“What’s happening to her Dr? She looks so uncomfortable,” said Alan.
“This is what we were afraid of. She has an infection. We will give her some antibiotics and a fever reducer to see if it helps.”
“So we’re just going to sit here and watch her suffer?”
“You have to be patient, not every antibiotic will be effective. We’re doing the best we can.” The doctor left the room.
Alan sat by Ah Sze’s bedside and wiped away her sweat. “You’ve got to hang in there. You’ve held on for so long, why are you giving up now? We never gave up on you. Please stay with us.”
“We should let her rest,” said David. Alan got up and before he left the room gave her one last look. “Come on.” He put his hands on Alan’s shoulder and they walked out together.
“Do you think she’s going to make it?”
David replied, “Of course, why would you say that? You’ve always believed in her.”
“But she’s getting weaker. It seems like she’s giving up. She was in my dream last night. She told me that she was leaving. She made me promise that I will continue to live my life and raise Hailey. I think that dream was a premonition.”
“Since when did you get so superstitious? You never believed in those things.”
“That wasn’t the only time I dreamt of her. The first time was when she came to talk to me about neglecting Hailey. After that dream I changed my ways. I feel that in each of these dreams she’s trying to tell me something. The only time I dream of her is when she has something important to say. What if she…”
“Alan it’s just a dream. Of course you would dream of her. Your mind is constantly occupied with thoughts and memories of her; it’s not surprising to see her in your dreams.”
“But they’re so real. I could even feel her. It has to be more than a dream.”
“Do not lose faith my son. Maybe she’s testing you to see if you would give up on her. You must show her that you still believe in her. Together we can help her fight this.”
------------------------
The next day, the doctor went back in to check on her. He shook his head. “What doctor?” Alan saw it as a bad sign.
“I’m sorry. Her condition hasn’t really changed.”
Alan shook the doctor, “You’ve got to do something, anything.”
“Calm down, we’ll try another antibiotic.”
“You’re just going to keep giving her meds? Couldn’t you do surgery or something?”
He shook his head, “Surgery can’t fix every ailment. I’ll check back on her a little later.” He exited the room.
“Ah Sze, you can’t give up. You’re still needed. Even though Hailey is safely brought into this world, she still needs a mother’s care, a mother’s love. No one can provide that, but you. You haven’t kept your promise yet, not entirely. She was crying all last night. I know she misses you. She wants you to be there for her. You can’t let her down. You can let me down, but you can’t let Hailey down. Please, hang in there. If you can’t do it for me at least do it for Hailey."
A few nurses came in, “We’re going to have to give her some medication. Please step outside for a moment.” Alan left the room and they pulled the curtains over. Alan rubbed his eyes.
--------------------------
Alan called home to check on Hailey. “Lang Po, how is Hei Man doing?”
“She miraculously stopped crying. I went to get her, her bottle and when I came back she suddenly stopped crying.”
“Really? That’s great.”
“How is Ah Sze?”
“The same,” he sighed, “but don’t worry. The doctors are doing everything they can.”
“Well, I’m going to go feed Hei Man now, if anything comes up call me.”
“Okay, bye.” They hung up.
------------------------------
Alan was in the cafeteria eating a sandwich and David came running to him. He was panting. “Whoa, slow down and catch your breath. Is there something you want to tell me?”
Still breathing heavily he said, “It’s Ah Sze…”
“Ah Sze, what happened?” He shot out of his chair.
“The medicine is working. Her fever is gone. The infection is clearing up.”
“Really?” Alan smiled.
“See, I told you she’s a fighter. She won’t give up that easily.”
“Hailey stopped crying too. She must know that her mom is okay.” Alan hugged David as they jumped for joy.
