“Did you not eat today? Because it seems like you haven’t eaten in three days,” remarked Alan.
“Well, if you had food in your house, I wouldn’t be starving now would I?”
“Tell me, how long do you plan on staying?”
“Don’t know. It could be a few days to permanently.” She grinned.
“Does your mom know you’re here?”
“She doesn’t care.” Man Gwan had just finished a plate of fish balls. “Waiter, can we get another plate of fish balls?” The waiter nodded. “You two better eat before I finish all the food.”
“Here, have some shrimp,” said Alan as he grabbed a shrimp with his chopsticks and put it into Ah Sze’s bowl.
When they were all done eating, Alan paid the bill. “So where to next,” said Man Gwan as they were standing outside.
“We’re heading home.”
“What?! So soon? You guys are no fun. It’s still early,” complained Man Gwan.
“Yes, we are very boring people, if you don’t like it then you can go somewhere else, we’re not making you stay,” said Alan.
“Alan…don’t be so mean,” said Ah Sze.
“Well if she wants to do something else, then who are we to stop her?”
“Fine! I’ll find my own entertainment.” Man Gwan stormed off.
“Man Gwan,” Ah Sze called after her. “Now look what you’ve done…Man Gwan wait!” Ah Sze ran up to her.
“I’ll be fine. Go back to Alan before he gets mad at me for making you come along.”
“Alan didn’t mean what he said.”
“You don’t need to defend him. He’s never really liked me. No one really ever liked me. I’m used to it. I should have known it was a bad choice to come down here anyways. People everywhere treat me the same way.”
“Don’t say that. I’m sure you’re just drawing your own conclusions. He’s not in a good mood because his vacation was ended early. My sister had her baby so we came back to Hong Kong a week early.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, now come home. It’s not good for a girl to be out by herself at night.” Man Gwan gave in and they went back to Alan’s car.
Back at the apartment Ah Sze was helping Man Gwan set up the guestroom. “Do you have any luggage?”
“Only that bag,” she pointed.
“You really travel light don’t you?”
“At a new destination, I like to get new things, so I never bring much with me.”
“It’s getting late. You should change into your pajamas and go to bed.”
“I don’t have pajamas. The only clothes I have are the ones I’m wearing right now. I left everything in Shanghai.”
“Oh, well you’re welcome to borrow mine for the time being and tomorrow we can go get you some new clothes.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” She smiled and went into her room. She looked through her closet to find pajamas for Man Gwan.
“What are you looking for,” asked Alan.
“Man Gwan doesn’t have pjs so I’m letting her borrow mine.”
Alan scoffed, “She hasn’t changed. All she does is leech off of people.”
“Can you keep it down? She’s in the room across from us. I don’t understand why you have to be so mean to her.” She found a new set of red flannel pjs.
She knocked on Man Gwan’s room. “Come in.”
“I found a new set of pjs that I haven’t worn yet. See if it fits.”
“Thanks. It will do.”
“Well, good night.”
“Night.” Ah Sze shut the door and returned to her room.
Man Gwan opened up the one piece of luggage she had and took out a black and white photo of a man. She kissed it and placed it inside her pillowcase.
“Now tell me, why do you despise her so much? I want to know the whole story.” Ah Sze said as she sat on the bed. Alan put away the book he was reading.
“Man Gwan is the daughter of my mom’s sister. Once in a while, Man Gwan and my aunt would come down to Hong Kong to visit us because we are the only relatives they have left. I remember one time my mom won second prize in the lottery, but she lost the ticket. My mom had suspicions that my aunt took it, but she kept denying it. They got into this huge argument to the point where they wanted to sever their family ties. My aunt returned to Shanghai with Man Gwan. It wasn’t until five years ago, that I guess my aunt and mom made up. I still could sense a grudge between them. My aunt no longer came to visit us, but Man Gwan still did. Each time she stayed with us she would wreak havoc. Things went missing and she found every opportunity to take advantage of us. Our generosity could only go so far. Basically she became a pest. We got tired of her using us all the time to get benefits so when we moved we didn’t give them our new address. Last year she found out our address, but because her mom didn’t let her come down, we were safe from her until now…”
“Wow, I didn’t know there was such a history.”
“Now you know why?”
“She may have been a pest in the past, but people could change you know.”
“It would take a miracle for her to come to her senses. I’m tired. Let’s go to bed.” He slid under the covers.
Ah Sze couldn’t believe all that happened. “Good night.” She turned off the lights and went to bed.
In the middle of the night, Ah Sze got up to use the bathroom. Man Gwan walked out of her room with her eyes still closed and went inside Alan and Ah Sze’s bedroom. She walked up to the bed and tucked herself in. Alan wrapped his hands around Man Gwan thinking it was his wife. Ah Sze returned to the room and found Alan’s arm around Man Gwan. She yelled, “Alan!”
Alan woke up and saw what he was doing. “What the…” He quickly let her go and got out of bed. “I had no idea she was in our bed. I thought that was you.”
“I was using the bathroom and when I came back she was already there.”
“She must’ve been sleep walking again.”
“She sleep walks?”
“Yeah, that was one minor detail I left out. What should we do? Should we wake her?”
“No, let her sleep. You can go sleep in her room and I’ll sleep here.”
“Okay.” He left the room and Ah Sze climbed into bed. It's been a long day for everyone.
