“Yeah.”
“Please hurry, I feel really sick.” She covered her mouth.
Man Gwan opened up the door, “it’s all yours.” Ah Sze quickly went over to the toilet, lifted up the seat, and vomited.
“Are you okay? Was it something you ate,” asked a concerned Man Gwan.
Ah Sze finished up and flushed the toilet. “Might be just the flu.” She went over to the sink to wash her mouth and hands. She spotted Ah Lik’s jacket hanging to dry. “Did you hand wash his jacket?”
“Yeah, the label said ‘do not machine wash.’”
“You could have taken it to the dry cleaners.”
“Oh yeah, guess I didn’t think of that.” Ah Sze held her head. “Are you okay, you don’t look so great.”
“I feel lightheaded.”
“That’s it. You’re going to a doctor. Come let’s go.” She dragged Ah Sze out.
------------------
“It’s nothing serious right? doctor,” asked Ah Sze.
“It’s nothing to worry about.” The doctor looked over her file.
“Lately I’ve been feeling really lightheaded and nauseous.”
“That’s perfectly normal.”
“Normal?”
“Yes, when was the last time you had your period?”
“I think I’m late this month.”
“Yep, my early prediction was right. You’re three weeks pregnant. Congratulations.”
“What? I am?”
The doctor nodded. “I’m going to refer you to an obstetrician so you can get your regular checkups.”
“Thanks doctor.”
“No problem. Now remember you should watch your diet and be careful with everything you do.”
“I will.”
Man Gwan was waiting in the waiting room for Ah Sze to finish. She stood up when Ah Sze came out. “So, what did the doctor say?”
“I’m pregnant,” she smiled.
“You are? That’s great!” She clapped her hands together. “Alan is going to be so happy.”
------------------
That afternoon Ah Sze went to eat lunch with Alan. After lunch they took a walk around the mall.
“There’s something different about you today, but I can’t figure out what,” said Alan
“Really? What is different?”
“I don’t know. It’s like you’re glowing. Something must be up.”
“You really want to know?” He nodded.
“Follow me then.” She dragged him.
“Where are you taking me?”
“You’ll see.” They turned to the left. “Okay, I want you to close your eyes.”
“What?”
“Just do it.”
“Okay.” He closed his eyes.
“No peeking…and just follow my lead.” She pulled him into a store. “You may open your eyes now.”
He opened his eyes and saw that they were in a baby store. “Why did you take me here?”
Ah Sze went and got a set of pink clothes and a set of blue, “Don’t you think our baby will look cute in either one of these?”
“Our baby?” He then suddenly realized, “You’re pregnant?” She nodded. He hugged her and twirled her around. “That’s wonderful! I’m so happy.” He yelled, “I’m going to become a father!” He got people’s attention.
“Shhssh…everyone is looking.”
“Let them look. I want them to share my happiness.”
Alan told everyone he knew at the mall that he was going to become a father. Everyone congratulated him.
----------------------
“Hey congratulations, Alan,” said Ah Lik.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t forget, I get to be the baby’s godfather.”
“Of course, I’m saving the title especially for you.”
“How are you going to celebrate?”
“We’re having a party at my apartment.”
“Am I invited?”
“Of course. How could I leave you out?”
--------------
When Ah Sze’s family found out that she was pregnant, they all went ballistic. David cried happy tears. This wasn't the first time that he was going to become a grandfather, but each time felt like the first time. CoCo gave Ah Sze some advice about pregnancy while Chris asked Ah Sze for advice on how to get pregnant. Alan’s apartment became a party zone.
While everyone surrounded Ah Sze, Man Gwan walked out to the balcony to get some fresh air. She was happy for her cousin and cousin-in-law. She sighed. When will she find her own happiness?
“Hey,” said a voice behind her. She turned to see that it was Ah Lik.
“Hi,” she said in a sweet voice.
“What are you doing all alone out here? Shouldn’t you be joining the party?”
“I just wanted to some fresh air,” she smiled.
“It’s so great to see Alan and Ah Sze so happy.”
“Yeah, I wish them the best. Oh,” she suddenly remembered. “I have something to return to you.” She went into her room and brought out Ah Lik’s jacket. “Here. It’s washed and everything.”
“Thanks.” He took the jacket from her.
“I should thank you for loaning it to me.”
“It smells nice.”
“Oh I used Cherry Blossom scented detergent.”
“You do know that it can’t be machine washed right?”
“Yeah, that’s why I,” she almost said hand washed it, but paused just in time, “took it to the dry cleaners.
“But you just said you used Cherry Blossom scented detergent.”
“Did I? I meant my clothes. I thought you said my clothes smelled nice.”
“Oh, okay…” There was an awkward silence. “I’m going to get more juice,” he flashed her a smile and went back into the apartment.
“Okay.” Phew, that was a close one she thought, but that smile. She loved his smile. Why must he torture her with that killer smile?
