Chapter 19

Without a Doubt

“Ah Lik!” Man Gwan ran up to him when she saw him leaving the mall.

“Hey, shift’s over?”

“Yeah, where are you heading?”

“I’m going to buy a gift.”

“A gift?”

“Yeah, that gives me an idea. If you don’t mind can you come with me to help choose?”

“Sure, but I’m not sure I have great tastes.”

Ah Lik and Man Gwan stopped at a jewelry shop. “Which necklace do you like better? That one,” he pointed to the silver necklace with a heart pendant, “or that one,” he pointed to a diamond necklace with two hearts.

“I like the one with the heart pendant. It’s simple, yet pretty.”

“Okay. Excuse me may I have that one please,” he pointed to the diamond necklace with the two hearts.

“Of course sir.” The store attendant took out the one he wanted and boxed it.

“But I said I like the other one.”

“That’s why I picked this one. She’s different from you so I guess her tastes would be different too.” He paid using his credit card and the store attendant handed him the box. The store attendant thanked him. They walked out of the store.

“So who’s the girl that you’re giving it to?”

“My girlfriend,” he smiled.

Man Gwan felt her heart shatter into a million little pieces. He has a girlfriend? How could it be? This is the worst possible news. She stood there motionless.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah…yeah, I’m fine. I didn’t know you have a girlfriend.”

“Not a lot of people do. It’s a private matter that I don’t feel the need to share with everyone.” Man Gwan forced a smile. “So, do you have anywhere you want to go? If not, I can tell my chauffeur to drive you home.”

“I’m actually meeting a friend down the street a little later. So you go ahead,” she lied.

“Okay, well, thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it.”

“Yeah, anytime.” She waved goodbye. She watched as Ah Lik’s car drove off. She sighed. All this time she thought she had a chance, but now it’s all over. She wasn’t in the mood to do anything so she just walked down the streets with her empty heart.

------------------

Ah Sze was watching TV when Alan came home holding onto a shopping bag.

“Honey, look what I got,” Alan showed her two pairs of shoes. One was pink and one was blue. “Aren’t they just adorable? They’re so tiny.”

“They are very cute, but isn’t it a little soon? I’m only one month pregnant.”

“I know, but I just couldn’t resist.”

Ah Sze held both pairs of shoes in her hands and smiled. “Our son or daughter would look very adorable in these.”

“Of course, they’ll look adorable no matter what. With our genes, how ugly can they get,” he smirked.

"Oh very ugly, with your hideous face and all," she pinched his nose.

"Yes, I am very ugly and you just love ugly guys," he chuckled.

"Yeah, they are so my type. Why do you think I married you? Okay, let's be serious now. Do you prefer a boy or a girl?”

“It doesn’t matter. Boy or girl, it’s still our child and I’ll love him/her just the same. I’ve been thinking of names even.”

“Wow, you're sure on top of things.”

“I'm even ready for the baby to be born.”

“What have you come up with?”

“If it’s a girl, I think her Chinese name should be Sum Hei Man. Her English name will be Hailey. If it’s a boy, his Chinese name should be Sum Ka Jun. His English name will be Kyle.”

“Hei Man…that sounds nice and I do like the name Hailey. As for Ka Jun…I like that too. Kyle…not bad. Okay, we’ll go with these for now. How long did it take you to come up with these names?”

“I spent all night thinking of them the day you told me that you were pregnant.”

“Wow, someone’s excited.”

“Excited? I’m more than excited. I’m going to become a father! Aren’t you excited?”

“I’m thrilled, but I’m a little worry about the whole labor process. I heard it's very painful.”

“I know it is, but once you lay eyes on your child, you’re going to forget about all the pain and it’ll be all worth it and believe me, if pain can be transferred, I’m willing to suffer through it for you.”

“Why do you always have to say such sweet things?”

“You don’t like it?”

“No, I really love it when you say these things. It really melts my heart, but sometimes it makes me feel like I don’t deserve you.”

“Don’t say that. It’s not about who deserves who. Love is not a math equation. You can’t add or subtract to make it all balance out. All we have is our love for each other and that’s all that matters. I don’t want you to think otherwise.”

“See you’re doing it again...”

“Listen to me. This is my way of showing you how much I care for you. I’m good with words, but suck at other things,” he laughed. “You show it differently. You are carrying my child for goodness sakes, and will have to endure a lot for nine months and that is something I will always cherish you for. Not every woman is willing to go through that you know. I don’t want you have any doubt whatsoever about our relationship okay?”

“Okay.”

“Promise me you won’t bring this up again?”

“Promise.” They did a pinky promise.
