Chapter 11

The Nemesis

Ah Sze and Man Gwan were standing in front of the mall. Man Gwan took a deep breath. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll do fine,” Ah Sze patted her on the shoulders.

“You think so,” she said anxiously.

“I believe in you.” Ah Sze gave her a warm smile.

“Oh, just one thing. Can we keep my relationship with Alan a secret?”

“Why?”

“I don’t want people to think that the only reason I got the job was because of Alan. I want it to be because I deserved it.”

“Okay, you have my word.”

“Thanks.”

“Now get in there and kick some butt!” Ah Sze watched Man Gwan run inside the mall. She walked in a few minutes later. The mall brought back so many memories. There were fond and not so fond ones. She went to the customer service desk to see her old friends again.

“Ah Sze,” said a surprised Gigi.

“Hey Gigi and Eva.”

“What brought you here?”

“Shouldn’t you be at home relaxing like a rich housewife,” added Eva.

“Don’t I get a nice welcoming?”

“Of course, you are welcome to visit us anytime. So how’s life without the hassle of rushing to work at nine in the morning and getting home at five?”

“Actually, I enjoy that better. I mean sure, it’s nice to not be stressed about work and all, but it does get boring staying at home all day.”

“Well, you can go shopping.”

“Everyday? Even that gets boring. If I had a choice I would gladly return to work, but you know Alan. He doesn’t want me to. He doesn’t want me to work so hard.”

“See that’s why we envy you.”

“I should let you two get back to work, before you blame me for getting you fired.” She laughed. “I’m going to find Alan.” She waved goodbye. She went up to the forty-eighth floor.

“Can I help you miss,” said a secretary.

“I came to see Alan.”

“Mr. Sum is a very busy man. Do you have an appointment?”

“You must be new here, I’m his wife.”

“Oh I’m so sorry, Mrs. Sum. I am new here actually. Go right on in.”

Ah Sze knocked on Alan’s door. “Come in.” He didn’t even look up to see who it was, but assumed it was his secretary Flora. “Flora, did you give that memo to Mr. Lam?”

Ah Sze cleared her throat, “Do I look like your secretary?” Alan looked up.

“Honey? What are you doing here?” He stopped his work.

“I came to support Man Gwan on her interview.”

“Oh, that’s right. How did it go?”

“I don’t know yet, she’s not done.” Alan looked at his watch.

“It might be a while. The man that’s interviewing her is known to be really slow. Well, I think I can afford a small break. Let’s go down for some refreshments."

They stopped by “Matchtoo.” As they were chatting and enjoying their drinks, a man from the table across from them looked in their direction. Alan’s phone rang. “Hello? What? Okay, I’ll be right up.” He hung up. “Sorry, I have to go. I’ll see you tonight.” He quickly ran off. Ah Sze sighed and sipped her ice tea.

The man stood up and approached her. “Hello Miss.” She looked up at him.

“Do I know you?”

“No, you don’t, but I’m giving you an opportunity to,” he smirked.

“No thanks, I’m not interested,” she quickly replied.

He took a seat. “Why not? I can be a nice guy.” This guy was starting to creep her out. She decided she better get away as soon as possible.

“Sorry, you see this ring,” she showed him her left ring finger that was occupied by a diamond ring. “I’m married.” She quickly grabbed her purse and made a run for it.

Ah Sze decided to wait for Man Gwan at the front of the mall. Man Gwan finally finished her interview and walked outside to find Ah Sze. “Ah Sze,” she called.

Ah Sze turned her head to where the voice was calling from. Man Gwan ran up to her. “How did it go?”

Man Gwan sighed, “I guess I can’t keep you company anymore. I got the job! I’m starting tomorrow.”

“That’s wonderful!” They embraced and jumped up and down with joy. “That gives us reason to celebrate. So what do you want to do?”

“I want to go shopping.”

“Let’s go then.”

They went to a boutique down the street. Man Gwan was looking through a rack of shirts. One shirt in particular caught her eyes. It was white with a very nice embroidery on it. She immediately fell in love with it. She was about to take it off the rack, but another hand grabbed it.

“This will go perfect with the new skirt I bought,” said the girl.

“Excuse me, but I saw it first,” said Man Gwan.

“So, you haven’t paid for it yet so anyone could buy it.”

“Well, I’m not going to let you get away with it.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Take back what rightfully belongs to me.” She grabs the shirt from her.

“Oh no you didn’t!” She grabbed the right shirt sleeve. They were yanking it back and forth.

“What’s going on,” said Ah Sze when she saw them fighting over the shirt.

“I saw the shirt first, but she stole it.”

“Lilly?”

“Oh it’s you. Well, she hasn’t paid for it yet, so it’s not even hers.”

“You know her?”

“Yeah, she’s a girlfriend of a friend of mind.”

“What’s your relation to her,” Lilly asked Ah Sze.

“She’s Alan’s cousin.”

“Great we all know each other. Now tell her to let go,” said Lilly.

“No! Ah Sze tell HER to let go!”

“Can’t we solve this in a more civilized manner?”

“No!” They both said simultaneously.

“It’s mine!”

“No, it’s mine!” They pulled so hard that the shirt tore in half. “Now look what you’ve done,” said Lilly.

“What I’ve done? You started it!”

The store manager came when he heard all the commotion. “Someone better pay for that.”

“I’m not paying,” said Lilly.

“You think I am?”

“Okay, both of you. Stop it! You’re both acting like babies.” Lilly and Man Gwan glared at each other. “I’m so sorry sir, it won’t happen again.” She opened up her wallet and gave the manager her credit card. “I’ll pay for it.”

“It’s settled then. I better not see the two of you set foot in this store again,” the manager warned.

After the manager swiped the card he returned it to Ah Sze and she signed the receipt. “Okay, let’s go home.” She dragged Man Gwan out of the store.

“That girl was a total B***. You should tell your friend to dump her.”

Ah Sze sighed, “I’m tired. Let’s just go home.” She walked ahead.

“I’m sorry you had to see that and for making you pay for it. I’ll pay you back. I just didn’t want to lose to that B****.”

“It’s okay. You don’t have to.”

“No, I insist. Just wait till I get my first paycheck. I can't wait to begin work tomorrow.”

"Tell me, why did you want to work at the mall? There are dozens of other things you could do."

"I heard the "Flying Mall" is a gorgeous place."

"It is. Wait till you see the Canopy."

"What Canopy?"

"There's a canopy suspended on the ceiling of the mall. It's really beautiful. It has images of the stars and even a flying unicorn."

"I looked up at the ceiling, but there was nothing there."

"You have to wait till night to see it. I encountered it accidentally. One night I was at the mall late so I saw it. Want to know a little secret?"

"Yeah."

"That's where I met Alan. It was actually the second time we ran into each other, but it was the first time we really spoke."

"That sounds so romantic. Now I really want to see this canopy and maybe I'll run into my true love."
