“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me, Man Gwan.”
“Oh, hi.”
“Listen, Alan and Ah Sze are going out tonight, so I’ll have to eat dinner alone, but I was wondering if you could spare me that and would like to have dinner with me.”
“Sure, why not. I don’t have any plans.”
“Great. How does ‘Twin Phoenix’ sound?”
“Sounds great.”
“I’ll meet you there at seven.”
“See you then.” They hung up. That wasn’t too bad, she thought. "I hope Alan and Ah Sze won’t mind me using them,” she chuckled. She was excited and anxious at the same time. What should she wear?
------------------
Ah Lik’s doorbell rang. He wondered who it could be. He opened the door and was surprised to see Lilly. “Lilly?”
“Mind if I come in?”
“No, of course not.”
She walked in. “About the other night, we need to talk.”
“You’re right. We do.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done what I did. It was wrong of me to act before thinking. I was just worried you know? I was afraid that I would lose you.” Tears weld up in her eyes.
“You shouldn’t have to worry. Since when was I not serious about our relationship?’
“Well, you wouldn’t tell people that we’re dating. I keep feeling you didn’t really love me and it was just a fling.”
“Just a fling? You and I both know it’s more than just that.” He wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Will you forgive me?” She hugged him.
“Yes.”
Lilly grinned. Perfect. She pulled away, “To make it up to you, I got two tickets to the movies tonight.”
“Let’s go then.” He had forgotten about his “date” with Man Gwan.
-------------------------
Man Gwan was dressed in her best and waited for Ah Lik at the “Twin Phoenix” Restaurant. She kept checking her hair and makeup every few minutes, afraid that it was ruined or something. She was there early. When it hit seven, Ah Lik still hadn’t arrived yet. Minutes kept ticking by, but there was no sign of Ah Lik. She called him, but his phone was off. She began to worry. What if something happened to him? All she could do was wait. The waiter stopped by and asked if she was ready to order. She told him, she was waiting for someone, but to get her another glass of water. She was getting really hungry, but wanted to wait for Ah Lik before eating. She finished three glasses of water hoping that it will fill up her stomach for the time being. Two hours later, she was still waiting.
The movie finished and they walked out of the theatre. “That was a great movie wasn’t it? I’m so happy the leads got together in the end,” said Lilly.
“Yeah, it was so sweet that the girl did all that for him.” He turned on his phone and noticed that he had several missed calls that were from the same number. It was Man Gwan. He suddenly remembered that he was supposed to meet her for dinner. He immediately called her and hoped she wasn’t still waiting. “Hey, it’s me. My phone was off because I was seeing a movie. Sorry I forgot to tell you that I can’t make it.”
“Oh, that’s okay. I didn’t show up either. I called you to tell you that a couple of my friends came over so we went out instead,” she lied.
“Oh that’s great, I was worried that you might be still waiting and I would feel so bad if you were,” he chuckled.
“Oh, I would never wait this long,” she chuckled. “You went to see a movie?”
“Yeah, good news, Lilly and I are on good terms again so we went to see a movie together.”
“Well, that’s great. I’m happy for the both of you. Sorry my friends are calling, got to go.” She hung up rapidly to avoid hearing anymore things that would break her heart. “Check please,” she told the waiter. When she went outside it was pouring. Great, just great, she thought. As if she didn’t have enough bad luck already. She tried to hail a cab, but each one kept driving passed her.
Alan was nearby. “Yes, I bought the blueberry one you wanted. I’m coming home soon. Love you too.” He hung up the phone and saw Man Gwan walking in the rain, “Man Gwan,” he called. She looked up at him. He quickly covered her with his umbrella. “What are you doing out in the rain?”
“I was…having dinner.”
“You’re soaked. I’m heading home. Come on let’s go.”
------------------
“Honey, I bought the Jell-O, you wanted.” Ah Sze came out of her room and took the bag from him.
“Man Gwan? Why are you all wet?”
“She didn’t have an umbrella.”
“Hurry, and get yourself dry before you get sick,” said a concerned Sze. Man Gwan marched into her room and changed into dry clothing. She walked out with a towel on her head. “You want some Jell-O? There’s some more in the bag.”
“Jell-O?”
“Yeah, I was craving for it. You know pregnant women have strange cravings,” she chuckled.
“I’m starving is there anything to eat?”
“You haven’t eaten? Alan said you were having dinner.”
“I was…but, the person I was waiting for didn’t show up.”
“Oh, then let me fix something up for you.”
“No, it’s okay. I can do it myself. You’re pregnant. I don’t want you to be doing so much. Enjoy your Jell-O.” She went into the kitchen and opened up the fridge.
--------------------
Ah Sze woke up in the middle of the night. She was feeling hungry. She woke Alan up. “What’s wrong? Is it time?”
“No silly, I’m only three months pregnant. I’m just hungry that’s all.”
“In the middle of the night?”
“Yeah, didn’t you know pregnant women are almost constantly hungry?”
“Alright, let’s go out and find you something to eat.” He helped her out of bed and they went into the kitchen together. Alan started taking out different food items, “Instant Cup Noodles?” She shook her head. “Peanut butter sandwich?” She shook her head, “Frozen pizza?”
“Nope,”
“How about garden salad?”
“No.”
He went through their entire food supply, but she didn’t want any of it. “Well, that’s all we have. What is it that you’re craving for?”
Ah Sze thought long and hard, “I know, stinky tofu.”
Alan grimaced and pinched his nose. “Eeeeww, stinky tofu?”
“That’s what I feel like eating right now.”
“Isn’t there something else? Anything else?” She shook her head. “Fine, I’ll get you some stinky tofu.”
“Thanks honey,” she kissed him.
------------------
He came home holding onto his nose. “Here’s your stinky tofu.”
“Oh come on, it’s not that bad.” She took the bag from him. “Mmmm…smells so good.” She took one out and began eating. “Haven’t had these in a long time.” Alan stood ten feet away from her. “Do you really have to stand that far?” Alan nodded. “You should try some. I bet you’ll like it after just one bite.” She approached him.
He moved away, “No. No way. I’m not going anywhere near it. Get it away from me.”
“Oh fine. You baby.” She went back to the couch and finished her tofu. “That was so good.” Ah Sze went to wash her hands. He stood right where he was still covering his mouth. “Hmm…I guess you never want to come near me again. Oh well, you can sleep out here then.” She walked into the room.
Alan immediately uncovered his mouth, “No, wait. Now that would be taking it a little to far, don’t you think?”
“Well, you said so yourself. You said you don’t want to come anywhere near the horrible smell and right now I reek of it. So I’m only doing you a favor.” She went in the room and shut the door.
“Honey, I didn’t mean it that way.” He opened the door and went inside. “The tofu smells bad, not you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah I’ll prove it to you.” He held his breath and kissed her. “See,” he said trying hard to keep his composure.
“I can’t believe you just did that. If it were me I would be running to the bathroom by now.”
“This just proves that no matter what, I’ll always love you. Not even a couple of foul smelling tofu can get in the way,” he smirked. He tried kissing her again, but she stopped him.
“Let me brush my teeth and rinse my mouth first, before you pass out.” She chuckled.
