Ah Sze and Man Gwan went shopping together. They entered a knitting store. “Are you going to knit something for Alan?”
“How did you know?”
“Well, who else would you knit for?”
She smiled, “his birthday is coming up and I want to knit him a sweater.”
“Oh, I see. He’ll be so happy to know that you’re knitting him something.”
“You better not tell him.”
“I know, it’s a surprise.”
Ah Sze looked through the different colored yarns. “I think blue would be nice, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, blue sounds good.” Ah Sze picked up the blue yarn bundle and paid for it. The exited the store. “So how is it going between you and Ah Lik? Any progress?”
“How can there be progress? He’s still dating that b*tch.”
“You still haven’t told him yet?” She shook her head. Ah Sze’s phone rang. “Hello?” It was Alan.
“Where are you right now? Remember that you have an appointment with Dr. Chan today?”
“Yes, I know. I’m by the café we always go to.”
“Okay, I’m coming to pick you up.” They hung up.
“Was that Alan?” Ah Sze nodded.
“He’s coming to pick us up. Let’s sit over there to wait for him.”
Ten minutes later Alan arrived. He helped put their shopping bags into the car, but there was one bag that Ah Sze wouldn’t let him take. “What’s in that bag that’s so important?”
“Female stuff,” she lied. Alan just accepted her answer and they were on their way.
“Sorry Man Gwan, I would take you home first, but we’re running a little late to Ah Sze’s doctors appointment. You’re going to have to come with us.”
“It’s okay. I don’t mind.”
--------------------
Man Gwan waited patiently while Alan and Ah Sze were inside with a doctor.
“How’s the baby Dr.?”
“Very healthy and beautiful.”
“Do you two want to know the sex of your future child?” They nodded. “Congratulations it’s a baby girl.”
“Now we can finally settle on a name,” said Alan.
“Yes, Hailey it is,” said Ah Sze.
-------------------
They came out and Man Gwan sprang up curious to know about her little second cousin. “So how’s the baby?”
“The doctor said she’s doing really well.”
“It’s a girl?” They nodded. “Awesome! I get to dress her up and play dolls with her,” she said excitedly.
--------------------
Ah Sze used all her spare time to knit a sweater for Alan. She had to be careful so that Alan wouldn’t see her knitting. One night when she was knitting, Alan suddenly went inside the room. Ah Sze quickly shoved the unfinished sweater into the bag and placed it in the closet. “Ever heard of knocking?”
“What? I never had to knock before,” he proclaimed.
“Well, it’s a new rule.”
“Okay,” he said puzzled. He understood that pregnant women could act a little weird sometimes and it was easy for them to get irritated, so most of the time he obeyed her. He headed to the closet.
“Wait! What are you doing?”
“I’m going to shower. I just want to get my clothes.”
“I’ll get it for you.”
“I can get it myself.”
“No stop! Let me get it for you.” She pushed him aside and quickly grabbed a few articles of clothing from the closet and threw it at him. “There. You can go shower now.”
Alan was beyond confused. “What has gotten into you?”
“Nothing. I thought you were going to shower.”
“I am.” He scratched his head and went into the bathroom. The more he thought about it, the more suspicious he was of her. She was up to something, but what could it be?
When Ah Sze was sure that Alan was no where in sight, she took out the bag and began knitting again. That was a close one, she thought.
-------------------
In the middle of the night, Alan looked over at his wife to make sure that she was sound asleep. He carefully crept out of bed and made his way to the closet, making the tiniest movements possible so that he wouldn’t wake her up. He opened up the closet door and looked through it. He found a bag and opened it up. Inside there was a little doll with a pink dress. This was what she was keeping from him? Odd. He placed it back into the bag and closed the closet door. He slowly walked back to bed and went to sleep. He didn’t know that Ah Sze wasn’t really asleep yet. She saw everything and smiled.
----------------------
“Wow! You’re like ninety percent done. How do you work so fast?”
“I don’t have a job remember.”
“It looks great so far. I’m sure Alan will love you to pieces when he sees it.”
“You know he was suspicious.”
“He was? Did he find out?”
“No, but it was a close one. One night, he thought I was asleep so he went into the closet to peek, but good thing I had a feeling he would do that, so I replaced the sweater with the doll you bought.”
Man Gwan laughed, “Good one.”
“I know, he never would have guessed.”
--------------------------
One month later, it was Alan’s birthday. Ah Sze pretended that she had forgotten about it. Even his cousin and best friend, Ah Lik pretended to not know. They all told him that they were busy that night. He felt a little disappointed that his wife and best friend would totally ignore that it was his birthday. He didn’t want to go out to celebrate alone because it would make him feel like a loser. He decided to head home, go to bed, and forget that it was even his birthday. He unlocked the front door and stepped in. It was pitch black. He tried turning on the lights, but they refused to turn on. The light was messing with him too? What is this? Pick on Alan day, he thought. All of a sudden he sees two people emerge from the darkness holding a birthday cake with candles already lit. They sang, “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Alan, happy birthday to you.” They threw confetti at him.
“Wow, this is for me?”
“Yep, Ah Sze planned all this,” said Ah Lik.
“I thought you three forgot that it was my birthday today.”
“How can we forget?”
“Thanks so much for this.”
“Don’t thank us, thank your lovely wife,” said Man Gwan.
“Where is she?” Ah Sze walked out holding a box in her hands.
“Happy Birthday Alan, this is for you.” She handed him the box.
He opened it up. It was a knitted blue sweater. “You made this?” His face was in utter shock and joy.
She nodded. “You like it?”
“I love it. It’s the best gift ever!” He put his stuff aside and hugged her. “Thank you.” He kissed her. Man Gwan and Ah Lik cheered. They broke apart. “Thank you, all of you for making this my best birthday ever!”
