Chapter 17

Alone Together

“We’re here!” Alan parked a car along the side of the road. They each put on their hats and sunglasses. They went into the trunk, got all the supplies, and hiked into the woods.

The men carried all the gear while the women followed behind. They walked a mile into the woods and found a nice spot under a tree. “We’ll stop here,” said Alan. They dropped the stuff down and set up the tents. Three tents were set up. “Alright, everything is set up and ready to go. What do you guys want to do now?”

“Let’s go hiking,” said Ah Lik. “There’s plenty of sunlight.” They all nodded in agreement.

“We’re going to pair up so if we get lost we’ll have one other person with us,” said Alan.

“Well of course you’re going to be with Ah Sze,” said Man Gwan.

“That leaves you two,” Alan pointed to Man Gwan and Ah Lik.

“Okay, it’s me and her then,” said Ah Lik. Each pair got a backpack that contained a flashlight, two bottles of water, insect repellant, a compass, some crackers, and a first aid kit.

Alan carried the backpack for his team and Ah Lik carried it for his. “Ready? Let’s go. We should try to stick together.” They walked into the woods with Alan and Ah Sze leading the way. The beginning of the trek went by pretty smoothly. The terrain was nice and leveled. When they began to go uphill it began to get really rough. Man Gwan was panting heavily. She lagged behind. Ah Lik noticing that Man Gwan was not right behind him, stopped and turned around. He walked down and found Man Gwan leaning against a tree.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“I’m tired. You guys actually have fun doing this?” She wiped her sweat.

“Wow, you’re really out of shape.” He took out a bottle of water and handed it to Man Gwan. “Here, drink some water.”

“Thanks.” She drank the water quickly. The nice cold water soothed her throat tremendously. “I was dying of thirst.”

“Come on, we should get going. They’re probably really far ahead by now.”

“Why didn’t you tell them to wait?”

“I thought that we could catch up. Come on, let’s go.” They continued to hike up the hill. Alan and Ah Sze were no where in sight. “I guess we lost them.”

“What are we going to do?”

“It’s okay. We’ll have our own little excursion. We’ll get back to camp by nightfall.”

“Can you pick an easier terrain?”

“I’ll do my best.” They made a left into the woods.

Alan and Ah Sze were so caught up in their own conversations that they didn’t even realize Ah Lik and Man Gwan were no longer behind them.

“How are you two doing,” asked Ah Sze. When there was no response she turned around. They weren’t there. “Alan, they’re gone.” Alan turned his head. “Should we go back?”

“Nah…I’m sure they’re fine. Why do you think I split us up into two? She’ll be fine with Ah Lik. I’m sure they’ll meet us back at the camp by nightfall.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, come on.” They continued walking.

----------------------

“Ow,” Man Gwan yelled in pain. Ah Lik stopped and ran to her.

“Are you okay? What happened?” His face was full of concern.

“I sprained my ankle.” She rubbed her ankle with her hand.

“Let me see,” he took a look at her ankle. It was swollen and red. “It doesn’t look good. Can you still walk?”

“I’ll try.” Ah Lik helped her up. “Owww,” she shook her head. “I can’t. It hurts too much.” Ah Lik took off his backpack. “What are you doing?”

“Put it on.”

“What?”

“Put it on so that I could give you a piggy back ride.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes, you don't want to be stuck out her for the night now do you?”

“No.”

“Then put on the backpack and get on my back.” He bent over. Man Gwan did as he said. After putting on the backpack, she climbed on his back. “Hold on tight.” He got up and started walking. “Boy, you’re heavy.”

“It’s not me, it’s the backpack.”

“The backpack isn’t that heavy.”

“Where are we going now?”

“Back to camp. There’s no point in trying to hike with your ankle like that.” Man Gwan smiled. Ah Lik was so thoughtful. She felt safe with Ah Lik by her side. It felt really comfortable on his back, so comfortable that she forgot about her sprained ankle.

-----------------

Alan and Ah Sze returned to the campsite as it was getting dark. “They’re still not back yet,” said a worried Sze.

“Don’t worry, they’ll be fine.”

“It’s getting really dark. It’s going to be very hard for them to find their way back.”

“That’s perfect then. They get to have some time alone,” he chuckled.

Ah Sze raised an eyebrow, “Alright Mister, what is it that you have up your sleeves?”

“Nothing, but if you think about it, don’t you think they are perfect for each other?”

Ah Sze gave it a thought, “You know what? You’re right. They do look cute together. At least Man Gwan is ten times better than Lilly.”

“You see, so if they have to spend the night together, maybe ah Lik would change his mind and ditch Lilly.”

They both smiled at that thought.

------------------

“Are we lost?”

“No, we’re not lost. We’re almost there, don’t worry.” He moved the flashlight around.

“You said that two hours ago.”

“I did? Must have forgot.”

“Men, why can’t they just admit they’re lost?”

“We’re not lost.”

“Not lost are we? Then tell me genius, where are we?”

“We’re…we’re in the woods.”

Man Gwan rolled her eyes. “Come on just admit it!”

“Fine, we’re lost. You happy now?”

Man Gwan nodded. “But I would be much happier if we got back to camp.” Suddenly the flashlight died. “What happened? Why did you turn off the flashlight?”

“I didn’t it just died on me. It’s probably out of batteries.”

“What?”

“Would you quit screaming in my ears?”

“Sorry...What do we do now?”

“I guess we have to spend the night out here. It’s useless to try to find camp. It’s too dark.”

“It’s all your fault.”

“My fault? Excuse me, but I wasn’t the one that lagged behind or the one that sprained my ankle.”

“Oh whatever, put me down.”

“Why?”

“Well, we’re not going anywhere.” Ah Lik bent over so Man Gwan could get off.

“Let’s head over to that tree. We’ll stay there for the night.” They walked over with only the faint glow of the moon guiding them. They sat down.

“Some trip. Remind never to go hiking again,” said Man Gwan. “I thought you went hiking before?”

“I did, but it was with a large group and we didn’t get lost.” Man Gwan sighed and there was a grumbling noise. “What was that? A coyote?”

Man Gwan smiled, “Nope, just my stomach.”

“Oh, let’s see if there’s any food in this bag.” He opened up the backpack and found some crackers. “Crackers?”

Man Gwan snatched them from Ah Lik and began stuffing them into her mouth. “Sorry, but I’m starving,” she said with her mouth full. “You want some?”

“No thanks, since you’re so hungry you can have it.”

“Okay, don’t say I didn’t ask.” She quickly finished all the crackers.

“Well at least we can see the stars.”

“I’ve never seen that many stars in my life…achoo,” she sneezed.

“You cold?”

“A little.” Ah Lik removed his jacket and put it on Man Gwan. “Thanks,” she smiled.

“No problem.” They chatted for the rest of the night until they fell asleep.

Early the next morning, Man Gwan woke up to find that her head was resting on Ah Lik’s chest. She immediately sat up and her heart pounded hard against her chest. She felt her face heating up and knew she must be blushing. Ah Lik woke up. “Good morning,” he said.

“Mor..Morning,” she stuttered. “We should head back to camp.” She got up.

“But your ankle?” He looked up at her.

“It’s a lot better now,” she lied. “Come on let’s go. We’ve already kept them waiting long enough.”

Ah Lik got up and they started to find their way back. Ah Lik started cracking up.

“What?”

“Look.” He pointed to the tents down the hill. “The campsite was just right down there.”

Man Gwan’s eyes widened. “What? We slept out here for nothing?”

“Come on let’s go down.” He walked down the hill. Man Gwan walked down carefully because her ankle still hurt.

Ah Sze got out of the tent and saw Ah Lik and Man Gwan coming down. “Hey, where were you two?”

“We sort of got lost.”

“I figured. Well, pack up your stuff, we’re leaving soon.” They put away the tents and all their belongings and walked to Alan’s car. They put everything in the trunk and they got into the car. Man Gwan didn’t make eye contact with Ah Lik.

“So did you guys have fun,” asked Alan.

“No, it was terrible. I got all these mosquito bites,” said Man Gwan. “Don’t ever ask me to do this again.”

“Okay…how about you Ah Lik.”

“I thought it was rather interesting. I would do it again.”

“Great, well, we had lots of fun right honey?” Ah Sze smiled and nodded. Alan turned on his radio and “My Valentine” played again.

“Alan, can you please turn off the radio?”

“But I thought you like this song,” said Ah Lik.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t mean I have to listen to it all the time. Alan turn it off,” she said bitterly.

“Alright…geez what’s with you today?” He switched it off. They didn’t say anything the rest of the trip home.

“We’re here,” said Alan. Man Gwan was about to open the door and race out. “Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“This is Ah Lik’s home.”

“Oh,” she blushed.

“I wouldn’t mind, if you wanted to go home with me,” joked Ah Lik.

She blushed even more. “No thanks.”

“Well, it’s been fun. See you guys around.” He got out of the car and went to the trunk to pick up his belongings. He waved at them and Alan drove off.

When they got back to Alan’s apartment, Man Gwan quickly limped into her room.

“What’s gotten into her,” asked Alan.

“Beats me,” Ah Sze noticed that Man Gwan was limping.

Man Gwan closed the door and collapsed on her bed. She sighed. She covered her face with her pillow. “Snap out of it…snap out of it Man Gwan,” she repeated. There was a knock at her door. She sat up quickly. “Come in.” Ah Sze came into her room. “Hey, what’s up,” she smiled.

“I wanted to ask you that. You’ve been acting a little strange since we've got back.”

“Strange? I wasn’t acting strange. I was just being me.”

“Is that Ah Lik’s jacket,” she pointed to the jacket that Man Gwan was wearing.

Man Gwan looked down, “Oh this one, yeah, I was cold last night so he loaned it to me. I forgot to give it back.”

“I see. Did you get hurt? I saw you limping.”

“Oh, it’s nothing, just sprained my ankle on the hike,” she shrugged.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, nothing to worry about.”

“Okay, if you say so. Well, I’m going to go unpack.” Ah Sze left her room and shut the door.

Man Gwan sighed. I hope she didn’t pick up on anything else, she thought.
