Chapter 30

Revelations

Ah Lik drove Lilly to the pier. He got out of the car and stared out into the horizon. Lilly came out of the car too and walked up to him. “Are you okay? You haven’t said anything since we left the hospital.” He made no response. “Ah Lik, talk to me.” She grabbed his arms.

“Lilly, tell me honestly and I mean it when I say honestly.” He fixed his gaze on her. “Were you driving that car that day?”

“I already told you, no. Alan is making it up so he can break us apart. He’s blaming me because he can’t find the real driver and he just wants someone to blame it on.”

“Alan isn’t the type of person that would do that. He is a very rational type of person. It seems so unlikely that he would be making it up.”

“Alan has been through a lot these few weeks. Even the most rational person would go crazy under so much pressure.”

He sighed. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I really hope this blows over, because I really do not want to lose him as a friend.”

----------------------------

Lilly’s uncle KC was in Singapore for a company meeting. He spoke to Lilly through a webcam. “Uncle, I think Ah Lik is beginning to suspect me.”

“Did you leak any information?”

“No, but Alan accused me right in front of him.”

“Don’t worry. They don’t have any evidence.”

“Good thing I was at church that day for my confession. If not, I would be on trial right now.”

KC chuckled, “It does pay to be a devout Catholic.”

“Are you sure he won’t talk?”

“Don’t worry, he knows the consequences if he does.”

----------------------------------

“Ah Lik,” Man Gwan called.

“Are you going to tell me that Lilly was the driver too? Because if you are save it.”

“Just listen for once. Lilly is not a good person.”

“And how do you know that?”

“It’s this vibe I get from her.”

“Vibe? You are judging a person based solely on your instincts?”

“I know it sounds silly, but I just feel she can’t be trusted.”

“What do you guys have against her anyways?”

“We don’t want you to get hurt.”

“Well, thanks for being concerned for me, but I’m not going to get hurt.” He walked away from her.

Man Gwan shook her head, Ah Lik was impossible to get through to. She hoped that he would see the light before it's too late, but it may already be too late.

--------------------------

Alan went drinking at a bar. He was at a low point in his life. Nothing seemed to be going well. Why can’t things be they way they were? Happiness should never be overlooked. To be happy is the most valuable reward of life. Every smile and every laughter must be cherished because if you don’t, one day it may cease to exist and you would be left with nothing, but emptiness.

After drinking a few shots, he left the bar and was puking in the streets. A stranger came to his aid. “Sir, are you okay?”

“I’m fine, thank you.” He looked up and it was the witness. “You?”

The witness recognized him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Wrong person.” He started to make a run for it, but Alan stopped him. “Please let me go.”

“No, you are the witness. Why didn’t you show up that day?”

“I…can we talk somewhere more private?” Alan gave in to his wishes. They went to a secluded area.

“Now can you tell what’s going on?”

“I’m sorry that I stood you up, but I had no other choice. If I went to the police station they would harm my family.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know, but they apparently didn’t want me to testify. I’m very sorry. I know that I said that I would testify, but I wasn’t willing to take the risk. You of all people should know how important your loved ones are to you. I didn’t want them to get hurt.”

“I understand, and I don’t blame you for not showing up. I would have done the same. You’ve been a great help already.”

“Thank you for your understanding. I wish you and your wife the best and hopefully there will be other ways to convict her.”

-----------------------------

Ah Lik went over to Lilly’s house to plant a surprise. He wanted to propose to her. He decided to hide the engagement ring somewhere. He went over to her desk to look for the perfect hiding spot. He accidentally dropped the engagement ring box and it hit the keyboard. The screensaver went away, and there was an e-mail message opened. Ah Lik read it. He couldn’t believe his eyes. It was an e-mail from KC. It read:

“My dear niece, I know you’re upset over losing your car, but don’t worry, you can always ask Ah Lik for another one. If he asks what happened to your old car, just tell him that you donated it to charity or make up another devious lie. I know that you’re good with that. Ah Lik always believes everything you say anyways.

I know you’re still concerned about him finding out about the accident, not to worry. He would have never guessed that his oh so sweet girlfriend is one scheming and evil woman. One more thing, I’ve gotten your car moved to another area. I’m afraid the cops would find it. See what a great uncle I am? Don’t forget about me when you and Ah Lik get married. Money will always make me happy.

With Love, your uncle.”

A Lik’s jaw tightened after he finished reading the message. He clenched his fist. Man Gwan and Alan were right all along. How could he have been so stupid? His heart and mind were sending him mixed messages. He still loves Lilly, but he knows that it will never work out between them because she was only using him and especially because of what she did.

------------------------

“I know that I’m probably one of the last few people you want to see or talk to right now, but this is important,” said Ah Lik.

“Make it quick, I don’t have all day,” said Alan shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Here,” he gave him a piece of paper.

“What is this?” He took it from him. It was KC’s message to Lilly.

“I found this on Lilly’s computer. You were right. I’m sorry that I even doubted you. That’s a piece of evidence you can use to turn her in.”

“Why don’t you turn her in?”

“I can’t.”

“You still love her don’t you?” Alan could detect the sadness in his eyes.

“I know she doesn’t deserve to be loved, but I can’t help myself. You have the evidence in your hands. Do what you want. Whatever you choose to do now is up to you. I want no part in it.”

“I’m sorry. I wish there was another way.”

“Don’t be. You’re doing what you have to do. What you know is the right thing to do. You’re doing it for the woman you love. Don’t you worry about me. Maybe I’m meant to be alone.”

“You’re not alone. There’s actually someone I know who cares deeply for you, but you just don’t know it yet. You were too wrapped up in a fruitless relationship that you failed to see that what you wanted all along was right there in front of you.”

“What do you mean?”

“If you want to know, ask Man Gwan."

------------------------------

Alan turned in the message to the cops and they investigated the matter further. They found the car and other evidence which pointed to Lilly. She was arrested and will be facing trial.
