“What is this for,” she scoffed at it.
“A token of your love for him.”
“What?” Lilly frowned.
“This will represent something of sentimental value. It will make him love you more.”
“If you say so, but I think it’s so tacky.” She chuckled.
“You’ll thank me once you become the most important woman in his life. Just don’t forget your dear old uncle when you are bathed in wealth and fame.”

A board meeting just finished and Ah Lik headed back to his office. His secretary stopped him. “Mr. Keun, a Miss Ho is waiting for you inside your office.”
“Thanks Mary.” He opened the door to his office and Lilly jumped right in front of him.
“Surprise!”
“You scared me.” He closed the door so that outsiders couldn’t see them.
“That was the whole point. Did you miss me?”
“Of course I did.”
“That wasn’t the only surprise I have for you.”
“Oh?” She dug into her purse and took out a black rectangular velvet box with a blue ribbon on top.
“See if you like it.” Ah Lik quickly opened up the box and there was a gold pin inside with “LN” engraved in it.
“LN?”
“Yes, Lilly and Nick. It’s a symbol of our love.” She really wanted to gag after she said that. That was the cheesiest thing she had ever said, she thought.
“Oh I get it. That’s so sweet of you. Thanks.” He gave her a kiss.
“So you like it?”
“I love it, but I don’t have anything to give you.”
“All I need is your love.” Again, she felt the contents of her stomach trying to make its way out the way it came in. Ah Lik was touched by her gesture. It was times like these that reminded him why he was so in love with her in the first place. “So where are we going for dinner tonight?”
“I told you I couldn’t be with you tonight because I’m going to be meeting some friends remember?”
“Oh yeah,” she suddenly remembered. “Why can’t I come?”
“Well, you don’t know them. It might be a bit awkward.”
“That’s why I should go so I can get to know them and they can get to know me. Unless…you’re ashamed of me,” she pretended to be hurt.
“No…no, of course not. I’m proud to have you as my girlfriend. Do you really want to go?” She nodded. “Okay, we’ll go together.” She hugged him. This was way to easy, she thought.

They had a table reserved at a pier side restaurant with a gorgeous view of the ocean and Hong Kong skyline. Alan and Ah Sze arrived first, followed by Ah Lik and Lilly. Alan waved at Ah Lik when he saw him looking for them. “Hey, sorry we’re late,” said Ah Lik.
“It was my fault,” added Lilly. Both sets of eyes were on her.
“You two don’t mind if I bring a friend along right?” They shook their heads, but kept their eyes on Lilly. “Let me introduce. This is…” He was about to say a friend of his.
“Lilly Ho, his girlfriend,” she butted in. “Nice to meet you.” She extended her arm for a handshake. Alan and Ah Sze’s jaw dropped when they heard that she was Ah Lik’s girlfriend.
Alan stood up and shook her hands, “I’m Alan and this is my wife Ah Sze.”
She shook Ah Sze’s hand next. “Please to make your acquaintance,” said Ah Sze.
After all the introductions they took their seats. Alan and Ah Sze exchanged glances at each other then looked at Ah Lik, hoping to hear an explanation. With Lilly there they all acted very courteous and didn’t say much. It wasn’t until Lilly excused herself to use the restroom that they became their usual selves.
Before Alan and Ah Sze had the chance to speak, Ah Lik spoke, “I know what you’re thinking. When did we start dating? Answer: Recently. How did I meet her? It’s a long story. You two don’t have to worry about me. This is a serious relationship. We both want it to last. Now it’s my turn to ask you some questions. Based on your careful scrutiny…don’t even try to deny it. I know you both were observing her the entire night. What is your impression of her? Can she pass as my girlfriend?”
“You’ve said it all. We don’t know what else to say,” replied Alan.
“Ah Sze, what do you think?”
“She’s not for me or anybody to judge. As long as you’re happy and you love each other, I have nothing further to say.”
“Nothing at all? Come on, anything comments and/or criticisms?”
“Well she is attractive,” he continued before Ah Sze could make any remarks, “but as always, no one is as beautiful as my lovely wife.” He held her hands. She smiled.
“You two make me sick.” Right after Ah Lik said that Lilly returned from the restroom.
“So what were you guys talking about?”
“They were complimenting on how beautiful you are,” responded Ah Lik.
“Why thank you. I agree. I just got this new facial done. Now my face feels like baby skin. It’s so soft. If you want, Ah Sze, I can give you some recommendations. Your skin sure needs some work.”
Alan tried to hold in his laughter. Ah Sze felt insulted, but nonchalantly replied, “That’s quite alright. Thanks anyways. Wow, look at the time," she pointed to her watch. "Honey we have a nine o’clock showing to get to.” Alan looked at her puzzled. “Come on, we don’t want to miss it. Bye guys. Thanks for the dinner Ah Lik and it was nice to finally get to meet you Miss Ho.” Alan finally realized what Sze was doing.
“Good night, Ah Lik. I’ll see you tomorrow," said Alan as he followed Ah Sze out.
When they were finally outside of the restaurant, Ah Sze stopped dragging Alan. He cracked up uncontrollably. “What are you laughing about?”
“I can’t believe she said that about you. I was trying so hard to not laugh in there.”
“I thought it was rude of her to say that.” Ah Sze frowned.
“She’s just very straightforward that’s all.” He wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t be mad. No matter what anybody says, I’ll still love you for who you are.” Her frown disappeared and was replaced by a smile. Alan always had a way to cheer her up.

Alan stood in front of Man Gwan’s door. He wanted to knock, but hesitated. The door suddenly opened and he was face to face with Man Gwan. “Here,” he handed her an envelope. “Don’t be late,” was all he said and returned to his room. Man Gwan opened up the envelope. Her eyes widened. An interview for a job at the customer service desk at the “Flying Mall,” was scheduled for tomorrow.
