“It can’t be bought. My wife knitted it.”
“Aww, that’s so sweet. Too bad my girlfriend can’t knit.” He chuckled. “Anyway see you around.”
Alan walked into his office when his phone rang. “Hello? Oh hey honey.”
“I’m grocery shopping right now. What do you want for dinner tonight?’
“Hmm…I’m craving pot roast tonight, but I’m fine with any other dishes and appetizers.”
“Okay, great.”
“Oh can you also get an apple pie for dessert?”
“Sure.”
“Thanks, and be careful, you’re pregnant, don’t forget that.”
“I know. I can take care of myself. For Hailey’s sake, I will never let anything happen to myself.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Alan looked at his watch, “Actually, I still think I’m going to pick you up. I don’t want you to be carrying all the grocery by yourself.”
“Don’t you have to work?”
“I can take off if it’s something important. Making sure you’re safe is important.”
She smiled, “Okay, I’ll see you soon then. Love you.”
“Love you too.” He hung up.
Ah Sze finished purchasing all the ingredients that she needed for that night’s dinner. She looked in her bag and realized that she was forgetting something. She forgot the apple pie. There was a bakery across the street. The street looked empty so she crossed it.
“Of course we can go clubbing. That’s an awesome idea.” Lilly was chatting on her phone while speeding down the street. “What’s that song you’re listening to? It’s on right now. Great, I’ll turn my radio on.” She reached down for the dial, but kept her speed. Ah Sze was halfway across the street and noticed a car speeding straight down the roadway. Lilly looked up and saw a pedestrian right in front of her. She dropped her phone and slammed on the brakes. The tires screeched, but her car was going way too fast. It failed to stop in time and rammed into Ah Sze. She flew onto Lilly’s car hood and rolled off onto the floor. The front of Lilly’s car was stained with a crimson red. Lilly was in shock. She sat motionless. Her face was as pale as a ghost. Her hands were trembling in fear. She panicked and drove away quickly.
Alan parked his car on the side of the curb by the marketplace. He called Ah Sze to tell her that he was here. There was no answer. Odd, he thought. He tried calling again. He couldn’t get through. He went to look for her. He saw a group of people gather around the street and decided to see what was going on. People were blocking his view. “Excuse me, what’s going on,” he asked a bystander.
“There has been an accident. A pregnant woman was hit by a car.”
When he heard the key word pregnant, his ears immediately perked up. Could it be? “No, please, don’t let it be,” he muttered under his breath. He squeezed himself through the crowd and finally reached the front. To his utter shock and horror, what he prayed wasn’t true has suddenly become his worst nightmare. “Ah Sze!” He quickly made his way to her body. There was a pool of blood surrounding her. He held her lifeless body in his arms, “Ah Sze! No, this can’t be happening! Ah Sze, wake up, can you hear me? It’s me Alan.” He forced himself to hold back his tears, but he didn’t have the willpower to do it. Tears fell freely. “No, please, please stay with me.” Blood trickled down her face. “Somebody call the ambulance!” People were still in shock so they just stood there. “What are you people doing? Call!” He decided to take this situation into his own hands. He lifted her up and carried her to his car. He raced down the streets. “Move out of the way!” He kept repeating. While running, he kept speaking to her. “Please, stay with me. You’re going to be fine. I’m taking you to the hospital. Please hold on for a little bit longer. Tears kept streaming down his face. He finally reached his car and placed her into the front seat and buckled her up. He pressed on the gas pedals hard and sped down to the nearest hospital. While he was driving, he held her hands and kept checking back on her. Blood continued to pour down her face. His hands trembled as he drove. “You’re going to make it, just hold on. Please.” When he finally reached the front of the hospital, he quickly carried her and rushed inside. The doctors and nurses quickly came to his aid.
“We’ll take it from here,” said one of the doctors. They placed her on a gurney and pushed her into the emergency room.
One of the nurses saw Alan’s hand covered in blood and attended to him, “Sir, are you okay? Your hands…”
“I’m fine. It’s my wife that you should be attending to, not me!” He screamed at her.
“We’re going to do the best we can.”
Alan saw some nurses idly standing around. He was furious. He ran up to them and shouted, “Go in there and help! You’re not getting paid to stand around! Go in there now!” He was getting out of control. He started to push and pull them to get them to act. Soon, security guards came to restrain him. They held him still.
“Calm down sir, they are doing everything they possibly can to save your wife. Acting like this will not better the situation and will only make it worse since you are slowing them from doing their work.”
Alan came to his senses and calmed down. They released him. He went down on his knees and sobbed harder than he ever did in his life.
His blue sweater was soaked in her blood.
