Chapter 15

House Party

It was Gong jai’s one month anniversary. In order to celebrate Coco decided to have a family dinner at her house. Alan and Ah Sze were the first to arrive. Upon seeing them, she gave them each a hug. “You two are early. The party doesn’t even start till seven. It’s only five.”

“I wanted to see if there’s anything I can help with,” said Ah Sze.

“Everything is taken care of. We have a maid remember? Besides, you’re a guest here so you should just enjoy yourself.”

“That’s what I keep telling her,” said Alan.

“Here,” she dragged her sister to the couch, “have a seat and relax.”

“Oh fine. Where’s Jason?”

“He’s out buying something.”

“How about my little nephew?”

“He’s asleep.”

“Ma’am, which flavoring should I use,” said the maid.

“Here let me see,” CoCo excused herself and went into the kitchen.

“This place hasn’t changed. Remember the first time we came here?”

“Uhggh..don’t remind me. It was so embarrassing.”

“Karen’s friend thought she and I were dating, but you blurted out that you were my girlfriend. You were jealous. I just love it every time I see how important I am to you.”

“I was drunk and excuse me, but you’re not that important.” She pinched his cheeks. “It should be the other way around. Remember how you turned down a valuable opportunity to go to Singapore to further your career just for me?”

“Yeah..yeah, I remember.” Gong Jai began to cry. “I think he’s awake, should we tell CoCo?”

“She’s busy right now, here’s our opportunity to help.” She got up and went into Gong jai’s room. “There’s my little nephew.” She picked up Gong jai. “Do you know who I am?” Gong jai continued crying. “There…there, don’t cry Aunt Sze is here.” She made little cute sounds to cheer up Gong jai. Alan stood and laughed. “What?” Gong jai stopped crying.

“You're so cute when you do that.”

“Look Gong jai, do you know who he is?” She pointed to Alan. “He’s your Uncle Alan. Say hi Uncle Alan.” She took his tiny hands and made waving motions. Alan waved back. Gong jai began crying again. “Aww…did Uncle Alan scare you.”

“I scared him? I think you did. Here, let me hold him.” He extended his arms.

“Fine, but be careful.” She gently handed the baby to Alan. “Watch his head.”

“I know how to hold a baby.” Alan began playing with Gong Jai. “Hey little one.” He continued crying. Alan made funny faces to get him to stop crying. When he stuck out his tongue Gong jai smiled. “You like that huh?” He continued sticking his tongue out several times and each time Gong jai smiled. When Alan stopped he cried again.

Ah Sze laughed, “he likes it when you stick your tongue out.”

“Yeah I know,” he stuck his tongue out again and Gong jai stopped crying. “Do I have to do this the whole time? I’m getting tired.”

“There you are. I was wondering where the two of you disappeared to,” said CoCo.

“Looks like your mommy is here to save the day.” He handed the baby over to CoCo.

“Gong jai, were you behaving?”

“He was for the most part,” said Ah Sze.

“That’s strange because he usually cries when strangers pick him up. I remember when dai ka jei (big sister) picked him up he threw up all over her. She was so mad. Now she never wants to hold him again.” Gong jai started crying again.

“I think he’s hungry,” said Ah Sze.

“I think so too. I’m going to go feed him.” She went to the kitchen to get his baby bottle.

The doorbell rang. “That must be them,” said Ah Sze. She went to open the door. Her dad, David and her grandma came. Half an hour later, Martin and Chris came.

Everyone gathered around the dining table. It was a quarter to seven everyone was starving, but Jason wasn’t back yet. CoCo tried calling him, but all she got was a message.

“Sorry guys. He’ll be back soon,” said CoCo.

“What is wrong with that boy? It’s his son’s special day and he’s late? Unbelievable,” said David.

Jason finally came home carrying bags of stuff. “Hey everyone, did you start without me?” All he got was a cold stare from everyone. “What?”

“Jason! You’re late,” yelled CoCo.

“I thought the party started at seven thirty.”

“I said seven.”

“Really? I heard seven thirty. I’m sorry. If you guys were hungry you didn’t need to wait for me.”

“Unlike you, we are courteous people,” said David.

“I know…I know, I’m so sorry.” He tried to lighten up the mood, “I bought beer, peanuts, a deck of cards, and a mahjong set. We can all have some fun later.” He raised the two bags in his hands.

“Well aren’t you going to sit so we can begin eating,” said Lang Por (the grandmother)

“Right of course.” He gave the bags to the maid and took a seat besides CoCo. They finally began eating.

After dinner the males played Poker while the females played Mahjong.

“Full house,” said Alan as he revealed his deck. Groaning noises followed.

“You again? You’ve won every game so far. That’s it, I’m out,” said Martin.

“That fast Martin? Are you afraid that if you lose too much Chris would get mad at you?”

“I agree with Martin, I’m out too. Geez…you and your lucky hand,” said Jason.

“How about you Dad? Ready to give up yet?”

“One more. I don’t think you’ll win this time.” The cards were reshuffled and dealt out again.

Over on the girl’s side Ah Sze was also beating everyone.

“What is up with you tonight? I swear if you win again, I’m going to stop playing,” said Chris.

“Yeah, last round for me too,” said CoCo. They reshuffled the tiles and began the next round.

----------------

Martin and Jason both looked at David’s cards. They were giving each other approving nods. “I want to see if you can beat me this time,” David smirked.

“Bring it on,” said Alan.

David revealed his cards, “A Straight, Hah, beat that!”

“Good one,” he shook his head, “but just not good enough.” He showed his hand, “Royal Flush.”

“What?” David slammed his hands on the table. “Impossible.”

“Yeah, were you cheating,” said Jason.

“Nope, it’s all skill,” Alan beamed.

Meanwhile, Ah Sze won the final round. “Sorry girls, maybe next time.” The party was over and everyone headed home.

Alan and Ah Sze walked down to his car. They were laughing and bragging about their winnings. “You should see the look on your dad’s face. It was priceless,” said Alan.

“I think I won a months salary tonight.”

“Really, that means I don’t have to give you money next month.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” Ah Sze warned.

“I’m kidding,” he chuckled.

“Tonight was fun. We should do this more often.”

“You know we could have our own little parties.”

“With just the two of us? It wouldn’t be the same.”

“No, with a family of our own. We could have dozens of kids running around that’ll be more than enough to have a party.”

“What do you think I am? A baby machine?”

“No of course not. You are my lovely beautiful wife who is going to bear my beautiful looking kids.”

Ah Sze rolled her eyes, “Who ever said I was going to have your children?”

“Not have my children ay…who’s children will you have?”

“I don’t know, maybe I’ll meet a guy that’s a lot better than you.”

“I’m the best that’s out there. What more do you want? You’ve got an A+ quality guy right here,” he pointed to himself.

“Are you sure you want me to have your children? What if you see someone better and regret it?”

“From the day I asked you to marry me, I knew there could be no other. You’ve got my heart all locked up. Besides me, the only other owner of my heart is you. It’s yours for safe keeping.”

Ah Sze was so touched and filled with happiness that if she were to die right there and right then it would be worth it. She hugged Alan tightly refusing to let him go. It was almost like she was afraid that if she let go, he would disappear forever. “That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me. It was even better than the marriage proposal.” A tear came to her eye.

“Ah Sze,” they moved apart. “Everything I’ve said, I meant.” He dried her tears. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”
