========================

Alan received a phone call from the hospital in the middle of the night. He thought it was about Ah Sze, but it was actually about his daughter. She had a high fever. Alan thanked the hospital for telling him, but told them that he won’t be able to come to the hospital to see her. He physically could, but still wasn’t mentally ready. He sat in the darkness of his room and closed his eyes and reopened them. When he opened up his eyes he saw Ah Sze in front of him. “Ah Sze?” The room suddenly got brighter.

She gave him a gentle smile. “Yeah, it’s me.” He got up and gave her a hug.

“Oh how much I missed you.” He held her tightly.

“I missed you too.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. None of it was your fault. I never once blamed you for it.”

“Still, I wasn’t there for you.”

“Alan,” she pulled away. “Listen to me. It’s not your fault alright? Stop blaming yourself.”

“Am I dreaming?”

“It can be as real as you make it.” She put her hands underneath his jaw. “I know you’ve been neglecting your fatherly duties.”

“It’s all because of you.”

“No, Alan. You’re being selfish. You worry that you will be hurt, but what about me? What about Hailey? Remember, you wanted to name her Hailey, Sum Hei Man. You promised that you would take care of me and our children. Have you forgotten already?”

“No, everything I’ve promised you, I kept it in here,” he put his hand to his heart.

“Really? Because it seems you have forgotten or else you would be with Hailey right now. Do you love me?”

“You know I do. More than anything.”

“Alan, if you really love me as much as you say you do, you would not have abandoned our daughter. She’s our daughter, a part of you and me. You should love her as much as you love me.”

“I’m sorry, it’s just…”

“There you go again.” She stroked his cheeks. “I know you’ve been through a lot, but this is just a roadblock that we must go through.” She leaned in and kissed him, “I love you.”

Alan opened his eyes and she was gone. He looked around and found that he was still in bed. It had all been a dream. He looked at his watch and it was three in the morning. He quickly got dressed and drove to the hospital. He asked the nurse where the NICU was and she told him. He put on scrubs, opened the door, and went in. He tried looking for the name tag of his daughter, but then realized that he hadn’t officially given her a name yet. He found one incubator with the last name Sum and a date of birth that matched his daughter’s. That must be her. He looked through the glass of the incubator. She was asleep. Her hands and feet were so tiny. She was so adorable. He couldn’t believe he missed out on seeing his daughter for so long. How stupid he must have been, he thought. Ah Sze was right, he should love Hailey as much as he loves her. She was a part of both of them.

As far as he could tell, her ears resembled his and her nose looked like Ah Sze. She was a beautiful baby.

“Are you her father,” asked a nurse who had just walked in.

“Yeah,”

“I haven’t seen you before.”

“I’ve been busy,” he lied.

“Well, it’s great that you finally came. Have you thought of a name yet? She has been known as the Sum baby for a long time. I’m sure she would prefer an actual name,” she chuckled.

“Yeah, her name is Hailey, Sum Hei Man,” he smiled.

“Pretty name, I like it.” She handed him a form to fill out. “Just fill this out with her full name so she can officially get a birth certificate.”

--------------------

Alan spent the night at the hospital to watch over Hailey. A doctor came in to check on her, “Mr. Sum? I’m surprised to see you here,” said Dr. Chan.

“I know, I’ve been neglecting my duties as a father, but I promise I’ll never do that again.”

“Good,” she looked at Hailey’s charts. “So she finally has a name huh? Sum Hei Man, Hailey. That’s a very adorable name. Now I don’t have to call her the Sum baby,” she chuckled.

“How is she doing Dr. Chan?”

“She’s making remarkable progress. I’m sure that after a few more weeks she can go home.”

“Really?”

“Yep, she’ll get to be like all the other babies.”

Alan sighed, “I’m sure my wife would be happy to hear that.”

“I’ve heard about her. Don’t worry; I’m sure she’ll wake up soon. Have a little faith.”
