He slowly looked up at him. His eyes were swollen. “She’s still in the emergency room.”
“How could this happen? And the baby?”
Alan was sadden even more, “As of now, I don’t know.”
The rest of the family arrived in panic. They were questioning Alan, but he didn’t have any answers.
One of the nurses came out. Alan immediately went up to her, “How is she?”
“The doctor will tell you as soon as he’s done,” he quickly brushed passed him.
A few seconds later, the doctor appeared.
“Doctor, how is my wife?”
He shook his head and sighed, “She has lost a lot of blood. We gave her a blood transfusion, but she’s still in critical condition. We’re going to perform surgery and because she’s pregnant, it’s going to be really complicated. The good thing is that she’s six months pregnant so we can try to take the baby out. Although it would be premature, it might have a chance of survival. However, we can’t guarantee the survival of both the mother and child. If we try to save the mother, the child might not survive and vice versa. So as her family members, you would have to sign documentation on that matter just in case either one of them doesn't make it.”
The family stood static, trying to absorb every single word the doctor said. This was a hard decision to make, but Alan had no doubts who he wanted the doctor to save first. “Save my wife, if you can only save one of them, please save her.”
“We will do the best we can. Please follow the nurse to sign a couple of forms and we will begin the operation immediately.”
Alan signed the forms and they pushed Ah Sze into the operating room.
“It’s my fault. I should never have let her go grocery shopping alone. If I had arrived earlier, maybe none of this would have happened. If something happened to her, I could never forgive myself.”
“It’s not your fault. If it was anybody’s fault it would be that careless driver. How could he/she be so irresponsible? Hitting someone and driving off?”
Each of the sisters cried on their husband’s shoulders. Lang Po prayed that her granddaughter would be alright.
Ah Lik and Man Gwan came running in, “How is she? How is Ah Sze?” He shook Alan, but he didn’t respond.
“She’s in surgery right now,” said David.
“What happened? All I heard was she’s been in an accident,” said Man Gwan.
“It was a hit and run. We still don’t know who the driver was.”

Lilly drove to a remote location and frantically dialed her uncle’s number. “Hello,” her voice trembled.
“Lilly? What’s going on? Why is your voice like that?”
“I think I might have killed someone.”
“What?”
“It was an accident I swear. I was driving and this woman was in front of me. I couldn’t stop in time. I think she was pregnant,” she cried.
“Pregnant? Don’t tell me you were the one responsible for Ah Sze’s hit and run.”
“That was Ah Sze? Oh man, what am I going to do?”
“You fled the scene and that’s a big crime.”
“I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. Uncle can you help me?
“Did anyone see you hit her?
“I don’t know it all happened so fast.”
“Alright, here’s what I want you to do. First, get rid of all the evidence. How’s the car?”
“There’s some minor damage, but her blood is all over the hood.”
“Clean it up, but be careful not to leave fingerprints. After you’ve cleaned it I want you to park the car in a secluded place, but make sure no one sees you. I want you to call the police and report that your car has been stolen. Is there anything you don’t understand?”
“No, I know what to do.”
“Get to it hurry!” Lilly hung up and quickly began to destroy the evidence.
--------------------------
The operation lasted five hours. No one left the hospital. The doctor came out and they all hoped it was good news. “Congratulations, you have a new daughter.”
They were a bit relieved, but the news didn’t calm Alan down one bit, “But what about my wife?”
“She’s in a stable condition right now, but we’ll be monitoring her in the ICU. However, don't count on her waking anytime soon. She has suffered some major internal bleeding and massive trauma to the head. We don't know when or if she will awaken, but don't lose hope. There have been cases like this before. As for your daughter we have to send her to NICU(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)for further care and treatment .”
“Can we see her?”
“You’ll have to wait until we transfer her to her room.”
“Thank you Doctor.”
“You’re welcome.”
Once they transferred Ah Sze to a room in the ICU, her family and friends went in to see her. There were monitors and tubes everywhere. Her head was dressed up in white bandage and she was breathing through an oxygen mask. Alan sat alongside the bed and held her hand. “Ah Sze, it’ me, Alan. I’m so sorry, if only I’ve been there. If only I prevented you from going to the market. It’s all my fault. What kind of husband am I? I couldn’t even be there when you needed me most. Remember how you used to love pinching me and smacking me whenever you were mad? If you wake up, I’ll let you hit me as many times as you like. Wake up so that you can punish me, yell at me, or hit me. I’ll be at your total mercy. Please hang in there. You can do it. Don’t give up. I love you, we all love you.” He kissed her hand. Alan moved aside so that David could talk to her.
“My precious daughter, I never thought it would come to this. Be strong, we know you can get through this. We’ll support you all the way.” David wiped away his tears.
Chris was the next one to speak, “Yee mui (2nd younger sister), remember when we were little the three of us made a pact to stick together and grow old together no matter what? You better not have forgotten that. CoCo and I are holding you to that. Please, get better soon.” Martin handed her a tissue. She blew her nose.
“Yee Ka Jei (2nd older sister), remember the bet we made when we were younger? We bet that dai ka jei (big sister), would be the first to have a boyfriend, the first to get married, the first to have kids, and the first to die? We’ve already lost the bet for the first to get married and the first to have kids. We can’t lose the last one. You have to make it. You’ve got to.”
“It’s me Man Gwan. I know we’ve only known each other for a short time, but during the few months I got to know you and spend time with you, you taught me a lot. You were there for me when no one else was. You gave me the courage to believe in myself. Now it's your turn. You must use that courage to stand back on your feet. You are a great person and a great friend. I’m so glad that I decided to come to Hong Kong. If I hadn’t, I would never have known you and I wouldn’t know what I’ve been missing. Thank you for being my friend.”
“Ah Sze, remember me? I’ll let you guess. I’m the funny one,” he tried to chuckle. “Give up? It’s me Ah Lik. Remember when we used to play video games together and you would always beat me. Wake up because I want a rematch. Wake up so it can be like the old days with the three of us laughing and playing together. Ah Sze we’ll all be waiting. You’ll always have our support, but you must gather up all your strength and battle this. We can only do so much. The rest is up to you.”
“Don’t forget, you are no longer just a daughter, a friend, or a wife. You are also a mother now. You don’t want your daughter to be without a mother now do you?” Martin added.
They decided to leave Alan and Ah Sze alone. He must have so much more to say to her. They went to the NICU to look at the new addition to the family.
