Chapter 21

Birthday Surprise

Alan looked at his watch and paced around. He shouted into the hall, “Ladies, are we ready yet?”

“Almost,” they both said in unison.

“Hurry, it’s already 6:50, the party starts at 7:00.”

A minute later, Ah Sze emerged from her room with a flowing backless dress. She caught Alan’s grin. “What? Do I look hideous or something?”

“No, you look as gorgeous as always. That dress looked great on the mannequin, but it looks even better on you.”

She blushed. “You look handsome yourself.”

“Do I pass for a gentleman?” He stood up straight.

“Almost,” she fixed his tie. “There, you’re a perfect gentleman now,” she smiled.

“Am I interrupting something?” They turned and saw Man Gwan wearing a strapless green dress. She felt uncomfortable with both eyes fixed on her. “Okay, I think I’m going back to change now.”

“No, wait. You look amazing,” complimented Alan.

“Wow, you pulled off that dress really well. Ah Lik sure knows how to pick.”

Man Gwan blushed. “Thanks, but it feels so uncomfortable.”

“Better get used to it now because when we get there, I bet all the guys would be staring at you,” she added.

“Okay, let’s get moving, we’re late!” They scrambled out the door and into Alan’s car.

Ah Lik was getting worried when he noticed his friends haven’t arrived yet.

“Are they even going to come,” asked a restless Lilly.

“They said they were.”

“Well, it’s rude for them to be late.”

“I know they’ll be here soon.”

“I’ll wait for five more minutes. If they don’t show up, I’m going to start the party with or without them.”

Ah Lik sighed. “Ah Lik,” called a voice. Ah Lik looked up and was happy to see that they’ve arrived.

“Finally! It took you guys long enough.”

“Sorry, it was our fault,” said Ah Sze.

“Alright, come on.” He motioned for them to follow him. Ah Lik found Lilly chatting with some of her friends. “Lilly, they’re here,” he interrupted. She excused herself from her friends.

“So you guys decided to show up after all. Thanks for making us all wait,” she rolled her eyes.

“We’re very sorry,” said Alan. Man Gwan realized that she was the B*** from the boutique. Why in the world is Ah Lik going out with her of all people?

Lilly scanned Ah Sze from head to toe. “You sure look rounder. Did you put on some weight,” she chuckled.

Ah Sze was about to explain, but Ah Lik beat her to it, “she’s pregnant.”

“Oh, that explains everything. How far along are you?”

“Three months,” she replied.

Lilly shifted her attention to Man Gwan, “You? Who invited you,” she sneered.

“I did,” said Ah Lik. “You two know each other?”

“Yeah, we have a history,”

“Great, it saves me the trouble from introducing her to you.”

“Well, take your seats everyone. The party is about to start.” She turned her backs on them.

“Excuse me,” said Ah Lik before being dragged away by Lilly.

Everyone took their seats and Lilly went up the stage. She cleared her throat and spoke into the microphone. “Welcome ladies and gentlemen. I'm proud to announce that the party has officially begun.” Everyone quieted down. “Thanks for coming tonight and for all your lovely gifts. Enjoy your meal and I hope you all will enjoy yourselves tonight. It’s going to be the best party you’ve ever had,” she beamed. Everyone with the exception of Alan, Ah Sze, and Man Gwan cheered and applauded after she finished.

Ah Lik sat at a table with his friends, but Lilly came and dragged him to sit with her and her friends. “Why can’t we sit over there?”

“Because, I want to sit with my friends and you’re my boyfriend so you sit where I sit.”

“I want to sit with my friends too,” Ah Lik protested.

“You get to see your friends all the time, but my friends traveled all the way from America.” Ah Lik sighed and reluctantly complied.

“I cannot stand her,” Ah Sze whispered.

“Neither could I, but we have to deal with it. She is after all, Ah Lik’s girlfriend,” Alan added.

“What does Ah Lik see in that B***,” added Man Gwan. They both shrugged.

“I have a surprise planned for you,” said Lilly.

“A surprise for me?”

Lilly nodded. She signaled someone at the door. The door opened and in came a group of frenzied reporters.

“What’s going on,” asked a puzzled Ah Lik. Once the reporters caught a glimpse of Ah Lik, they immediately went up to him and began firing questions at him. The party guests were all confused as to what was happening.

“Mr. Kuen, is it true that you’re dating Ms. Lilly Ho?”

“How long have you two been dating?”

“When are you going to get married?”

Questions were coming from every direction. Ah Lik didn’t know what to say or do. He turned to Lilly, “You called the press?”

“I think it’s the perfect time to let them all know that we’re dating.” Lilly replied.

“So it is true,” said one reporter.

Ah Lik didn’t want to reveal his relationship with Lilly yet, but since the secret was out, he could no longer deny it. “Yes. I’m dating Ms. Ho.”

“Do you guys plan on getting married?”

“We haven’t thought of that yet. It’s still too soon.”

“Ms. Ho, what did Mr. Kuen give you for your birthday?”

Lilly happily answered, “A new car.” The press frantically took notes and pictures. The camera flashes were blinding Ah Lik.

“Alright, we will not answer any more questions. Please leave the premises,” demanded Ah Lik. The reporters protested, but Lilly finally convinced them to leave.

Lilly saw the unhappy look on Ah Lik’s face. “I take it you don’t like what I did.”

“What were you thinking,” he said bitterly.

“We’ve been dating for five months and you’ve never told anyone about us. I was getting the feeling that you weren’t being serious with me.” All eyes were on the two as there were arguing.

“Look, I don’t want to talk about this now. Excuse me, I’m not feeling well. Enjoy the rest of your party.” He brushed passed Lilly and exited the room.

Not only was Lilly stunned, but the whole room fell silent. She had never seen Ah Lik this mad before.

Alan, Ah Sze, and Man Gwan were cheering Ah Lik on. When they saw Lilly’s defeated face, they were glad they didn't miss the party as this was a sight they've been aching to see.
