======================
Early the next morning, Alan received an anonymous phone call. The man said that he has valuable information and to meet him at the local church. Alan hoped that this man has the information he has been searching for. Alan immediately went to the church to look for this mysterious man. He was nowhere in sight. Then, there was a man who signaled him to go outside. He followed him.
“Are you Alan Sum?”
“Yes, are you the one that called me?” He nodded. “Great, what information can you give me regarding the accident?”
“I witnessed it.”
“You did? Why didn’t you come forward when the police where interrogating?”
“I was scared. I didn’t want to get involved.”
“What made you change your mind?”
“Your devotion, I was touched by your dedication and devotion to your wife. I felt like I had to do something.”
“Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me. What did you see?”
“I saw a black BMW sedan with a female driver. She was speeding and talking on the phone.”
“That B*itch, excuse my language. Do you recognize her?”
“Yeah, it’s her,” he took out a magazine with Ah Lik and Lilly on the cover. He pointed to Lilly.
“Her?” Alan couldn’t believe. Of all people, it had to be someone he knew.
“You know her?”
“More than I want to.” He held the magazine. “Are you a hundred percent sure that it’s her.”
“I’m positive.”
“Listen, I need you to come to the police station with me to testify.”
“Are you kidding? I lied in the interrogation earlier. If I go back there, I’m going to get penalized.”
“You weren’t lying for a malicious cause; just explain to them your reasoning. It’s not too late. Please, she needs to be punished for what she did. My wife deserves justice. She’s been in a coma ever since and I have a daughter who’s in the NICU because of her. Can your conscience rest knowing that you have valuable information that will implement justice, but you kept it to yourself? I’ll go with you.”
The man stood silently and thought about it. “Fine, I’ll go to the police station with you tomorrow. I can’t today. Is that okay with you?”
“Yes, thank you. My family thanks you.”
----------------------
“You found a witness?” Man Gwan said surprised.
“Yeah, he’s going to meet me at the police station later today to testify.”
“Does he know who did it?”
“Lilly.”
“Lilly? As in Lilly Ho?”
“Yes as in Ah Lik’s B*itch.”
“Oh my God. How could she?”
“I would like to know why she’s so F*ing stupid. She was not only speeding, but also talking on her F*ing cell phone.”
“Do you think Ah Lik knows?”
“If he did and kept this from all of us, I’m going to have to seriously reevaluate our friendship.”
“From day one, I knew that Lilly was up to no good. Maybe you should talk to Ah Lik first, since Lilly is his girlfriend.”
“Talk to him? Like what? Ask him for permission to arrest his girlfriend? He loves her so much that he probably wouldn’t believe it if I told him that she was the one responsible.”
“But he’s going to be so heartbroken to see Lilly arrested. This is going to be the second time he loses the girl.”
“Heartbroken? I’m the one that’s heartbroken. His agony doesn’t even compare to mine. Why are you defending Ah Lik anyways? You like him?”
“I…”
“Don’t answer that. At this point it no longer matters. I’ve made up my mind. She must pay for what she did.” He went out of his apartment and slammed the door shut.
-------------------------
Alan waited for the witness in front of the police station. A couple of hours went by, but he still hadn’t arrived yet. Alan was getting worried that he might have changed his mind. He paced around trying to figure out what the next course of action is. He waited for another hour, but there was still no sign of him. He stomped on an empty aluminum can and kicked it. The can went flying into the air and landed before Man Gwan. Alan saw Man Gwan, but turned around. She walked up to him. “Alan,”
“Don’t try to convince me to change my mind.”
“I’m not. I’m here to support you. Is he here yet?” Alan shook his head. “Have you tried calling him?”
“He refused to provide me with any contact information.”
“He stood you up.”
He scoffed, “you think?”
“What are you going to do?”
“What I always do, keep trying.”
--------------------
Lilly got into Ah Lik’s car. “So where are we going for lunch?”
“Actually I’m thinking that we try something different this time,” he smiled. He drove to the hospital.
“What are we doing here?”
“Visiting Ah Sze and my goddaughter.”
Lilly’s eyes widened, “But…But,” she stuttered, “I don’t even know her well enough. You go in. I’ll wait for you in the car.”
“Come on, what are you afraid she’s going to bite or something,” he chuckled. He unfastened his seat belt, got out of the car and went around and opened the door for Lilly. “Let’s go, as the future, godmother, you should definitely see your goddaughter.” He pulled her out and dragged her in.
Inside the hospital, Lilly lagged behind, but Ah Lik dragged her. They went to see Hailey first. They put on scrubs and gloves and went inside the NICU. “There she is, your future goddaughter. Isn’t she just adorable?”
“Yeah…” Hailey started to cry.
“Oh, she’s crying. Don’t cry Hailey. Everything’s going to be alright.” He put his hands inside the incubator and gently stroked her face. Hailey stopped crying. “She likes it. Lilly you try it.”
“What? Me?”
“Yeah, come on.” He took her hands and slipped it through the incubator. She stroked her cheeks. “Yeah, gently, you’ve got it.” Hailey cried again. Lilly quickly retracted her hands.
“I guess she doesn’t like me.”
“Of course she does. Why wouldn’t she like you? She’s probably just hungry or something.
She hates me because of what I did to her mother, Lilly thought.
They went out and removed their scrubs. “Alright, we’ve visited Hailey, let’s go now,” said Lilly, eager to leave.
“Not yet, we still need to visit Ah Sze.”
“Ah Sze is not my anybody, why do I have to?”
“How can you say that? Even people at the mall who have never spoken to Ah Sze have come to visit her. Why are you so hesitant?”
“Hospitals scare me. I don’t like the environment,” she lied.
“It’s okay. I’ll be right by your side.” Ah Lik held Lilly’s hands and they walked to ICU.
They opened the door to her room. “Ah Sze, look who I brought. It’s Lilly. We came to visit you. Lilly go say a few words.”
“What?”
“Go on.”
Lilly walked up slowly to Ah Sze’s bed. Her hand trembled. She couldn’t bear to look at her. It was her fault that she’s like this. “Ah Sze, it’s me Lilly. I know you probably don’t like me, but I hope that you’ll wake up soon.” I’m so sorry, it was an accident. I hope you forgive me, Lilly said in her head.
At that time, Alan came in. “Hey Alan.”
“Ah Lik?”
“Yeah, Lilly and I came to visit Ah Sze and the baby.”
Alan saw Lilly by his wife’s side and he lunged at her. “What are you doing here you B*itch? Haven’t you seen her suffer enough? You’re not welcomed her. I demand that you leave now!” Alan pushed her.
“Alan! What the hell are you doing?” He held onto Lilly. “Have you gone mad? We were just visiting Ah Sze. If you don’t want us here then fine, at least be nice about it. She did nothing wrong.”
“She did nothing wrong? Very funny. That B*itch of yours is the reason why Ah Sze is laying there!”
“What? Why are you accusing her?”
“I am not accusing her. Everything I’m saying is true. Ask her yourself!”
“Did you?” He turned to Lilly.
She shook her had and cried. “No, I didn’t do it. I didn’t. He’s lying.”
“I’m lying? You are the F*ing liar. Ah Lik all this time you’ve been played. She’s been stringing you all along. I bet she doesn’t even have a tiny ounce of compassion for you or anyone. She has a heart of coal.”
“Enough! I don’t want to hear it. Alan, I know you never supported the idea of me dating Lilly, but that does not give you a reason to accuse her like that. Come on Lilly, let’s go. Alan’s out of his mind right now.”
“If you walk out that door and defend that B*itch, our friendship is over!” Ah Lik turned around and gave Alan a hard stare. They both glared at each other.
“Fine.” He left with Lilly.
Alan slammed his fist into the wall.
