“I thought that publicizing our relationship would solidify it,” said Lilly.
“Ah Lik isn’t the type that likes everything in the open. Shouldn’t you have talked to him first? Better yet, you should have consulted me.”
“Well, what's done is done, what should I do now?”
“He’s probably very angry right now so I think you should let him have some space first, then try to apologize and make it up to him.”
-----------------
Ah Lik twirled his coffee around with a spoon. The events of last night was still fresh in his head.
Man Gwan was helping a customer find a certain location and saw Ah Lik sitting at a coffee shop staring blankly at his coffee. “Hi,” she kindly said.
He looked up from his coffee, “Hey," he replied solemnly.
“Mind if I sit down?”
“No, go ahead.”
She took a seat. “You okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine.” She knew he was probably thinking about last night.
He sighed. “You saw everything last night didn’t you?”
“Have you two spoken since then?”
“No, I think we need some time apart to reevaluate our relationship.”
“Don’t be so sad, cheer up. I’m sure everything will work out.”
“I sure hope so.”
It pained her to see him this way. His sorrow transferred over to her, but then her face lit up, “My shift is almost over. Wait for me. I know just the thing that will cheer you up.”
-------------------
After work Man Gwan took Ah Lik to the beach. “The Beach? How is this going to cheer me up?”
“Would you please be patient? Come.” She motioned. They walked to the seashore. “This is what I want you to do. I want you to yell at the top of your lungs all the things that are making you unhappy.”
“Here? Are you serious?”
“Yes, now come on. It’ll make you happier, I promise.”
Ah Lik looked around and saw that they were the only ones at the beach. “Alright, here goes. He yelled, “I’m so unhappy and frustrated! I wish she would tell me before she acted! Can't she understand that I am being serious in our relationship and there is no need to publicize it? Why doesn't she trust me? Aaaahhh...”
“Feel better?”
“You’re right, it does feel better to get it out of my system.”
“That was only part one, time for part two.”
“There’s a part two?” She nodded.
“Take off your coat.”
“What?”
“Just take it off.” He did as he was told. Man Gwan took off her shoes and walked into the water.
“What are you doing?”
“The water is great, come on in.”
What the heck was she doing, Ah Lik wondered. He took off his shoes and walked into the water carefully. “It’s cold.”
“Quit being such a baby. Ready for part two?”
“What now?”
“I want you to thrash the water around. Let out all your frustration. Pretend the water is your problem and just beat it.” She demonstrated, kicking and smacking the water.
He copied her and soon began splashing water everywhere. Man Gwan laughed and splashed him. “Hey!” He splashed back. They continued splashing back and forth forgetting the real purpose of them being there.
After a period of having fun getting each other wet, Ah Lik and Man Gwan sat on the sandy beach. “I haven’t had that much fun in a long time,” said Ah Lik exhausted.
“Me neither.”
“Thanks,” he smiled.
“There’s no need for that. We’re good friends remember?” It was great to see him smile again. I wish we could be so much more than that, but I know it’s not possible, she thought.
---------------------
Man Gwan came home soaking wet. “Why are you all wet? Was it raining,” asked Ah Sze.
“No, I just went to the beach with Ah Lik.”
“Ah Lik?”
“Yeah, he was still upset about what happened last night so I wanted to cheer him up.” She sat on the couch next to Ah Sze.
“Oh, how is he?”
“A lot better.” She paused, “can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“I heard you dated him once.”
“Yeah, I did.” Some not so fond memories resurfaced.
“Why did you break up? Was it because of Alan?” She waited for a response. Ah Sze sighed. “Sorry, I know this is personal. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
“No, it’s okay. It’s not a secret or anything. It just didn’t work out. He and I were better as friends. Ah Lik is a great guy and all. I do hope he finds his true love someday.”
“I hope his true love isn’t Lilly. I mean how can he love her?”
“Sometimes, things aren’t what they appear to be. Love is complicated.”
“But there are lots of great girls out there. He could have better.”
“Like you?” Ah Sze decided to test her.
“Yeah,” she blurted out. Uh oh, she realized she said too much. “I meant…” Her cheeks turned a rosy red.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to hide it. I’ve been observing you and I’ve noticed you’ve been really conscious of Ah Lik and really care for him. It’s not a crime to like someone.”
“So what if I like him, it’s not like we could be together.”
“Maybe you should tell him.”
“No, that’s a bad idea. He’s dating Lilly, I don’t want to be the third wheel, especially when they are having an argument right now.”
“I still think you should let him know. It’ll give you both a chance. If you don’t try, it’ll never happen. It’s not like he’s married or anything. Besides, it’ll give him a choice. If I were him I would choose you over Lilly any day.”
Man Gwan smiled. “You really think so?”
“This is a decision that only you can make, I’ll let you decide.”
“What would you do if you were me?”
“In the past, I would be just like you. I probably would never have the courage to tell him. But now, I’ve realized that you should take advantage of all your opportunities before it’s too late.”
“Thanks for your advice and uh, please don’t tell anyone, not even Alan.”
“Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.”
