Chapter 34

Hailey's First Words

Ten months later…

“Come here, you don’t want to be late for your birthday party now, do you?” Hailey shook her head, but when Alan tried to get her, she ran away from him. “Hey, you cheated.” Hailey giggled. Alan chased Hailey and finally caught her, “gotcha! Come on sweetie, no more fooling around. You’ve got to get dressed. Alan put her on his bed and she stood perfectly still letting her dad dress her. “Now that’s my good girl.” After he dressed her they went down to his car and drove to the party. The party took place at the beach.

“There’s the star of the day,” exclaimed David.

“Sorry, we’re late; she wouldn’t let me dress her.”

“How could the birthday girl be late?” David pinched her cheeks.

“Hailey, come to Aunt CoCo.” She opened her arms and Hailey ran to her. “Say Aunt CoCo. Co…Co…Co…Co.”

“Save it, you know she can’t talk yet.”

“You never know, today is her special day, maybe she’ll decide to say something today.”

“Hei Man, give great grandma a kiss,” she bent down. Hailey kissed her. “Aww…”

They ate and played for a couple hours. “Birthday cake is here,” said Jason. Martin returned from picking up the cake.

“Alright, everyone gather around. We’re going to sing Happy Birthday to Hailey. Hailey stand in the middle, that’s right.” They lit a candle. “Everybody ready? 1…2…3…Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Hailey, Happy Birthday to you. Yay!” They clapped and cheered. “Blow out the candles now, Hailey.” She looked at her dad puzzled. “Blow it out like this, he demonstrated. Now your turn, but face the candle.” She blew out the single candle and they clapped.

“What did you wish for?”

“What are you talking about, she doesn’t know how to wish,” said Jason.

“Hey I can play around can’t I,” said CoCo.

----------------------

Alan took Hailey to the hospital for a check up.

“Today is your birthday isn’t it Hailey? Happy Birthday.” She gave her a sticker. He turned to Alan. “She’s looking good. She’s making excellent progress. Who could have guessed that she was a preemie,” Dr. Chan chuckled. “And how are things going Mr. Sum?”

“Oh you know, the usual.”

“Good, well, that’s it. You’re done. Come back for a check up in another six months.”

“Thanks Dr.”

“No problem.”

------------------------

Their next stop was to see Ah Sze. “Honey, look who I brought? I bet you can’t even recognize her, she’s grown so much.” He held on to Hailey. “Hailey, say hi to mommy.” He took her hands and made waving motions. Hailey complained and wanted to be put down. “Fine, you want to come down?” He set her down. She pointed to the bed. “What? You want to climb on the bed? She nodded. “Okay, but be careful, don’t disturb mommy.” He picked her up and put her by Ah Sze’s bedside. Alan’s phone rang. “Stay here and don’t move okay? Daddy will be right back.” He stepped out of the room to answer the phone.

Meanwhile, Hailey grabbed onto her mom’s hand and let it go. She did it several times and giggled because it would fall every time she let go. Ah Sze’s eyes darted around and her fingers twitched. Her eyes fluttered opened.

“Yeah, great, I’ll call you back.” Alan hung up and went back into the room. “What were you giggling about?”

“Mama…” said Hailey.

Alan couldn’t believe his ears, “What did you just say?”

“Mama…”

“You said Mama! Good job can you say Dada? Da…Da…come on.”

“Mama,” she repeated and pointed to Ah Sze. Alan looked and saw that Ah Sze had awakened.

“Ah Sze! Ah Sze! You’re awake?” This was too good to be true. He went and got a doctor.

The doctor checked on her. He flashed a light into both of her eyes and confirmed that she has indeed awakened.

“Oh my God, I can’t believe this. Ah Sze, it’s me, do you remember? It’s me Alan.”

Ah Sze’s vision was a blur. It slowly came into focus. “She’s probably not going to give you much of a response. She’s been in a coma for a long time. You’re going to have to be patient,” said the Doctor.

“Oh, I can be patient, I’ve waited a whole year, a little longer wouldn’t hurt.”

When everyone heard of the good news they all went ballistic. Everyone from the mall congratulated Alan.

Ah Sze didn’t say a word though. Her family showed her photos and home videos to try to familiarize her with them, but she didn’t have much response.

--------------------------

Alan pushed Ah Sze out on a wheelchair for some fresh air. He sat down on a bench. “Ah Sze, this is our daughter, Hailey, Sum Hei Man.” He showed her a picture. “Isn’t she just adorable? She’s got your good looks,” he smiled. “You know what her first word was? It was mama. I kept trying to teach her to speak, but she wouldn’t say anything and when I took her to you, she immediately said mama. Isn’t that a miracle? You know the doctors said the chances of you waking up were getting slimmer and slimmer? Well, you proved them wrong. You’ve proved that miracles do happen. Oh how happy I am to see you finally awake. You better give me an ‘A’ for patience,” he chuckled. “Oh I almost forgot,” he dug into his pocket and took out a platinum band diamond ring. “This is your wedding ring remember? Here let me put it on.” He took her left hand and slid the ring onto her ring finger. “There, good as new.” Ah Sze looked at the ring on her finger and tears flooded her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

She cried, “You all did so much for me.”

“You can speak? All this time, I thought you forgot how. I thought you forgot about all of us,” he said delighted.

“I didn’t lose my memories. I remember everything all too well. I’ve just been in shock that’s all. I didn’t think I would see you all again.” She put her hands on his cheeks, “you’ve lost so much weight.”

“It was all because of you. You had me worried sick, but now I’m sure I can pack in a few pounds since you’re back,” he smiled.

“Always the jokester,” she smiled. “You know, you didn’t have to wait for me. You could have gotten yourself another woman to take care of you and Hailey. What if I didn’t make it?”

“Ssshhh,” he put his finger on her lip to silence her. “I never want to hear you say that. I told you, you’re the only one for me. I’m willing to wait for as long as it takes. Even if it’s forever, I’ll still wait for you.” He kissed her forehead.

“I love you.”

“And I you.”
