.

“Is there a celebration we didn’t know about? A celebrity coming to our school, perhaps?” Seunghyun commented, amusement obvious in his tone. I rolled my eyes. “Oh, lighten up, Taeyoung. If you keep rolling your eyes like that, they’ll fall out one day.”

“They will?” Seungri finally tuned back into reality, staring at his hyung with large eyes.

“No,” I scoffed, “they won’t. I’m just saying, if one more celebrity comes here and asks for my help in school work one more time and then expects me to cheat for them…” My eyes narrowed in anger at the last celebrity who attempted a fast one over me. It was pure heaven feeling their face against my fist.

“Look, the door’s opening!” Seungri’s attention was immediately fixed upon the long, black, gleaming limo again. I swear, that kid has ADD. Out of the limo came a teenage boy, his black Aviators clean enough to see my hideous reflection. He was tall, almost as tall as my brother, and on his face was a look of smugness. His hair looked so expensively styled, even I had to cringe at just imagining the price of his hair wax alone. I immediately didn’t like him. Instead of fawning over his apparent coolness (which I obviously didn’t see), I wanted to slap the smirk off his face, despite how cute it was. But it was still a smirk. A very conceited smirk. Through his nearly black Aviators, I felt his eyes scan the crowd, coming towards the spot where I stood with Seungri and Seunghyun. Quickly, I slunk back behind my brother, unconsciously sucking in my stomach as if that’ll help my visibility lessen.

“Ah, welcome, welcome…” the headmaster of the school chuckled delightedly, clapping his chubby hands together. I never really liked him, he always seemed to be eating something. “…Kwon Jiyong!”
