“Hey uncle, you’re back so soon,” she turned when she heard the door open.
“Lilly, I have an important task for you.” She looked puzzled.
--------------------
“Where would you like to go for lunch today sir,” asked his chauffeur as they drove out of the parking lot.
“What do you suggest,” replied Ah Lik.
“I know a great Japanese restaurant.”
“No Japanese please. I’ve had enough from my aunt.”
“What do you feel like eating,” he glanced back.
“How about some old traditional Chinese food?”
“Yes sir.” The chauffeur turned around and saw a girl bolt out into the streets. He shut his eyes and pressed on the brakes hard and the tires made a loud screeching sound. Ah Lik propelled forward in his seat.
“What happened?” He sat up.
“There was a girl right in front of the vehicle,” he answered panicking.
“What? Did you hit her?” He unbuckled his seatbelt and raced to the front of the car. There was a young woman on the floor unconscious. He tried waking her. “Miss…miss, are you alright?” He gently shook her. The driver came out of the car.
“How is she?” He wiped the sweat from his eyebrow.
“Not good. She’s not responding. Call the ambulance.” He nodded.
Ah Lik and his chauffeur waited in the emergency room.
“What am I going to do sir? What if she dies?” The chauffeur stood up and began pacing around.
Ah Lik also stood up. “Don’t worry about it yet. Let’s see what the doctor says.” He patted him on the shoulders.
When a nurse finally drew away the curtain, Ah Lik and his chauffeur went up to her.
“How’s the girl,” asked Ah Lik.
“The doctor will explain to you shortly.” She brushed passed them.
The doctor finally emerged. “Are you two the ones that brought her in?”
“Yes, how is she doctor?”
“She’s fine, just a little bruised from the fall. Nothing else physically.”
“But she’s unconscious,” said Ah Lik.
“She just fainted that’s all. I think from shock. If you like, we can keep her here for observation.”
“May we see her.”
“Yes, of course.”
“Thank you.” The doctor nodded and was on his way. Ah Lik approached her, “Miss…miss…” Her eyes slowly opened.
“Where am I?” She looked dazed.
“You’re at the hospital.”
Her memories slowly returned to her. “That’s right, your car hit me.”
“We’re awfully sorry about it,” Ah Lik apologized.
“It was my fault,” added the chauffeur.
“It’s alright. I should have looked both ways when I crossed the street.” She cracked a smile.
“Are you sure? Is there anything I can do?”
“Well, there is one thing. Dinner would be nice.” She smirked.
Ah Lik didn’t know what to say. He looked at his chauffeur who gave him a nod. “Ok…I guess, but not tonight. I have things to do.”
“No worries,” She took out her cell phone. “Here, dial your number.”
“What?”
“Dial your number so I can save it. That way I can contact you to arrange a time.” He took the phone from her and dialed his number.
“Thank you.” She took her phone back when he was done and saved the entry. She got out of the gurney.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“Home, what does it look like?”
“But you should stay overnight for observations.”
“It’s no biggie. I’m fine. I got better things to do. Chao.” She waved and walked off.
“She’s something isn’t she,” replied the chauffeur.
“I’ll say.” He shook his head.
------------------------------
Lilly got a call from her uncle. “Hello?”
“How did it go?”
“Relax, everything went the way we planned.”
“Perfect.”
------------------------------
Over the next few days, Ah Lik continued working on his company project. He was in the very last stages. There was just one more paper to look through and sign. He quickly flipped through to that page and signed it. Done. He was finally done. It felt so good to get things accomplished. How was he going to celebrate? One thing he always did was go out to dinner with his good friends, Alan and Ah Sze, but too bad they are still on their honeymoon. He sighed and rested the back of his head on his chair. His phone rang. He looked at the caller id, but didn’t recognize the number. “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me. The car accident girl,” she said cheerfully.
“Oh, hi. So…how are you?”
“I’m doing okay...would be even better if you agreed to come to dinner with me.”
He looked at his watch. “When do you suggest?”
“How does tonight sound?”
“Okay, since I’m finally free.”
“Great. I’ll meet you at Serenity Restaurant at seven.”
“See you then.” They hung up.
Ah Lik was already there at six fifty-five. He had nothing else better to do. Five minutes later, Lilly arrived.
“I’m not late. You were just early.” She pointed to her watch.
“You’re right.” He got up and pulled out a chair for her.
“Thank you.” She sat down. The waiter arrived and took their orders.
“So…what’s been holding you up?”
“Work.” He sipped his water.
“A man and his work. That’s obvious.” He drank more water. They were silent for a minute. “Have a girlfriend?”
Ah Lik almost choked on his water. “Excuse me?”
“I asked if you have a girlfriend?”
He wiped his mouth. “No, I don’t.”
“What a shame. You really should get yourself a girl to help lighten you up a bit.”
“Well, thanks for the advice.”
“No problem. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to call me up.”
“I don’t have your number.”
“Yes you do. Check your call logs.”
“Right.” Wow, I must have sounded really stupid, he thought.
“We haven’t officially introduced ourselves. I’m Lilly, Ho Ying Suet by the way,” she added casually.
“I’m Kuen Lik.”
“Is there an English name that goes with that?”
“Nick.”
There food arrived and for the rest of the night, Lilly did most of the talking and questioning.
After dinner, Ah Lik offered to take Lilly home, but she kindly refused.
“Are you sure? It’s not safe for a young attractive girl like you to roam the streets alone at night.”
“Trust me. I’ve done this before.” She tucked a strand of her behind her ear. “See you soon.” She turned and walked away.
Ah Lik shrugged his shoulders and began to walk to his car.
“Nick!” He turned and saw Lilly run up to him. She kissed him on his right cheek. His face turned bright red and his heart pounded rapidly in his chest. “Good night.” She smiled and left. Nick put his hand on his cheek and couldn’t believe what just happened. She was unlike any girl he’s ever met before, but the change was refreshing.
