Chapter 2

A Bright Idea?

The rays of the sun made its way through the gaps between the curtains and woke Alan up. He grimaced and groaned and rolled over to his right side. It was empty. He opened his eyes and saw that he was alone in bed. Where is she, he thought. He forced himself to sit up. He rubbed his temples to alleviate the throbbing pain in his head. He yawned and finally got out of bed.

Ah Sze was frying an egg when she was startled by Alan wrapping his hands around her waist. She gasped, but was relieved when she turned to see that it was only Alan. “You scared me.”

“Good morning.” He said pulling her closer making it hard for her to cook.

“Can’t you see I’m trying to make breakfast?” He rested his head on her shoulders.

“You? Make breakfast?” He chuckled. She pulled away from him.

“What is that supposed to mean? Are you saying I can’t cook?” She said annoyed.

Not wanting to upset her he replied, “Nothing, it’s just you’ve never cooked anything for me before. I was a little surprise that’s all.” He smiled. She didn’t really believe him.

“Right…now go brush your teeth and get ready for breakfast.” She returned to her cooking.

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted.

Ten minutes later, Ah Sze came out with two plates of eggs, bacon, and sausage. “Breakfast’s ready,” she called.

“Coming!” He emerged from the bedroom and joined his wife at the dining table.

“Try it and give me your honest opinion.”

“Well, it looks nice, but looks can be deceiving.” He carefully took a bite and chewed slowly.

“So,” said ah Sze who was eager for his reply.

He swallowed. “Honestly speaking, it’s not bad for a first timer, but some improvement wouldn’t hurt.”

She took a bite of her own breakfast and made a face of disgust. “Not bad? It’s uhh…kind of gross.” She drank some Orange Juice to get rid of the awful taste. “How can you eat it?”

“Even if it tasted like crap, I would eat it, only because you made it.” He took another bite, trying to prove a point. “Mmm..”

She couldn't help, but smile. “Stop eating it, it’s not good for you. If you’re really hungry? We can always call delivery or go out and eat.”

“I’m not that hungry actually. Besides, we don’t have much time. We’ve got a plane to catch in three hours. Is everything packed and ready to go?”

“Everything’s been ready since before the wedding.”

After breakfast they cleaned up and got ready to get to the airport. They were going to Paris, France for their honeymoon for two weeks.

“Ready?” Ah Sze nodded. “Then let’s go.” Alan had one duffel bag over his shoulder and dragged along a suitcase. Sze shut the door and locked it. They went down the elevators and got into a cab.

Ah Lik was working diligently when he was interrupted by a knock at the door. “Come in.” The door opened, but he didn’t even look up.

“I see you’re hard at work,” said a familiar voice. He looked up. It was his real father, Yim Tin Fan.

“Hey dad. Have a seat. I’m just trying to finish up this new proposal.” Mr. Yim pulled up a chair and sat down. “Do you need something?”

“No, I’m just trying to see how you’re doing.” He folded his hands together.

“Everything’s fine.”

“They’ve been telling me, you’ve been working very hard on this project.”

“Yeah, got to finish before the deadline,” he replied flipping through the pages.

“Now tell me, son, how long have you been working here?”

“Well, if you count the time I was a security guard then…almost eight months.”

“No, that’s not what I meant. I meant how long have you been working on this project here? When was your last break?” Ah Lik didn’t reply. “They’ve told me you’ve been here the last two days.”

“Well, time is precious. I don’t have anytime to lose.”

“Ah Lik, you need a break. You’ve been working yourself to death. It makes me wonder if you are truly over you’re relationship problems. Are you trying to make yourself busy so that you wouldn’t have to think about it?”

“Dad, I’m fine. There’s nothing to worry about. Relationships are not my concern right now.”

“Go home,” he said sternly.

“Dad…”

“I mean it son. I’m giving you a day off today. There’s still time, don’t worry. I can get other people to help you. Besides, you need to be fully rested in order to come up with a great proposal right?”

“Alright,” he reluctantly gave in. Ah Lik put all his stuff aside and Mr. Yim told the chauffeur to drive him home. It pains Mr. Yim to see his son so miserable this past month. He wished there was something he could do to see him smile again. He sighed.

“Mr. Yim,” KC called out.

“What is it KC?”

“I should be asking you sir? Is something wrong?”

“Why do you suddenly care?”

“Is there anything I can do?”

“Not unless you can make Ah Lik happy again.”

“Ah…he’s still not over Ah Sze?”

“I don’t know, but it sure seems like it.”

An idea popped into KC’s head. “I know just the thing that would cure his woes.” He captured Mr. Yim’s interest.

“What do you have in mind?”

“Just leave it to me sir.” Mr. Yim doesn’t know whether or not he should trust him.
