“That’s my little niece,” said Chris.
“She’s so tiny and red,” said Jason.
“Of course silly, she’s only 24 weeks old. She’s not fully developed yet.”
“My poor great granddaughter must feel very uncomfortable. Look at all those tubes and wires.”
“The doctor said that she will have to stay in the hospital for quite some time to make sure she develops properly,” said David.
“When can we hold her,” asked Chris.
“We can’t, not just yet, but tomorrow we can touch her through the incubator.”
“Have they thought of a name yet,” asked Martin.
“I don’t know. I haven’t asked them,” said David. “I think that is the last thing on Alan’s mind right now.”
“How could something like this happen to them? Alan and Ah Sze were so sweet together. Everything was going so well too. They were about to start a family. Tragedy always finds the worst time to strike,” said CoCo.
“I hope the person that did this rots in hell,” Lang Po replied furiously.
-----------------------
Alan was by his wife’s side the entire day and night. He hadn’t slept at all. He didn’t leave her side even once. Most of Ah Sze’s family members went home for the day. David and Man Gwan stayed. They stood outside of her room. From the outside they could see Alan through the window. It pained them to see Alan like this. All the heartache and anguish was written on his face.
“Has he eaten,” asked Man Gwan.
“No, he didn’t even leave the room.”
Man Gwan sighed. “He can’t keep doing this.” She walked into the room. “Alan, you’ve been here the whole day. Go get something to eat. I’ll watch over her.”
“I’m not hungry.” His voice lacked energy. He was disheveled and unshaven.
“You need to eat something. I’ll get you a sandwich or something.”
“I said I’m not hungry!”
“Do you think that by just staying by her side that she would miraculously wake up? It doesn’t work that way. You acting like this will not make the situation better. You’ll only make people worry. We already have a lot on our minds right now. Do you want us to worry about you too? What would Ah Sze think? I’m sure that she would not approve of what you’re doing right now. Look at you; you look like you have just gotten out of jail or something. Get your act together!” Man Gwan stormed out of the room.
Alan went to the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. Man Gwan was right. He looked like a convict. So much has changed in just one day. He thought about what Man Gwan said and finally decided to leave the hospital. He went home for a shower, shaved, and put on some clean clothes. He returned to the hospital and saw Man Gwan. “So you finally took my advice.”
“You were right. Ah Sze wouldn’t be happy if she saw me like that.”
-----------------------
“These were the items we found on your wife after the accident,” said a nurse. She handed him a Ziploc bag with her wallet, cell phone, and wedding ring. They were covered in blood. He took her belongings and sat on a bench. He took her wallet out from the bag and opened it up. Inside, there was a wedding photo of them together. They were so happy. He never knew something as simple as a smile could mean so much. He brushed the photo with his fingers and his eyes weld up in tears again. He placed the wallet back into the bag and took out her ring. He wanted to get her a ring with a larger diamond, but she insisted on a smaller one, saying that the bigger diamonds would weigh down her fingers. He knew that she only said that because she didn’t want him to spend so much money. He clenched his fist together. Something must be done. He can’t let her just lay there. He went back into her room and held on to her hand. “Don’t worry, I’m going to find out who did this to you and bring you justice.” He kissed her hand and stormed out of the room catching Man Gwan by surprise.
“Where are you going?”
“To find the person who did this to her.”
“Wait for me.” She went after him.
-----------------------
He went into his car. “Let me come with you. I want to know who did this,” said Man Gwan.
“Fine, get in.” She entered the car.
“How do you intend on finding the driver?”
“I’m going to go back to the scene to see if there were any witnesses.”
When they got to the scene of the crime, Alan and Man Gwan asked everyone nearby if they had seen the accident. Everyone shook their heads.
“Well, that was helpful,” said Man Gwan.
“We got to keep trying. I’m sure someone must have seen it.”
“If they have, they probably don’t want to say it. I think they don’t want to get involved in the investigation so I don’t think anyone will be willing to talk.”
“What are we going to do then? We can’t just sit here and let the driver roam free.”
“I know, but we have to be patient. The cops are investigating this also. I’m sure if they find any leads they will contact us.”
“Fine, we’ll post notices around this area and if anyone knows anything they could call us.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
------------------------
One week became two weeks and still there were no leads. Alan was beginning to get frustrated. He got one call, but it was a false alarm. “Damn it!” He slammed the phone down and pushed everything off his desk. “Two weeks and still nothing at all!”
“Calm down,” said Man Gwan.
“Calm down? You expect me to calm down when my wife is in the hospital because some idiot was so careless and decided to just run over a pregnant woman? He probably doesn’t even regret what he did. If he had a conscience he wouldn’t have run from the scene. Why is it that the innocent people suffer while the guilty run free? I hate this world! It’s so unfair!” He slammed his hand on his desk.
“I know you’re frustrated. I am too. We all want to catch this culprit as soon as possible. We’re doing the best we can.”
“I think we’re not trying hard enough.”
“I think you’ve done more than enough. I know you still feel guilty for what happened to Ah Sze, but it was not your fault. You’re trying to catch the driver as fast as you can so your conscience can rest easier. You still feel that you’re responsible. These past two weeks you haven’t even been to work and you spent all day trying to figure everything out. What more can you do? I’m sure Ah Sze doesn’t blame you for what happened. It was all an accident. No one expected it. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
“There has to be more I can do.”
“Yeah actually there is. Have you even seen your daughter since she was born?” Alan didn’t respond. “You don’t even need to answer the question. I know the answer is no. The question is why Alan? She’s your daughter, but you haven’t even taken one look at her.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if I see her, I will just be reminded of Ah Sze and our life together, all the memories we shared, and all the love we had for each other. I just can’t take it. It’s too painful.” He tried hard to hold back his tears.
“But she’s your daughter. You can’t avoid her forever.”
“I know. I don’t plan on avoiding her forever. It’s just now is not the time.”
