“Hey Alan, what’s up?”
“About the pin, I don’t think Man Gwan did it.”
“Man Gwan?”
“My cousin.”
“Oh, yeah if that’s her name. I know.”
“You know?”
“Upon closer look, I saw that the pin’s design was faulty. The clip was loose so it comes off easily. It must have dropped when she bumped into me.”
“Well, that solves everything then.”
“Not yet, I still need to apologize.”
“You go ahead and do that. She’s at the customer service desk right now.” Alan winked at him.
Ah Lik saw Man Gwan at the customer service desk, but was nervous about confronting her. She must be really mad at him for accusing her for something she didn’t do. He began to think a simple sorry wouldn’t suffice. He humiliated her in public. He had to think of something. “That’s it,” he thought out loud.

“Check out my new earrings,” said Gigi, flashing her earrings at Eva.
“They’re so pretty. Where did you get them?”
“I ordered them from a catalog.”
“I should get myself a pair.” They were approaching the customer service desk and spotted Man Gwan there. “Oh you should hide them if you don’t want to lose them, if you know what I mean.”
“You’re right.” She quickly took them off.
“Hi Gigi, hi Eva.” Man Gwan waved and smiled at them. They completely blew her off. Her smile faded and she went back to her work. Suddenly the big screen came on. Music played followed by Ah Lik appearing on screen. Everyone looked up on screen including Man Gwan.
“Good morning ladies and gentleman. If you don’t know who I am, my name is Kuen Lik. I’m this mall’s executive officer. Yesterday, I made a terrible mistake. I accused an innocent young woman of committing a crime in front of everybody. I can only imagine how angry she must have been and still is now. I was so sure that she did it that I failed to see from another perspective. This morning, I’ve learned that I was wrong. I had wrongly accused her. It was my mistake that cost her, perhaps, her reputation. I wanted to apologize to her personally, but I thought doing it this way in public, would do her greater justice. I want to clear her name and to make sure that all those who have witnessed the injustice yesterday understand that she is not a thief. She didn’t do anything wrong. It was I, who made a mistake and I want to ask for forgiveness. I’m sorry Chung Man Gwan. I hope you can forgive me.” The screen went blank.
The crowd chattered amongst themselves. Some were wondering who this mysterious girl was. Man Gwan was astonished that Ah Lik would come on screen to apologize to her. Eva and Gigi immediately apologized to Man Gwan for being so rude to her.
“That was so sweet of Ah Lik to apologize to you like that,” said Gigi. Man Gwan smiled inside and out. Things were really starting to look better for her. Ah Sze was right. She hoped this was just the beginning of a fresh start.
Man Gwan had lunch with Alan and Ah Lik stopped by. “Come join us,” said Alan.
He didn’t even look at Man Gwan as he still felt guilty for what happened. “It’s okay, I can sit over there.”
“Ah Lik, please join us," said Man Gwan.
“Well…” he finally looked at Man Gwan. “Okay, if you insist.” He sat down next to Alan.
“Oh I forgot, I need to send a document over to Mr. Yim. You two enjoy the rest of your meals.” He wiped his mouth with a napkin and rushed off leaving only Man Gwan and Ah Lik together.
Ah Lik and Man Gwan didn’t say anything to each other. He chewed on his sandwich and she sipped her drink. “Thank you.”
Ah Lik looked up at her, “For what?”
“For what you did earlier. It was very sweet of you.”
“Oh, that? It was nothing. I mean, I was obligated to.” They were quiet once again.
“So…” they both said simultaneously.
“You go first,” they said at the same time.
“Alright I’ll go first,” Ah like chuckled. “So you’re Alan’s cousin?”
“Yeah, younger cousin.”
“He never told me he had a cousin before.”
“I would figure. We weren’t really close.”
“So what was it that you were going to say?”
“I was going to ask if you’re Alan’s good friend.”
“We’re best buds, practically like brothers.”
“Oh that’s nice. How did you guys meet?”
“At the gym. The funny thing was he thought I was interested in him.” He laughed.
“What? Interested in him? He thought you were gay?”
“Yeah, he wasn’t used to a nice guy like me. How do you like the mall so far?”
“It’s been a little crazy the past few days, but it’s getting better.”
“Good.”
“I should get back to work. Unlike you, I’m just a customer service rep.”
“Okay, I’ll see you around?”
“Of course.”
“It was nice to officially meet you.” She smiled and nodded.
"Oh and by the way, I forgive you." She said before she left.
She was a nice girl, pity they got off to a rocky start, he thought, but that doesn’t matter anymore. He had a feeling that they are going to become great friends.
