Chapter 4

The Visitor

Coco tossed and turned in her bed. Sweat poured down her face. The pain was unbearable. She sat up and held her stomach. She shook Jason up. “Jason…Jason.”

He groaned not wanting to get up, “What is it?”

“I think it’s time.”

Jason shot out of bed. “What? Now? But you’re only seven months pregnant.”

“I know, but I’m feeling the contractions.”

“Okay, I’ll take you to the hospital.” He immediately got up and put on his jacket and grabbed his keys. He helped Coco get into the car and drove off as fast as he could.

Coco’s entire family came with the exception of Ah Sze who was in Paris. David, Coco’s dad was frantic while asking Jason how his daughter was.

“The doctor said she’s in labor.”

“But she’s only seven months pregnant,” added Lang Por, Coco’s grandmother.

“That’s what I’m worried about,” answered Jason.

“It’s okay. People have had babies that are not full term before. It’s no big deal,” said Chris, Coco’s eldest sister.

“Chris is right, don’t worry Lang Por,” added Martin, Chris’ husband.

-----------------------
In Hong Kong it was around four in the morning, but in Paris, it was ten at night. Alan and Ah Sze were strolling in the streets.

“It’s a lovely night,” said Alan.

“Clear skies too. We can see the stars tonight.”

Alan stopped and took her hand into his and held it with both of his hands. “Are you having a good time this past week?”

“What do you think?” She beamed. They gazed at each other for a few moments and leaned in for a light kiss that was interrupted by Ah Sze’s cell phone ringing. They broke apart and Ah Sze dug into her purse to retrieve her phone. “Hello? Chris? Shouldn’t you be in bed?

“Not when Coco’s having a baby.”

“What? She is? But that’s so soon.”

“I know, but there’s nothing to worry about. I just wanted to inform you.”

“Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. She’s still in labor. The doctors will take care of her. Enjoy the rest of your honeymoon.” She hung up.

“Wait…” But it was too late.

Alan saw a concerned look on her face. “Is everything alright?”

“Coco’s having a baby.”

“Really? Is she and the baby okay?”

“She’s in labor. I’m worried. I think we should go back.”

“Honey, I’m sure she’s fine.”

“She’s my sister. I want to be there for her.”

He sighed, “I understand. I’ll get tickets and we’ll fly back as soon as possible.”

“Thank you.” She gave Alan a hug.

---------------------------------
It was four in the afternoon in Hong Kong. The doorbell rang at Alan’s parent’s apartment.

Betty opened the door and a girl lunged at her. “Surprise!” She pulled away.

“Man Gwan?” Betty couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Aren’t you happy to see me, Aunt Betty?”

“Yes…of course I am,” she lied. “What brought you down here?”

“I got bored in Shanghai, so I thought I would spend some time in Hong Kong.”

Wonderful, Betty thought and rolled her eyes hoping Man Gwan didn’t see it.

“Well, aren’t you going to invite me in?”

“Oh yes, come in, come in.” She moved aside so she can enter. Man Gwan pulled in her suitcase.

“Why are you still living here? I thought Cousin Alan is a CEO now. Shouldn’t you be living in a mansion by now?”

“Well, Alan did purchase a nice apartment so that the four of us could live together, but your uncle didn’t want to move because he didn’t want to get in the way of Alan and his wife besides he said that the post office is closer here so it’s easier for him to go to work. So I had no choice, but to stay.”

“I see.” She looked around the apartment, but wasn’t too pleased.

“When are you going back?”

“Haven’t decided yet, but in the meantime, I’m going to need a place to stay.”

Betty knew that this was coming, but what can she do? Man Gwan is her niece after all. Betty and her sister didn’t get along very well. Man Gwan and her mother were very frugal people that were immensely selfish and greedy, even more so than her. “Space is really tight here and this is not so great of a place. My favorite niece deserves better.” She paused, “I know just the place you can stay. I know you’ll love it.” Man Gwan’s face lit up.

-----------------------
Betty took out the keys and unlocked the door to her son’s apartment. “Come on in.”

“Are you sure, Alan wouldn’t mind?” She entered the apartment with Betty following her.

“Nonsense, my son is known for his great hospitality.”

“It’s a nice place. A lot better than your place that’s for sure.” She sat on the leather couch. “Where’s Alan?”

“He’s on his honeymoon. He should be back in a week.”

“Oh yeah, that’s right. He recently got married.”

“Well, I need to go to the market. Make yourself at home.”

“I will. Bye Aunt Betty.” She turned on the plasma TV.

Betty quickly left the apartment. She breathed a sigh of relief. “Sorry son, but I’m sure you can handle it.”

After flipping through the channels, Man Gwan felt her stomach grumble. She left the TV on and went to the kitchen to look for something to eat. The kitchen was spacious. The tabletop was made of black marble and most of the major appliances were stainless steel. She opened up the refrigerator, but found it to have a box of eggs, a few cans of soda, and some beer. Unbelievable, she thought. She went through each of the cabinets, but there was no food in sight. What kind of place is this? There’s a nice kitchen, but no food. She gave up on her food search and decided to check out the rest of the apartment. She went to the bathroom and nodded approvingly. Her next stop was the bedroom. She opened up the door and her eyes grew to the size of golf balls. “Awesome!” The room was twice the size of hers back in Shanghai. She went to the vanity table and saw photos of Alan and a girl she’s never seen before. “That must be Alan’s wife. She’s not too bad looking, but I still look better.” She yawned. The bed suddenly looked very comfortable. “Nice sheets. Now let’s see if they are as comfortable as they look.” She leaped onto bed. She sighed, “It’s soft, it’s spacious, it’s perfect!” The bed was so comfortable that she unwittingly fell asleep.
