Chapter 20

An Undying Flame

Lilly’s birthday was coming up and she wanted to throw a huge party. She even told Ah Lik to invite his friends. This would be the perfect time to show off all the glitz and glamour. Ah Lik wasn’t sure if he should even bother inviting Alan and Ah Sze. He got the impression they weren’t too fond of Lilly, but he thought he would give it a try anyway. He went to Alan’s office and knocked on his door. Alan told him to come in.

“Have a seat, I’ll be with you in a minute,” said Alan, who was on the phone. Ah Lik sat down and waited patiently for Alan to finish his phone conversation. “Great, alright, thank you.” He hung up. “So what’s up?”

“I have something to give you,” he handed him the invitation.

“Oh? What’s this?” He opened up the envelope and read: “You are cordially invited to Lilly, Ho Ying Suet’s Birthday Gala that will be held on June 4th, 2006 at 7:00 PM at the Hilton Hotel.” He looked up at Ah Lik, “You’re inviting me to her birthday party?”

“Yeah, she told me to invite my friends, so I’m inviting you and Ah Sze.”

“I don’t know…I mean we don’t really know her.”

“I know, but all Lilly's friends are coming and it would be awkward to be the only one without friends that night.”

“I’ll talk to Ah Sze about this.”

“Okay, but I hope you two really consider it.”

-----------------

“Lilly’s Birthday Gala?”

“Yeah, Ah Lik really wants us to go.”

“Honey, you know I don’t like to go to balls or galas.”

“I know, but we should go to support Ah Lik.”

“I guess you’re right.”

“So we’re going then?”

“Sure, but what about Man Gwan?”

“Ah Lik didn’t mention her, if you want I can ask if she can go too.”

“No wait, now that I think about it, it’s better if she doesn’t go,” she remembered the little shopping incident the two had a few months ago.

“Why?”

“It’s a long story.”

---------------

Ah Lik came to look for Man Gwan at the customer service desk, but she wasn’t there. “Do you know where she went?”

“To lunch maybe? I don’t know she didn’t say, but it’s lunch time so I suppose that’s where she went,” said Gigi.

“Alright thanks.”

“Can I take a message?”

“No, I’ll handle it myself,” He left with the invitation in his hands. He could have told Gigi to give the invitation to Man Gwan, but for some reason he felt that he had to give it to her himself.

------------

When Man Gwan returned, Gigi told her that Ah Lik was looking for her.

“Did he say anything?”

“No, I asked if I could take a message, but he said he wanted to handle it himself.”

“Oh…” What could he possibly want, she wondered. Man Gwan caught a glimpse of Ah Lik wandering around in the food court. Was he looking for her? She didn’t know whether or not to call him. What if it was something urgent? She mustered up her courage and yelled, “Ah Lik!”

Ah Lik turned around when he heard his name called. When he saw that it was Man Gwan he smiled and walked towards her.

“I heard you were looking for me.”

“Yeah, I wanted to give you this.” He gave her a white envelope.

“Oh,” She accepted the invitation. “Am I being fired or something,” she joked. She opened it and saw that it was an invitation to Lilly’s birthday gala. “Who’s Lilly?”

“She’s my girlfriend.”

Girlfriend, oh how that word stung; she never knew that one word could hurt so much. Why did she even ask? Why did she even call for his attention? Worse yet, why did she have to fall for him? Now she would have to endure the misery she placed upon herself. Man Gwan felt like she wanted to run away and hide in her own little corner and cry her heart out. Ah Lik stood there waiting for her response. She could feel his eyes on her. She finally forced herself to speak, “But I don’t even know her.”

“I know, but since you’re my friend, I want to introduce you to her.”

“Just friends huh?” She smiled weakly.

“Good friends,” he corrected himself.

“Well, I’ve never been to a gala before. What will I wear?”

“I knew you would say that. Come with me.” He grabbed her arms and dragged her outside.

“Where are you taking me?”

“You’ll see.” They stopped in front of his car. “Wait here.” He opened up the trunk. Man Gwan’s eyes lit up. Inside there were five different gowns. Each had a distinct style and color. “Now you don’t have anything to worry about.”

“You don’t expect me to wear all five gowns now do you?”

“No, of course not. I didn’t know which style you preferred so I got five different kinds for you to choose from.”

“But you don’t even know my size.”

“I asked Ah Sze. No more buts, choose the one you like best. You can try them all on if you like.”

Why did Ah Lik do all this for me, Man Gwan wondered. Why does he have to be so thoughtful? Ah Lik do you know the nicer you are to me, the more I’m in pain? I’ve been trying so hard to get over you. These few months I thought my feelings for you have faded, but you just had to resurrect them.
