Chapter 1

Wedding Madness

\\It’s early January and the weather had cooled down tremendously, but that doesn’t matter. Today is the happiest day of my life. I’ve been looking forward to this day since the day I met her. We are finally tying the knot. If there is one thing that would dampen my happiness it’s if my good friend Ah Lik didn’t come to my wedding. The past year had been quite eventful. Our friendship has truly been tested. I feel really bad about what happened. If only Ah Lik could have the same happiness as me, if only he could find someone he could love and be loved in return. That would be a perfect ending wouldn’t it? Too bad life doesn’t work that way.//

Alan watched the guests take their seats in the pews. He wasn’t the only one happy today. It seemed everyone shared his happiness. He scanned the crowd, but there was no sign of Ah Lik. He sighed and looked down.

“Alan,” called a voice which made him snap out of his reverie. Alan looked up and saw Karen approaching him. He smiled.

“Glad you could make it.”

“Congratulations,” she shook his hands.

“Thank you.”

“You look very handsome today.”

“Are you saying I don’t look handsome on other days?” He joked.

She chuckled, “You look especially handsome today.”

“That’s better. I didn’t think you would come, since you were all the way in America helping your father.”

“It’s your wedding. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

“Well, why don’t you take your seat, the ceremony is about to begin,” Alan suggested. Karen nodded and made her way down the aisle. Everyone was settled in their seats and Alan gave the minister a nod. Music began to play and the crowd got silent. The front Church doors opened and there stood his wife to be and her father. Everyone stood up as Ah Sze walked down the aisle with her father by her side. She was glowing like all brides would on their wedding day. Alan couldn’t take his eyes of her. He thought, what a lucky man he is. When she got to the front, her father handed her over to Alan and they gave each other a smile.

The minister spoke, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of these witnesses to join Sum Long and Go Yat Sze in holy matrimony, which is commendable to be honored among all men. If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together—let them speak now or forever hold their peace.”

“Wait!” Everyone turned to see who was interrupting the ceremony including the bride and groom. To their surprise it was Ah Lik. There were murmurs through the crowd.

David, Ah Sze’s father thought, oh no not again.

Ah Lik was out of breath. “Ah Lik? What are you doing?” Alan asked. Everyone held their breaths. Ah Lik walked down the aisle still breathing heavily.

“You guys didn’t exchange vows yet, right?” Alan and Ah Sze looked at each other and shook their heads. “Good, I made it just in time. Sorry for running a little late.” He smiled. It was still dead silent. “What?” He questioned as he saw everyone staring at him in shock. “I’ll take my seat so you can continue. You didn’t think that I was going to stop you from getting married now did you?” He laughed trying to lighten up the atmosphere.

Alan broke into a smile, “Of course not.” Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Ah Lik found an empty seat up front and sat down. The ceremony continued and the bride and groom exchanged their vows and wedding rings.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.” Alan lifted his wife’s veil and kissed her gently on her rosy lips. The crowd stood and cheered.

Outside of the church, the bride and groom were sprinkled with confetti everywhere. It was time for Ah Sze to toss the bouquet to see who would be the next lucky bride. All her colleagues were getting ready to catch it. This was one opportunity they are not about to let go of.

“Ready,” said Ah Sze. She threw the bouquet over her head and the girls went crazy. They scrambled everywhere. It suddenly turned into a battle zone as the desperate women did everything they could to get their hands on the bouquet.

“I got it, I got it,” said Suki, but Anna snatched it from her. “Hey!”

“Ow, my hair. You’re pulling my hair!”

The struggle continued and one event led to another as one tripped and like dominoes toppled all the other. The bouquet is sent flying through the air and makes it’s way to Ah Lik who inadvertently catches it. Ah Lik has a puzzled look on his face when he saw that he caught the bouquet. All the girls were disappointed and blamed each other for what happened. Alan patted Ah Lik on his shoulders, “Guess you’re the next lucky groom.” Ah Lik gave a faint smile.

The newlyweds went inside the car and waved at all their guests as it drove off.

The reception that took place later that night was entertaining to say the least. Everyone loved to mess with the bride and groom with funny games and jokes. Alan and Ah Sze sang a duet and danced to the song “When I Fall in Love.”

As they went around giving toasts to their guests, Alan covered for Ah Sze since she wasn’t a very good drinker. He ended up really drunk. Ah Lik helped carry Alan to their new apartment. When they got home, Alan collapsed onto the sofa. “I think I’ll take it from here. Thanks Ah Lik,” said Ah Sze.

“No problem. If you need anything, give me a call.”

“I will, thanks.” Ah Sze escorted Ah Lik to the door. She shut the door and looked at her drunk husband on the sofa. She went over to his side and attempted to take him into their bedroom. She placed his hand over her shoulder and got him to stand up. He was very heavy. His breath smelled heavy with alcohol. It took them ten minutes to get to their bedroom. His body was sprawled on the bed. Ah Sze went into the bathroom and returned with a wet towel. She wiped his face with it. She undid his bowtie and changed him into his pajamas. After she was done with him, it was her turn to tidy up. She took a shower, changed into her pajamas, turned off the lights, and climbed onto bed. She looked over at her husband’s soft figure in the dark room with only the dim light flowing in from the window. He looked so at peace. She smiled, and shut her eyes. It was time she found her peace.
