“Did you have dinner yet,” asked Mr. Yim.
He nodded happily. “I’m going to shower.” He went up the stairs to his room.
“Well, he seems rather happy. What’s gotten into him,” questioned Mrs. Yim looking up from her magazine.
“I think KC’s plan is working.”
Mrs. Yim's ears perked up with interest. “What plan?” She placed her magazine on the coffee table and listened intently.
“I’m not exactly sure, but whatever it is…it sure is making him happier.”
“I think he’s seeing someone.”
“How do you know?”
“A woman’s intuition.”
Ah Lik came out of the bathroom drying his hair with a towel. There was a knock on the door. “Come in.” Mr. Yim came in. “Hey dad, what’s up?”
“Nothing, I just want to have a chat.” He took a seat on Ah Lik’s bed. Ah Lik hung his towel on the rack. “Do you have anything you want to share?”
“No. Why?”
“Just want to see how you’re doing.”
“Stop beating around the bushes dad. Just get to the point,” he said blatantly.
“Are you dating?”
“Dad…what kind of question is that?”
“I’m just curious. Being a father I want to know if you are.” Ah Lik smiled and looked down. “Are you? You’ve been different lately. Something must be going on.” Ah Lik silently nodded. “Really? Who? Do I know this lucky girl?”
“Dad too many questions. All I’m going to say is, she’s unlike any other girls I’ve met before. You’ll get to know her soon enough. Give us some time please.”
“Okay...okay, I’m not going to rush you. You tell me when you’re ready to.” He got up to leave. He turned the doorknob and walked outside, but before he left he said, “Don’t stay up too late.”
“I won’t. Good night dad.”
“Night.” He shut the door behind him.
What to do now, he thought. "I wonder what she’s doing at the moment." He looked at the clock and decided that it was early enough. She couldn’t possibly be asleep this early. He dialed her number on his cell phone and waited a couple of seconds before she picked up. “Hello?”
“Hey,” said a muffled voice on the other line.
“Am I calling at a bad time?”
“No, I just finished showering,” she sniffed.
“Oh, me too,” he chuckled. “Are you sick? You sound different.”
“It’s just a cold.”
“It’s all my fault. We should have gotten a table inside. It was cold tonight.”
“No, I should have worn more layers. I enjoyed our little moonlit dinner.”
“Did you take medicine yet?”
“I will before I go to bed since they make me drowsy…achoo!” She sniffed. “Excuse me," she blew her nose.
“You sound really miserable. I’ll let you get to bed. Go see a doctor tomorrow.”
“I will. You should sleep early too.”
“Good night.”
“Night.” The line went dead.
Ah Lik sighed and thought for a moment. He grabbed his coat and keys and left his room.
Lilly’s doorbell rang. Who could it be at this hour, she thought. She was astonished to see that it was Ah Lik.
“Surprise! I brought you some chicken soup.” He held up the thermos.
Lilly smiled, “You came all the way down here to bring me soup?” Ah Lik walked into the kitchen with Lilly following him.
“You’re my girlfriend; I have the responsibility to take care of you.” He removed the lid from the thermos and got a bowl from the dish rack. “I didn’t want you to take medication on an empty stomach.” He poured the soup into the bowl and grabbed a spoon. “Come with me,” he motioned. They went to the living room. He blew the soup to cool it down. “Here, careful it’s hot.” She drank the soup carefully. “How is it?”
“It’s good, makes me feel all warm inside.”
“I was afraid that it would taste horrible since it’s my first time making soup.”
“You made this?” She finished the bowl of soup. He nodded. “You’re so sweet. I would kiss you right now, but I don’t want to get you sick.”
“You want another bowl?” She nodded. He went to refill the bowl with more soup. She finished the second bowl faster than the first. “Did you take meds yet?”
“No.”
“Where are they?”
“In the kitchen cabinet.” Ah Lik went to look for the medicine. He read each label carefully to make sure she took the right medicine. He brought out two pill bottles and a glass of water.
“Here, take one pill of each.” He handed her the pills and the glass of water. She swallowed the pills. “This is only a temporary solution. You still have to go to the doctor tomorrow.”
“Will you be going with me?”
“If you want, then I will. Alright, time for bed.” Lilly yawned.
“What are you going to do if I don’t comply?”
“I’ll do this…” He lifted her up and carried her to her room.
“Hey, you’re cheating.” He placed her on her bed. “No fair.”
“Good night.”
“Nick, stay…please?” He paused and thought about it. “Is it too much to keep your sick girlfriend company?”
“Alright. I’ll stay until you fall asleep.” He pulled up a chair and sat beside her bed.
The medication began to take effect. She felt herself getting really drowsy. Her eyes felt heavy and she began to drift to sleep. Lilly was glad he decided to stay. Nick must be really in love with her to go to great lengths to make her feel better. All she had was a cold, but he was willing to do so much for her. If only her uncle could see this, oh how proud he would be of her. Nick watched her as she slept. She looked so at peace, so comfortable. He could make out the faint lines of her smile. He started to believe that she could be the one, the one he would spend the rest of his life with.
