Chapter 31

Letting Go

Lilly was sentenced to three years in prison and a $250,000 compensation to the victim. All of Ah Sze’s family members were at her trial. Ah Lik and Man Gwan were there too. While Lilly was taken away, Ah Lik gave her a fleeting look.

They walked outside of the court. “Finally, justice is served,” said David.

“They should have imprisoned her for life,” said Lang Po.

“Lang Po, don’t be so mean. I think that was a very fair sentence,” said Jason.

Man Gwan followed Ah Lik down the stairs. Ah Lik’s face was rigid. He showed no emotion. His chauffeur opened the car door for him, but he told him he wanted to take a walk. Ah Lik walked for a mile with Man Gwan following behind. Every time he turned around she hid from his view.

He stopped and said, “I know you’re there.” Man Gwan came out from hiding. “Why are you following me?”

“I wanted to make sure you were alright.”

“You think I’m going to commit suicide or something? Don’t worry. I’m fine.”

“Let it out. I know you’re holding it all in. Remember the technique I taught you?”

He smiled, “Yeah, I remember.”

“You don’t have to scream or yell here if you don’t want to, but at least tell me your frustrations.”

“My frustrations? I think it’s more than just frustrations. Why is it so hard to find someone to love and to be loved in return? That’s all I want. It's simple enough. You guys think I’m always the funny and cheerful Ah Lik with so much money that I don’t know what to spend it on. If giving up all my money could bring me happiness I would. Whoever said money makes you happy is wrong. Is there something horribly wrong with me, something that bad that no girl would love me for me? I’m like a girl repellant or something. I’m really not a bad guy. I try so hard to make those around me happy, but no one is ever there to make me happy. I don’t know who to trust anymore. I’m really tired. Sometimes I think, maybe I should just be gay. That way I would no longer have to face girl troubles again.” He rubbed his head.

“There are people who care for you. I know Alan and Ah Sze do. I do. You know you can always count on me. I’ll always be there for you.”

“But it’s not the same. I want someone who I can spend the rest of my life with. You three are only friends. You will have your own family and pretty soon you would forget about me. Friends can only do so much.”

“You’re more than just a friend to me. For the longest time I,” she took a deep breath, “I like you Ah Lik. I really do.”

Ah Lik was stunned. “You…you like me?”

She nodded. “I’ve wanted to tell you for the longest time, but I was scared. Then I found out that you were already dating someone. Ah Sze even encouraged me to tell you, but there was never the perfect opportunity. I want to let you know now, because I’m afraid that if I don’t, I’ll never get the chance.”

“Why won’t you…”

“I’m returning to Shanghai.”

“You are?”

“I’ve been offered a great job there. It would be a perfect opportunity for me. I don’t want you to feel obligated to like me or do anything for me. I just wanted to let you know. I know you can’t always be with the person you like.” There was an awkward silence.

“When are you leaving?”

“My flight leaves tonight.”

“So soon?”

“I was going to leave earlier, but I wanted to see how the trial turned out.”

“I’m sure you’ll do well there. If you ever need anything, give me a call. I know some business partners that have headquarters in Shanghai.”

“Thanks,” she said disappointed.

“I need to get back to my office.”

“Okay.” They turned in opposite directions.

“Man Gwan,”

She immediately turned around to face him. “Yeah?”

“Good luck.”

“Oh, thanks.”

------------------------

Ah Lik sat in his room staring at the ceiling. Did he make the right decision? He reminisced the times they spent together. He smiled just thinking of it. Man Gwan is a great girl, but the feelings weren’t the same. He was happy that there was someone that genuinely likes him, but he was afraid he couldn’t reciprocate those feelings and it would be unfair to the girl. He knew in his heart there was still Lilly. He had to get over Lilly before he could move on.

----------------------

Man Gwan looked around the airport in hopes of seeing Ah Lik. He wasn't there. Who was she trying to kid? Why would he even come? She must have scared him off earlier. She entered the departure gate, but heard a voice call her name. She turned around thinking that it was Ah Lik, but it was only Alan.

“Alan?”

He ran to her out of breath, “Sorry, I’m late. I had to wait till Hailey fell asleep.”

“You didn’t have to come.”

“You’re leaving, how could I not come? I guess this means goodbye then.” He hugged her.

“Yeah, but you can always come up to visit me. Take Ah Sze and Hailey. It could be a family vacation.” They pulled apart.

“Yeah, if there ever is that opportunity,” he sighed and looked down.

“There will be I know it. I have a feeling she’ll wake up soon. Looking forward to see you guys.”

“Last call for gate 423,” said a flight attendant.

“Oh, you better go.”

“Yeah, goodbye. Thanks for everything.”

“Goodbye and good luck.” He watched as she entered the gate.
